The Portland Trail Blazers love to shoot the 3-pointer. The team is Top 5 in made threes this season while shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc. Much of that is due to Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, two players you wouldn’t think coach Terry Stotts would have to strategize for behind the line.
Oh, but you would be wrong.
This season, the Trail Blazers have needed as much offensive production as they can get from Lillard, McCollum, Allen Crabbe and Maurice Harkless. Their contributions are part of what makes Portland the 10th-most efficient offense in the NBA. Meanwhile, Stotts has added a few wrinkles to his squad’s flow offense that have made for some great set plays during the 2016-17 NBA season.
Today’s video breakdown comes to you courtesy of a play I’m calling Blazers Box Spain.
This play is fun because it utilizes a couple of tactics you see in great NBA offenses:
- Disguising new plays with familiar actions
- Designing plays to complement best players
- Understanding defensive tendencies to program open shots into sets
Take a look at the video above to watch the full breakdown on a fun little play Stotts has run this year with good results.
