As playoff hopes fade for the Minnesota Timberwolves, they arrive at the Moda Center to take on the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night. The Wolves just lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Lakers less than 24 hours ago, and their core played long minutes.
Injuries: Ed Davis and Festus Ezeli are done for the season. For Minnesota, Nemanja Bjelica, Zach Lavine, Adreian Payne, and Nikola Pekovic are all out.
Since Prince(‘s Estate) doesn’t allow much free streaming of his music, we’ll move on to an act from Minnesota that went from critical alternative darlings, to major star, to one-hit wonder. Semisonic had one big hit, the ubiquitous “Closing Time”.
But the one-hit wonder label meant that some really great music never reached the mainstream.
A song about the lost art of making a mixtape for someone, “Singing In My Sleep”:
Their only other minor hit, ”Secret Smile”, a somewhat old-fashioned love song.
And the title-track to their followup (and last) album, “Chemistry”, a song so catchy that it’s amazing it was ignored.
After their third album, Semisonic went their separate ways, and Dan Wilson forged his own career as a singer, songwriter and producer. But they announced a reunion for a few shows this summer, and “more news to follow”.
And if you have free time, you might read this book, written by Semisonic’s drummer, who discusses how he joined the band and suddenly went on a wild ride he never expected.
