Strong board work keeps the Blazers in control even when the Sixers play well as Portland sends Philly to their 14th straight loss.

The Portland Trail Blazers got the chance to face the 2020 World Champions today as they squared off against the Philadelphia 76'ers in the second game of a three-part East Coast road swing. The Blazers played around with the Sixers for a half before slamming the door on their hosts in the third period and refusing to let them gain re-entry, culminating in a 114-104 victory for Portland.

Game Flow

First Half

We don't need to split this game into quarters. The halftime intermission provided a bright line delineating the breaking point of the evening.

Before halftime the Blazers rebounded well, shot OK, and played decent halfcourt defense. Normally this would be enough to put away a team like the Sixers. But the Blazers also gave it all back (and more) by turning over the ball and allowing Philly to streak to 18 fast break points in the first 24 minutes of the game.

The Sixers are the league's lowest-scoring team, averaging 89 points per game on 41% shooting. Running the break is their only reliable source of buckets. They average 14 fast break points each night. Allowing them 18 in the first half alone was akin to getting the Gremlins wet. Bad idea.

As a result of this generous malfeasance the Sixers took a 52-50 lead into the break, leaving the Wells Fargo Center crowd ecstatic. Some arenas have a fast food giveaway if the home team reaches 100 points in a game. When the 76'ers lead at the half, every fan in attendance walks away with a brand new car.

Second Half

As it turned out, those fans should have driven away at halftime. The Blazers turned off the spigot of turnovers in the second half. With it went the break opportunities and Philadelphia's capacity to stay even.

To nobody's surprise, the Blazers opened the third period working LaMarcus Aldridge...their go-to scoring option when things aren't trending well. Aldridge responded with 15 points in the quarter, spurring his team to 39 overall. Philly scored 28 in the period themselves but you could see the wind flee their sails the second they got down by 8 or so. They had read this story before. The game was over. They knew it, their crowd knew it, and the Blazers knew it too. Portland played free and easy the rest of the way, protecting the rock and not letting the Sixers close again. Philadelphia managed to top 100 for only the 2nd time this year, but still absorbed a 114-104 loss, their 14th straight to start the season.

Analysis

There's not too much to say on Portland's end other than they sure like to fiddle around with weaker opponents. When a team has exactly one way to trap you into a loss, you'd think avoiding that trap would be a priority. Instead the Blazers stepped right in it, let it close, then hulked their way out behind Aldridge. Good enough, but it still makes you scratch your head.

As we saw tonight, the Sixers are good at forcing turnovers. The Blazers demonstrated that they're susceptible to pressure...a recurring theme throughout the season so far. Most teams can't keep it up long enough to bother Portland much, but when they do come up against quick defense at the point of attack and/or in the passing lanes, the Blazers don't look great.

On the other hand Portland's rebounding was SO dominant that you never felt like the Sixers could defend them. Even if the Blazers missed you figured they were going to get the ball right back.

This game also provided a wonderful contrast in chemistry. The Blazers weren't perfect, but they were confident and played together. The Sixers have plenty of interesting pieces. Nerlens Noel, K.J. McDaniels, Henry Sims, Tony Wroten, and Michael Carter-Williams all got chances to shine tonight. But the chemistry between Carter-Williams and his teammates was like toothpaste on an artichoke. That disconnect alone was enough to sabotage Philly's momentum...and this despite 28 assists on 42 made buckets for them. Portland's teamwork made it feel like they were never out of it. Philadelphia's made it feel like they were never in it. It'll be interesting to see if that changes as they gain experience and pack that roster even more. If they ever learn how to use the talent they're accumulating, the Sixers could be scary.

Fun With Numbers

--70 points in the paint allowed is not fun for Portland. 0 three-pointers allowed is more so.

--18 fast break points allowed in the first half is not fun either. Containing the Sixers to only 22 for the game redeems it.

--Similarly, the Blazers ended up turning over the ball only 15 times in the game, giving up 11 steals after handing over 9 in the first two quarters.

--Portland shot only 26% from the arc on 27 attempts but managed 49% shooting from the field.

--18 offensive rebounds to 7 given up. Woot!

Individual Notes

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 33 on 13-20 shooting. Even more impressive: he was captain of the rebounding squad, netting 11 for the game including 6 offensive rebounds. He was everything for the Blazers in this game.

Damian Lillard had a measured outing, scoring 16 on 6-11 shooting with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 turnovers. He stayed with Carter-Williams better than he stayed with Rajon Rondo last night.

