Brian Mahoney of the Associated Press reports on Twitter that former Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach and current New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams will join USA Basketball as an assistant coach.
USA bringing the defense to the next Olympics: [Chicago Bulls coach Tom] Thibodeau, and [New Orleans Pelicans coach] Monty Williams joining [Syracuse University coach Jim] Boeheim on Coach [Mike Krzyzewski's] staff, per source.
Williams, 41, served as an assistant coach under former Blazers coach Nate McMillan from 2005 to 2010, when he was hired by the Pelicans (then Hornets).
Williams effectively replaces McMillan on USA Basketball's staff, as the former Blazers coach and Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni both left their positions as assistant coaches to Duke's Mike Krzyzewski back in May.
Williams is 94-136 (.409) in three seasons with the Pelicans. A 1994 first-round pick, Williams holds career averages of 6.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in nine seasons with the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.
