The Rockets and Thunder might have assets Portland wants.

The Portland Trail Blazers are in the midst of a multi-year rebuild after trading away Damian Lillard in the offseason. They maneuvered themselves into position to get Deandre Ayton, Malcolm Brogdon, and Toumari Camara via summer swaps, but the job is hardly finished.

Today Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley highlighted three trade targets for every team before the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline. He mentioned more youth as targets for the Blazers. Among their goals, he listed...

1. Draft picks

2. Cam Whitmore, Houston Rockets

3. Aleksej Pokuševski, Oklahoma City Thunder

Explaining the latter two selections, Buckley elaborated:

Do the Rockets already think they’re too competitive to expose themselves to Whitmore’s growing pains? If Houston has any interest in one of Portland’s veterans, the Blazers should try to get Whitmore in that deal.

Pokuševski has fallen out of Oklahoma City’s rotation, and the Thunder have enough prospects to bypass the long-shot possibility the 7-footer ever figures things out. The Blazers have plenty of developmental minutes available, though, so he might be worth a (super) cheap flier to see if his size-skill combo can amount to anything.

Whitmore was the 20th pick in this year’s draft. He has spent time in the G-League with the Rio Grande Vipers. He has appeared in just three games so far for the Rockets this season and has averaged 7.7 minutes in those appearances.

Pokuševski is still just 21. He was pick 17 in the 2020 NBA draft. The forward has appeared in just five games for the Thunder so far this year, averaging 1.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.2 minutes per appearance.
