The Portland Trail Blazers continue to exceed the expectations of everyone in the NBA outside of the Rose City. Head Coach Terry Stotts has been a stabilizing force for the team thus far, and Abe Asher of Oregon Sports News wrote that Stotts deserves an extension soon.
"A playoff berth – even if it comes with a losing record – is absolutely worth fighting for. A first round matchup with the world-famous Golden State Warriors or Aldridge’s Spurs would be a fantastic reward for everyone who stuck with this franchise this season.
The Blazers, of course, would get trounced. But they’d also get to take a swing at the NBA’s best on a national stage – and that experience would have much more impact than a mid to late first round draft pick."
The 8 seed in the playoffs has beaten the 1 seed five times in NBA history. Three of those upsets have come within the last eight years, including the Memphis Grizzlies over the San Antonio Spurs in 2011 and the Philadelphia 76ers over the Chicago Bulls in 2012.
Asher also notes that Stotts and General Manager Neil Olshey share an agent in Warren LeGarie. LeGarie has a contentious past with Blazers owner Paul Allen, stretching back to 2010, and that might cause issues in negotiation.
The Blazers currently sit at 19-26, 1.5 games behind the Sacramento Kings for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
