Every year SI.com solicits self-described “brutally honest” opinions from NBA Scouts on the state of each franchise in the league. This year’s rendition was unsparing when it came to the Portland Trail Blazers. The scouts had wonderful things to say about starting guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, praising them for their scoring ability and the way they play off of each other. When the topic changed to anything but Portland’s starting guards, the takes got harsh.
On the Allen Crabbe trade:
I don’t think the Allen Crabbe [trade to the Nets] is addition by subtraction. It’s just subtraction. There are more minutes and clearer roles for Moe Harkless and Evan Turner, but they needed Crabbe’s shooting. It’s O.K. to overpay for shooting, and he was part of their best five-man lineup.
On Evan Turner and his contract:
All the concerns about Turner’s fit came to fruition. He kills their spacing both for the guards and around Nurkic inside. There’s nowhere to hide him. His contract is so, so bad.
And the pièce de résistance, this take on Meyers Leonard:
It’s never going to happen for Meyers Leonard. He doesn’t believe in himself, so why should anyone believe in him?
The anonymous scouts also praised the trade for Jusuf Nurkic and critiqued the Zach Collins pick.
