Portland Trail Blazers Draft Pick Daniel Diez Signs in Europe

The second-rounder inks a 2-year deal with a Spanish team.

Spanish website Sportando is reporting that Portland Trail Blazers 2015 second-round pick Daniel Diez has signed a 2-year deal to play with Spainish team Unicaja Malaga.

Unicaja Malaga announced the signings of Dani Diez and Edwin Jackson.

Jackson penned a single-season contract and comes from FC Barcelona.

Diez, the best youngster of ACB in 2014-2015, arrives from Gipuzkoa and inked a two-year contract.

Euroleague.net adds that the team holds an option to extend the deal.

Diez (2.03 meters, 21 years old) signed a two-year deal with Unicaja, which keeps an option to extend the deal until the end of the 2017-18 season. He comes off a breakout season with Gipuzkoa Basket, averaging 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in 30 Spanish League games. He ranked fourth in rebounds and hit 41.1% of his shots from downtown (58-of-140). Diez started his career with Real Madrid, making his Turkish Airlines Euroleague debut in the 2013-14 season, in which he helped Los Blancos reach the title game against Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv and win the Copa del Rey title. Diez is also a member of the Spanish national team. He helped Spain win gold medals at the 2009 U16 European Championships and the 2011 U18 European Championships. Diez was also the top score of the 2013 U20 European Championships, helping Spain get a bronze medal.
