Team USA’s men’s basketball team drew Spain for their quarterfinal matchup after exiting group play with a record of 2-1. According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, Team USA was able to enter the seeded part of the Olympic draw because of their finish as the top second-place team. The game against Spain will air at 9:40 PM PT Monday. For Team USA, they face a team they bested in exhibition play. Team USA Head Coach Gregg Popovich is looking forward to the matchup.
“This Olympics is just going to get better as far as basketball is concerned, because the teams are all pretty passionate and very talented and have a lot of individual players that people will enjoy on TV,” U.S. coach Gregg Popovich said.
France, who led Group A 3-0, will face Italy in the quarterfinals, while Slovenia, led by the Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic, will take on Germany. Meanwhile, the Australian team play Argentina. If the United States wants to secure its fourth-straight gold medal, they will need to win against Spain, Australia, and whoever emerges victorious from the France-Slovenia side of the bracket.
