When the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers begin in September, Portland Trail Blazers forward Al-Farouq Aminu will suit up for Nigeria once again. Currently in South Africa for an NBA/Basketball Without Borders event, Aminu talked with Lindsay du Plessis for ESPN about the tournament and his rooting interest in other Nigerian clubs.
That year [2015] Nigeria won the AfroBasket title, and Aminu, who has missed international action since then due to his NBA commitments with Portland, is looking forward to a return to the green and white next month.
The US-born dual citizen told KweséESPN: “The tournament is in September, and I just talked to my team-mates, we have a Whats App group chat, and I realised there was a need for me to play.
”And they’re playing in Nigeria so it needed to be done.”
The article also contains a 1:52 video and Aminu’s analysis of Nigeria in the recent football World Cup.
