The Hornets are finalizing a deal to hire Spurs assistant James Borrego as their next head coach, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Borrego will replace Steve Clifford, who coached Charlotte to consecutive 36-46 seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool also interviewed for the position, along with Spurs assistants Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka, and Knicks coach David Fizdale.
Vanterpool, who is noted for his intensive work with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, remains linked to the coaching vacancy in Orlando.
