Following the All-Star Game voting results earlier this week, Mavericks wing Luka Doncic explained that he did not expect to beat out Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard for the final starting spot in the Western Conference.
On Saturday, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon highlighted Doncic’s comments in the aftermath of the surprise result.
Luka Doncic on All-Star voting results: “I didn’t expect that I was going to start this game. I know that maybe [Damian] Lillard deserved it more than me.”
Lillard finished in front of Doncic in both the player and writer vote, but the fan vote served as the tiebreaker between the two talented NBA stars.
Doncic is averaging 29.1 points, 9.4 assists and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. Lillard holds a slight edge is scoring average (30.0), but he trails Doncic’s production in both assists (7.9) and rebounds (4.5). The Blazers are currently five wins ahead of the Mavericks in the Western Conference standings.
