Former Portland Trail Blazers guard Bonzi Wells suffered a heart attack at the age of 40. Wells posted a message in his Instagram Wednesday thanking the staff at St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis for saving his life:
Wells was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1998 but traded to Portland before the season began. He played with six seasons with the Trail Blazers averaging 13.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2003-04 season.
The Trail Blazers wished Wells a speedy recovery on Twitter:

Wells participated in Ice Cube’s Big 3 three-on-three league over the summer, playing on a team with former Trail Blazer Jermaine O’Neal. Over the summer, he reflected on his years in Portland. He’s expected to be featured in an upcoming documentary about the early-2000’s “Jail Blazers” team that twice reached the NBA Conference Finals.
