Portland Trail Blazers fans have been treated to some of the most abysmal basketball you could ask for lately, making Portland’s 11-point loss to the Phoenix Suns yesterday almost feel like a win. However... nobody expected this season to be about winning. It’s with that logic that Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report gave the Blazers a “C” grade for their season as it nears the halfway mark:
In a one-season vacuum, this has been a disaster. But there’s actually a way to spin the losing as a good thing. Portland is now clearly in the mix for the top pick in the 2024 draft. And there’s still plenty of time to turn veterans like Malcolm Brogdon and Jerami Grant into more rebuild-ready assets between now and February. Sure, this phase of a rebuild is painful. The Blazers probably aren’t going to reach a meager preseason over/under. But [Scoot] Henderson is still just 19 years old. And the growing pains he’s experiencing now could pay off down the line.
The four teams with worse records than the Blazers — the Hornets, Wizards, Spurs, and Pistons, listed in descending order of win percentage — earned a “C+”, an “F”, a “D”, and an “F”, respectively.
Do you think Bailey’s grade for Portland seems fair? Relative to expectations, and looking at this season as a whole, are the Blazers playing about as well as you expected them to?
Portland is currently second-to-last in the Western Conference with a 10-29 record.
