Damian Lillard Wins Twitter

Portland's point guard intercepts a pass from an internet troll and takes it in for the slam dunk.

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

For those who have missed it, Twitter is all agog over the wit of Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, who flamed a mildly-annoying troll who took jab at him yesterday. The incident started with Lillard's tweet about the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic:

Radio producer Mike Ryan captured the troll's thrust and Lillard's riposte.

And that is how an internet frenzy is born.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, Lillard's brain power and humor are on full display. Going to a classic snaggletooth defense is a move worthy of a chess master. On the other hand, it amounts to banter between a couple of folks that may be funny and may be somewhat unkind. I'm not wringing my hands about that part as much as I'm wondering if Lillard should be able to banter with people without it becoming national news. (Yes, irony...front page...Blazer's Edge...I know.) It's not that big of a deal and I'm not sure we all should be gathering around what amounts to an updated version of the dozens.

What do you think? Is this kind of thing newsworthy or interesting? Weigh in below.