Robin Lopez smacked away 4 blocked shots, in part because his teammates were letting drivers feed down the lane into his arms. He was really active down low on the defensive end tonight. Great outing.

Wesley Matthews ended up in the middling category again tonight, scoring 17 but shooting 6-16, 2-8 from distance, in the process. His opponents looked faster than his defense could keep up with.

Nicolas Batum bedeviled the Sixers with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. He didn't face a high-stress defensive matchup nor did the Blazers need him to score.

Joel Freeland turned in an amazing second-quarter shift, scoring 9 points in 14 total minutes mostly by finding the seams in Philly's defense. The guy sees the floor well. He added 4 rebounds and 4 fouls. He's getting called for everything he does inside these days.

Chris Kaman had a frustrating night, getting into it with officials and getting denied by Philly bigs. He still managed 8 points and 9 rebounds in 19 minutes.

Steve Blake played 23 minutes, missed all 5 of his three-pointers, all 6 of his shot attempts, but still managed to look great because of 8 assists and confidence.

Allen Crabbe also looked confident, hitting 2 of his 4 triples on the way to 8 points in 15 minutes.

Will Barton had a really nice dunk on the break, scoring 5 points with a steal and a block in 6 minutes.

The Blazers will take a travel night before facing the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday.

Another slow start could not deter LaMarcus Aldridge and the Blazers in a win against Philadelphia.

Winless Philadelphia gave Portland a scare, but LaMarcus Aldridge would not be denied.

Aldridge had 33 points and 11 rebounds, Damian Lillard had 16, and Portland overcame 17 turnovers to hold off the Philadelphia 76ers, 114-104, Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center

The first quarter woes continued for the Blazers as they missed seven of their first ten shots, committed eight turnovers, and overall looked out of sorts against the 76ers. Aldridge scored eight in the period on 4-of-9 shooting, but Portland fell victim to poor passing, poor decision making, and poor defense against Philadelphia players piercing the lane. Yet the Sixers could not take advantage, and Portland held a 24-20 lead after one.

The mistakes continued for Portland in the second quarter as they committed six more turnovers, mostly on bad passing decisions. They also finished the half shooting just 2-of-12 from three, and the 76ers were able to drive at will against Portland's interior defense. Tony Wroten and Nerlens Noel had a combined 18 points and 6 steals. The bright spot for the Blazers came in the form of Joel Freeland, who scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Despite his efforts, Philadelphia took a two point lead into the half.

Once again, the second half came to the rescue. Aldridge went off the rails in the third quarter, shooting 5-of-5 for 13 points. Lillard scored seven, Lopez scored six, and the Blazers ripped off an 11-2 run to re-take the lead. Wroten and Noel continued to be an issue on defense, but Portland's offense finally clicked, giving them a nine point lead after three.

Aldridge's hot shooting continued into the final period. At one point, Aldridge had made nine straight field goals. When it looked like Philadelphia would get back into the game, Aldridge got to the free throw line, hit one of two, then drove on Noel again for a three-point play.

Allen Crabbe and Chris Kaman had eight off the bench.

The Blazers land in Philadelphia today to take on the winless 76ers in the second half of a back-to-back set that started with a win yesterday over the Celtics.

The 0-13 Sixers are historically bad, sporting a scoring margin of -16.5 points. Their 88.8 points per game ranks dead-last in the NBA, and Philly is No. 30 in the league in the following offensive categories: effective field goal percentage, three-point percentage, overall shooting percentage and even free throw shooting percentage. They turn the ball over often and have poor ball movement.

The 76ers are decent at scoring via fastbreaks and get up plenty of threes. That's about the end of the list of things they do well consistently on offense.

Philadelphia's defense is as bad as its offense, allowing 105.2 points per game (No. 26 in the NBA), 16.3 fastbreak points (No. 29) and 24.3 assists (No. 27). They send opponents to the free throw line often and struggle to defend all areas of the court. The Sixers do force plenty of turnovers, but are pretty abysmal defensively, otherwise.

Point guard Michael Carter-Williams -- who missed the first several games of the season due to injury -- gets up the most shots for Philadelphia, but he's been unable to convert well from anywhere on the floor. Carter-Williams gets to the rim for a third of his shot attempts, but has been unable to finish. His midrange jumper is off, and he's shot four three-pointers a game over the last five but has made just 20 percent of them. He has a 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in that span, coughing up the ball 4.2 times per game.

