Underachievers

What is the worst thing for a sports fan?

What makes following a team harder than anything else?

What makes even the die hard fans cringe?

Underachievers. The talent is there, but the motivation is not.

This isn't being caused by any single game, I actually missed the game tonight. No, this is a reaction to a very clear trend this year. The Blazers just don't show up. They don't make the effort. They lose games they should win, or at least, show up to fighting. They underachieve.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Blazer fan through and through. However, if the product the Blazers put on the court is not worth watching, then I am not going to watch it. If the Blazers cannot show effort and make important games count, then they don't deserve me as a fan. They don't deserve me buying jerseys, buying game tickets, or paying cable companies to watch the game.

This is not a new thing for Paul Allen teams. He collects the expensive unwanted players and creates a team that doesn't make sense, where the pieces don't fit together. We have seen it before, albeit with low-character players, but it is still the same result - a talented but underachieving team with no chemistry.

How long before we blow it up again? How long do we muddle around with cast-off talent like Crawford, Camby or Wallace, until we realize the only way to get winning players is through the draft? You cannot buy your way to a championship. It takes patience, diligence and some good ol' luck. I know Allen wants to win a championship before he is too old to enjoy it, but it's not going to happen with this team.
