Blazers Expected to Retain Non-Guaranteed Players

The deadline to waive non-guaranteed players is almost here, but the Blazers are expected to guarantee contracts.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The three players on the Portland Trail Blazers roster with non-guaranteed contracts are expected to be retained past today's deadline, making their contracts guaranteed through June 30.

Guard Tim Frazier and forwards Luis Montero and Cliff Alexander are not predicted to be waived before the 2:00 p.m. deadline, and will stay in the Rose City barring any trades.

With the Blazers still $14 million below the salary floor, a trade possibility to bump Portland over the minimum threshold is still a possibility. If the Blazers do not reach the floor by the end of the season, that $14 million would be given to the players on the team. General Manager Neil Olshey may eventually look to secure an unfavorable contract in order to gain draft assets while raising the team's salary.

Frazier averaged 1.9 points, 1.3 assists, and 1.1 turnovers in 24 games this season, including one start when Damian Lillard was injured. Montero and Alexander have played sparsely.
