NBCSports Northwest will cease broadcasting on September 30th, a direct result of the Portland Trail Blazers signing a four-year broadcast agreement with competitor ROOT Sports. NBCSports Northwest. The network has been the Blazers’ broadcast partner since its inception in 2007. It was created (under the name Comcast SportsNet Northwest) to fill the void left by Fox Sports Networks when they and the team did not renew their broadcast contract following the 2006-07 NBA season. Now, as the Blazers depart the network, the network itself will leave the airwaves.
John Tierney of KGW News tweeted the announcement, pursuant to an article on the new contract that spelled out the situation clearly:
According to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, NBC Sports Northwest will stop broadcasting on Sept. 30. The source said the company wanted to continue its partnership with the Blazers and actively pursued a rights renewal. The staff at NBC Sports Northwest will be impacted, the source said.
With the Blazers switching to @ROOTSPORTS_NW, sadly that will mean the end for @NBCSNorthwest. The network will cease to broadcast after Sept. 30. https://t.co/C7YHdn4R1x— John Tierney (@jtierney6) June 9, 2021
