The deadline to reach extension agreements with 2012 first round draftees is 9:00 p.m. PST. The Portland Trail Blazers took care of Damian Lillard back in July, but have until tonight to extend his teammates Meyers Leonard and Moe Harkless. Letting the deadline pass means that each will become a restricted free agent next summer, as long as the Blazers submit qualifying offers by June 30.
If the Blazers expect either to break out and be in high demand next summer, inking an extension now might be cheaper in the long run. However, with both seemingly unknown quantities at this point, the Blazers may elect to scrutinize performance over the course of the 2015-16 season before making a more concrete decision.
2015-16 Statistics (through three games):
Leonard: 7.0 PTS, 4.0 TRB, 1.7 AST, 0.7 STL, 0.7 BLK, 32.0 FG%
Harkless: 8.0 PTS, 4.3 TRB, 0.3 AST, 0.7 STL, 0.7 BLK, 47.6 FG%
Leonard started the season shooting rather cold, though he is expected to return to form as opportunities for redemption arise. He is also dealing with numbness in his left hand that may be contributing to his woes. This should subside with time.
Harkless has been a solid contributor off the bench on both ends of the floor.
