Jusuf Nurkic of the Portland Trail Blazers has been honored with the Maurice Lucas Award for 2018-2019. The Maurice Lucas Award recognizes the player that most resembles the former Blazers enforcer on and off the court. Nurkic accepted the award on Sunday evening at Game Four.
The annual award was created in 2010-11 to honor the Trail Blazers player who best represents the indomitable spirit of Maurice Lucas through his contributions on the court and in the community, as well as in support of his teammates and the organization. In recognition of the award, the Trail Blazers will make a $5,000 donation to the Islamic Bosniaks Educational & Cultural Organization (IBECO), a community organization chosen by Nurkic.
Since its inception in 2010, the award has honored LaMarcus Aldridge (twice), Wesley Matthews, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez, Ed Davis, Al-Farouq Aminu, and Evan Turner. Even with his season-ending injury, there is no doubt that Nurkic deserves this award for his service to Rip City.
