It’s not Portland Trail Blazers related, but Blazers fans need a distraction after Portland’s 116-102 blowout loss to the Timberwolves and, well, you don’t see this every day.
Tonight the Oklahoma City Thunder paid tribute to former guard Russell Westbrook in his first return game since joining the Houston Rockets. The video was touching and is making the rounds on Twitter, but it’s not the most interesting tweet surrounding the event. That distinction belongs to a pair of Westbrook’s former Thunder teammates, Hall-of-Fame-bound forward Kevin Durant and center Kendrick Perkins. Neither are shy about voicing their opinion, and they got into it with BIG TIME tweet-storm that started with Westbrook and ended in outright battle.
The opening volley belonged to Perkins, promoting an appearance on ESPN talking about Westbrook.
In about 30 minutes I’m going to give my opinion on @SportsCenter on why Believe that Russell Westbrook is the best player to have ever put on a Oklahoma City Thunder Jersey!!! He is MR. THUNDER!!!

When objections flew to Westbrook being designated over Durant, Perkins doubled down:
Hey Kevin left the door open and Russ walked right in
— Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) January 9, 2020
I think Russ walked right into the door called “Second Round of the Playoffs” - THREE STRAIGHT TIMES!
— Marc D'Amico (@Marc_DAmico) January 9, 2020
KD lost in the second round without Russ when I was there. So what that mean?
— Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) January 9, 2020
His name having been spoken three times, Durant himself showed up with the steamroller:
Yea and our starting center @KendrickPerkins averaged a whopping 2 and 3 during that series. U played hard tho champ lol
— Kevin Durant (@KDTrey5) January 10, 2020
After taking the Rock Bottom, Perkins rose up like The Undertaker, wide-eyed and ready with the Tombstone Piledriver:
Boy stop you did the weakest move in NBA History!!! Up on a team 3-1 in the western conference finals and then go join them the following season?! Heart of Champion right there
— Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) January 10, 2020
That pretty much evoked the three-count and the bell, but for the record, the after-match shenanigans continue. Here’s Durant again at the time of posting:
Weak is starting at center, playing real minutes with no production. Should’ve worked on your skills as much as I did
— Kevin Durant (@KDTrey5) January 10, 2020
The drama may continue all night for all we know. Click through, enjoy the distraction, and thank heavens for Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
