Damian Lillard wants to let it fly from halfcourt this season, according to Aaron Fentress of the Oregonian. The Portland Trail Blazers’ star point guard is already well-known for being able to shoot from beyond the arc with range. In the upcoming season, he wants to take it to the next level, and Coach Terry Stotts can’t stop him.
“I told him I’m going to do it,” Lillard said
To Lillard, taking such a shot that would make most coaches seethe isn’t really that big of a deal.
“I work on my game,” he said. “I adjust the things that I feel like I could do better. But the things that I do well I just keep getting better at. I spend time doing it and I try to expand on that and add things.”
Despite his emphasis on improving his game due to opponents challenging him at the 3-point line, Lillard doesn’t see the halfcourt shot entering his regular rotation of moves.
“It might be once or twice in the whole season,” Lillard said, adding: “I do it just for the challenge and for the fun, kind of, as well.”
Lillard said the halfcourt shot might come when he’s feeling hot and has already sunk a few in a row.
“That’s when you should have your eyes open because it might be going up at that point,” he said.
Even Stotts recognizes Lillard’s improved range.
“As Dame has pushed out his range, I think everybody realized that his range is a threat,” Stotts said. “And, I think he’s been relatively judicious in his shots. But I think we all know what’s coming.”
