Portland Trail Blazers guard Nolan Smith has played just 10 minutes total over the past month, as his already miniscule playing time has been ceded to make way for Eric Maynor, who was acquired in a trade deadline deal.
Smith is averaging 2.8 points and 0.9 assists this season and his PER of 6.52 ranks No. 90 out of 100 among point guards, according to an ESPN.com database. The Blazers did not pick up his rookie option for 2013-14 last fall, making him an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Smith, who will turn 25 in July, has taken to increasing his profile by videobombing Blazers Broadcasting before game.
On Thursday, two days after Portland's second straight road loss, Smith stood behind Mike Barrett and Mike Rice before tip of a road game against the Chicago Bulls with a sign that read, "Mom!!! Send Money $$$"
Smith's Twitter account has been full of his plans for the video bombs, which have included a Beavis & Butthead tribute, among others. His large followings on Twitter and Instagram seem to approve the running gag, as does Blazers Broadcasting and his teammates. Detractors -- as always -- can be found.
"Classic Duke nerd," opined Instagram user trey_ball_splashh.