Shooting guard Tony Wroten either drives to the rim or launches threes, eschewing the midrange entirely. In the last five games, he's made 39.4 percent of his shots and 15.8 percent of his threes. Wroten has picked up 5.2 assists a night, though, leading the Sixers in that category.

The rest of Philly's field goal attempts are spread fairly evenly among coach Brett Brown's 11-man rotation. Only centers Drew Gordon and Henry Sims are above 50 percent shooting the last five games, and they combine to average just nine attempts. Starting rookie power forward Nerlens Noel is shooting 45.9 percent, while small forward Luc Mbah a Moute is at 38.6 percent from the field and 20 percent from deep. Guard Hollis Thompson and forward Brandon Davies play big minutes off the bench but have shot 39.4 and 25 percent, respectively, from the field the last five games. Reserve guard Alexey Shved is also struggling with his shot.

Rookie guard K.J. McDaniels and second-year forward Robert Covington -- who spent most of last year in the D-League before getting waived by the Rockets a month ago -- have been the Sixers' best outside shooters the last five games, with McDaniels hitting 38.5 percent of his three-point tries and Covington 55.6 percent of his. No one else on the roster has shot above 33.3 percent from outside in that span, and Philly is shooting 25.6 percent from deep as a team.

The Blazers have matchup advantages at every position tonight and should be able to find ways to score efficiently. Point guard Damian Lillard, who had a difficult time finding good looks last night against Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, might be able to bounce back from his 4-for-14 shooting performance in Boston. He's hit half his field goals the last five games and 58.6 percent of his threes. Lillard's midrange jumper is off right now, but he doesn't go to it particularly often, usually shooting from outside or attacking the basket, where he's had a hard time finishing recently.

Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge went 7-for-21 from the field last night in Boston, but bolstered his scoring output by getting to the free throw line seven times and converting six of those attempts. Like Lillard, Aldridge's jumpshot has been off-target lately. Unlike Lillard, however, he relies on the midrange jumper for half of his points. Tonight's game offers a solid opportunity for Aldridge to get his shot back on track.

Shooting guard Wesley Matthews didn't get a ton of shots up last night against the Celtics, but did manage to hit four of his seven field goals and 2-of-3 three-pointers, a sign that he may be coming out of a recent shooting slump. Forward Nicolas Batum was a bit more aggressive offensively last night in his second game back from injury, shooting 5-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-6 from deep. He played 32 minutes last night in Boston, so he may be healed from the knee contusion that kept him out of four games recently. Batum's two-man game with center Robin Lopez was also on full display last night.

Center Chris Kaman hit six of his 13 shots against the Celtics and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line, registering 16 points. His shooting percentages have dipped a little lately, but he's finished well inside and is the leading scorer off the bench. Lopez has only attempted 7.4 shots a game the last five, but he's converted 67.6 percent of them and can take advantage of smaller centers with his reliable hook-shot.

Guard Steve Blake was the offensive spark Portland needed last night, hitting five of his eight shot attempts and dishing five assists in 21 minutes. He's shot pretty poorly the last five games, so Blake's solid performance in Boston may be a sign that he's rounding back into form. Guard Allen Crabbe is still in coach Terry Stotts' rotation, though he doesn't shoot often. Big man Joel Freeland plays about a dozen minutes a night off the bench, but is not a huge factor offensively. Forward Dorell Wright found himself picking up six minutes in Boston, but hasn't managed to shoot well all season. Wing Will Barton and forward/center Meyers Leonard both picked up DNP-CDs last night, and forward Thomas Robinson is still glued to the bench. Don't be surprised to see Stotts switch up the rotation a bit tonight, as the Blazers are playing on the second night of a back-to-back and are playing the league's worst team by many statistical measures.

The Sixers don't really have any great individual rebounders, but they manage to pull in 50.1 boards per game, good for No. 19 in the league. Unfortunately, they give up 55 rebounds a night to the opposition, and struggle on the offensive glass. Noel is Philly's team-leader in rebounds for the season, hauling in 6.5 per game. The Blazers are one of the better rebounding teams in the NBA, and any struggles against the Sixers on the boards would likely be due to a lack of effort or fatigue from playing the night before.

On paper, Philadelphia doesn't have much of a chance to defeat Portland, even on its homecourt and with the Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back. Still, the game isn't played on paper and Portland can't be caught sleeping, as the Sixers almost took out the 10-3 Rockets a couple weeks ago in a 1-point loss. If the Blazers play anywhere near their average game, though, they should be able to overwhelm Philly and extend their winning streak to eight games tonight.
