The Trail Blazers’ search to fill the head coaching void created by coach Terry Stotts could include Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. According to the Five Reasons Sports Network’s Ethan J. Skolnick, Spoelstra has been a part of Portland’s internal discussions.
We have multiple sources saying Erik Spoelstra’s name has been discussed internally in Portland regarding their coach opening... & more.
We are NOT reporting contact has been made, or that Spoelstra has any intention of leaving Miami.
The report, made via Twitter, explained that official contact between the Blazers and Heat has not yet occurred.
Spoelstra, who grew up in the Portland area and played basketball at the University of Portland, joined the Heat’s coaching staff prior to the 1997-98 season. The 2008-09 season was Spoelstra’s first year as the Heat’s head coach. During his time at the front of the bench, the Heat claimed two NBA Championships and three separate Eastern Conference Championships.
