Portland Trail Blazers Announce CJ McCollum as Back-Up Point Guard

When Damian Lillard sits, another lottery pick will man his position.

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

As reported by The Oregonian, Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach Terry Stotts relayed to assembled media members today that CJ McCollum will be the first option at point guard when Damian Lillard sits.

"Essentially, the plan is, when Dame (Lillard) is out, CJ will be the point guard,'' coach Terry Stotts said before Thursday's exhibition against Golden State.

Stotts describes McCollum's outing versus the Golden State Warriors:

"I thought he did a nice job,'' Stotts said. "He was aggressive scoring - the lineup he played with we needed him to score - and he had only one turnover on the night. Like I said before the game, that's the plan going forward, and I certainly thought it was encouraging.''

The announcement comes at a time when reserve point guards Tim Frazier and Paul Pressey are battling for a spot on the roster, likely to be emergency third point guard given the confirmation of McCollum's status.

David MacKay will have interviews and news from today's practice coming soon. Thanks to DanGraves for getting this in the Fanshots.
