ESPN came out with its World Fame 100 Tuesday, a ranking of the most popular athletes in the world, and Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard came in at No. 45 on the list. Here's ESPN's criteria for its list:
It started off with a simple question: Who's the most famous athlete in the world? Ben Alamar, ESPN's director of sports analytics, devised a formula that combines salary and endorsements with social media following and Google search popularity..
Lillard, who recently made the 2015-16 All-NBA Second Team, has endorsements with Adidas and Foot Locker, among others. Here's what ESPN had to say about the star Blazers guard:
It's good to be a Trail Blazers draft pick who -- unlike Greg Oden, Sam Bowie and others -- has actually exceeded projections for his career. Since arriving from Weber State, Lillard has embraced being Portland's leader, not just its starting point guard. He also raps -- Droppin' dimes, droppin' dimes -- under the name Dame D.O.L.L.A.
ESPN lists Lillard as the 11th most popular basketball player in the world, behind LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Stephen Curry, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
Three of ESPN's top five athletes on the list are international soccer players, and James and Durant were the only two basketball players to crack the top 10.
