Today’s holiday features fireworks and the return of organized basketball in the United States. The Basketball Tournament, a single-elimination tournament that awards a $1 million prize to the winning team, kicks off today with four games on ESPN.

The competition features teams comprised of current overseas players, NBA alumni and former college-level standouts. If you are looking for familiar faces as a Trail Blazers fan, Jarrett Jack headlines the list. Jack, who played in Portland for three seasons, joins former NBA star Joe Johnson on a stacked Overseas Elite team for this year’s competition.

Along with Jack, 2019 Summer League invitee Mike Daum is in action today when House of ‘Paign faces War Tampa at 5:00 PM (Pacific) on ESPN. Daum, who averaged 12 minutes per game in four outings with the Blazers’ summer squad in Las Vegas, will compete against a War Tampa team that features former Wofford sharpshooter Fletcher Magee (the NCAA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made).

Finally, former Blazers reserve guard Wade Baldwin IV is featured on Floyd Mayweather’s squad, The Money Team.

The competition starts on July 4 and concludes with the championship contest on July 14. Each game features the Elam Ending, a setup that was utilized in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. The Elam Ending begins after the first dead ball following the midpoint of the fourth quarter. At that point, the clock is turned off and a target score is set (the score of the leading team + seven points). Once that target is hit, the game is over.
