Former Portland Trail Blazers guard Nolan Smith has joined the Duke University men's basketball coaching staff as a special assistant, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

Smith played four years for the Blue Devils under coach Mike Krzyzewski, winning a national title his junior year.  He was drafted with the 21st overall pick by the Blazers in the 2011 NBA Draft.  Smith started four games his rookie season, but his professional production never matched his college output, and he was not retained after the 2012-2013 season.

Overall, he averaged 3.3 points and 1.2 assists per game for the Blazers in just 84 total games. He later played professional basketball in Croatia and Turkey before a stint with the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Developmental League.
