Given the events in Las Vegas overnight, talking about the X’s and O’s of basketball seems a little out of place today. We need a day to rest and reflect before power forwards and PER become important again. All of our condolences go out to those affected.
This seems like a decent time to share stories of togetherness. This is, after all, the heart of the sports experience: not bouncing balls and statistics, but the communities that gather around them, celebrate and struggle together, and find new identity in doing so.
Among both family and friends, the Trail Blazers have provided a connection point to carry us through times when we otherwise wouldn’t have had much in common. The beautiful thing about sports is that divergent people can sit down and watch the same game, finding common ground in the action and emotion that flow from it. My family experienced divorce, loss, and heartbreak. Friendships have waxed and waned. Yet the Blazers always provide something to talk about.
Do you have a personal experience in your life where the Trail Blazers have been a linking point, connecting you with other people? Share it today as we remember the importance of being together.
Don’t forget to come together with other Blazer’s Edge Readers on opening night at Spirit of ‘77. Details through the link.
