The Portland Trail Blazers have engaged the San Antonio Spurs in trade talks for Kawhi Leonard, but the offer doesn’t seem serious. According to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the Blazers join the Clippers, Nuggets, Suns, Raptors, and Wizards as teams who have placed phone calls to the Spurs, but Portland was not willing to give up major pieces.
...no Blazers package includes Damian Lillard or CJ McCollum, league sources said. Because Leonard is a player teams fear could be a one-year rental, many offers are modified.
The report points out that Leonard has expressed a desire to play in Los Angeles and that few teams have been willing to offer much more than future picks.
The seven-year NBA veteran averaged 25.5 points per game in 2016-17, his last healthy season, and he has twice been name NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Leonard will earn $20.1 million in the coming season. He holds at $21.3 million player option for 2019-20.
