After clinching the 8th seed, the Portland Trail Blazers’ Carmelo Anthony told Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports who the best player he’s played with is: Damian Lillard. As Haynes notes, Anthony has played with plenty of greats in his 17-year career, including Allen Iverson, Paul George, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and more. Anthony shared what makes Lillard special.
“Dame’s at the top for me,” Anthony told Yahoo Sports. “I’ve never played with someone who lifted his team on the court with his play and as a leader. He genuinely cares for his teammates. What he’s been able to do is amazing. He’s the top guy I’ve played with.”
The signing of Anthony in November certainly suprised the denizens of Rip City, but the joy that Anthony brings to the court as he has adjusted to being a Blazer is obvious. Lillard has put in the work to make Anthony feel a part of the team, including inviting him to the Lillard family Thanksgiving.
“I wanted Melo to feel comfortable when he got here. I needed him. We needed him and I think we needed each other,” Lillard told Yahoo Sports. “I wanted him to get to know me and what I’m about and I wanted to get to know him.”
