Although Portland Trail Blazers forward Al-Farouq Aminu had reportedly been with the Nigerian basketball team for training camp, he will no longer participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics, according to Nigeria Basket. His current absence from the team is due to an unresolved insurance issue with the Nigerian Basketball Federation.

Aminu's Portland teammate Festus Ezeli is also absent from the Nigerian team for the same reason. The NBBF currently does not provide suitable insurance for their NBA contracts should either player fall to injury while representing their country in Rio. Aminu previously competed in the 2012 Olympics with his older brother, Alade, who remains with the team.
