Ladies and Gentlemen, here's the latest Blazer's Edge Night update.
We are trying to send more than 1000 underprivileged kids and chaperons to the March 30th Blazers-Suns game. This happens when you buy and donate tickets for that game from our special sections that have been reserved for the event.
Last week at this time we were at the 400 ticket mark. I'm happy to announce that right now we're over 700!
I also need to announce that the deadline for buying tickets is a week from Monday, or March 9th.
We're starting to get requests fast and heavy now. We've had teachers, foster parents, and coaches e-mail me personally. We haven't even tapped some of our bigger request pools, like schools and after-school programs. We're going to have no trouble giving away those tickets. We need them first, though.
This makes a huge difference in the lives of kids who mostly get to walk with their heads down to school and then walk the same way back home. For some even home isn't that great...not enough food, not enough family. This is their chance to get out in the world, to see something they've only been able to watch on TV, if that. It's their chance to feel part of a bigger community and our chance to help grow the next generation of Blazers fans.
With 700 tickets sold, 300-400 remaining, and 10-ish days left, this is like the Blazers entering the fourth quarter with a lead, just needing to follow through for the win. Most blogs keep score by traffic numbers, link citations, or retweets. We get all those things too, but that isn't us. This is our World Championship. We could quit at 700 and still feel proud, but that's not us either. We want to do what nobody else does. 1000+ kids is our World Title.
Almost nobody reading this will get the chance to hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy over their heads in real life, but you can be part of this championship...a key player. It happens because of you. This is your title too. Your reward is not a ring, but the astonished smiles of kids entering the Moda Center for the first time, realizing that they're going to see a real, live Portland Trail Blazers game. Your reward is the signs, the cheers, the insane screaming when Damian Lillard crosses over his defender and dunk.
Fourth quarter, 6-point lead...championship on the line. Are you going to make the shot that brings it home?
Here's how:
