Oden Plays, Brandon Plays (I think) and away to Miami they go. Rudy is gonna show that Beasley what a real rookie can do. Nate will 1st play, then sit Sergio.....book it!!!! Trans-Siberian Orchestra was the bomb...really enjoyed it (once once my retinas started working again). They are like Pink Floyd meets Bing Crosby. I have no predictions about the number of comments this will get....so going in, I am loose and Confident

10-14 Junk Drawer-Tom in Hawaii edition
I am at work this morning lamenting the fact that I cannot reply to posts. Something to do with the Firewall they use here is not letting the site format correctly. So I can post but not reply directly to posts. Weird. Doesn't matter which browser I use. My productivity has rose do to this and that is WRONG. If this ever is resolved, I can return to my slacker ways....but the way things are going I will probably get a promotion instead. Dang it@!!!

What If?
Dwight Jaynes on Duck's memorial: "It was an emotional two hours that brought home to me how fortunate I was to be a beat reporter covering those great Blazer teams of the early 1990s. Not because of how many games they won, but because of what terrific people they were. Harry Glickman, speaking at the memorial service, spoke about "winning with good people and he was so right. As I watched Buck Williams, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey and Clyde Drexler (via videotape from Taiwan) speak so lovingly and eloquently about their late friend and teammate, it reminded me what an outstanding group of men made up that team. These players of intelligence, integrity and great passion came together under a coach, Rick Adelman, who knew how to put what was a bit of an odd mix together into a winning team. Adelman, also at the Saturday service, built a tremendous pride within the team that was the cornerstone of its success. I was lucky to watch it up close and Portland was fortunate to call the team its own. As far as I'm concerned, that was a championship team. That it didn't win the big trophy really doesn't matter to me in the slightest. It won the hearts of its city and still owns a lot of those hearts. It won the respect of us all to this day. And it was a blueprint, off and on the court, for how to operate a successful pro sports franchise."
As I was reading Jaynes rememberences from Duck's Memorial service, I started thinking about some of the common "what if" questions that come up. Like "What if The Blazers had picked Jordan instead of Bowie?", "What if the Blazers won the toss and got pick Hakeem" or "What if Sabas had come over earlier and played with Clyde and the gang?". I know there is always 1 or 2 people who say that they wouldn't have picked Jordan when that question comes up (and usually called crazy by someone else) but now I think I know why. People loved that team regardless of the fact that they never made it all the way and want to preserve it even in the fantasy world of "what if?". I certainly can tell you that the Drexler era team were my Blazers (the Walton team was my Dad's team and this team may end up being my kids Blazers....who knows), and that holds a special place in my fandom.
So...do you think that if this version of the team is very good...but never wins it all....would you be able to the love them the way that Jaynes (and some of us) love that early 90's team?

Junk Drawer 8-29
Well......College Football started last night. It was kind of a bummer summer without Tiger. I usually watched the Majors (to see what Tiger would do) because I hate watching baseball on TV. A 3 hour baseball game (to me) consists of 1/2 hr of action and 2.5 hrs of watching players scratch their butts/nutz. Glad there is finally something other than baseball (sportswise) to watch on TV (other than Rudy ...not really into the Olympics). I mostly ended up watching bunches of episodes of That 70's Show (That show basically depicted my life as a teenager). Here's to Football. Yeh

Greatest Hits
Ok....I have threatened to do this before but this time I really did it. This is my Greatest Hits compilation of stupid rock song rip offs.
Ya Really Got Me.......(you will have to scroll bout half way down)
And My latest offering based on that Glorious rock anthem You Give Love a Bad Name......By Bon Jovi. This is my ode to the JailBlazer era....Enjoy...or not
Shot through the heart
And youre to blame
You give P-town a bad name
B-ball greatness is what you sell
You promised me heaven, then put me through hell
homerism got a hold of me
When fullcourt's a prison, you cant break free
(uh-oh)You pack a loaded gun
(uh-oh)Theres nowhere to run
You're at the airport
The damage is done
Chorus:
Shot through the heart
And youre to blame
You gave P-town a bad name
I did my part and watched your games
But You gave P-town a bad name
You gave P-Town a bad name
Suck the Smoke between your lips
A towel flew from your fingertips
A basketball dream, then you'd act so shy
Your very first three was like a long kiss goodbye
(uh-oh)You're on a Seattle run
(uh-oh)There's nowhere to run
Flashin lights in a Hummer
The damage is done
Chorus:
Shot through the heart
And youre to blame
You gave P-town a bad name
I did my part and watch'd your games
But You gave P-town a bad name
You gave P-Town a bad name

Mama's got a squeeze box she wears on her chest
When daddy comes home, he never gets no rest
'cos she's playin' all night, and the music's alright
Mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
Well, the kids don't eat, and the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music in the whole damn street
'cos she's playin' all night, and the music's alright
Mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
She goes in and out, and in and out
And in and out, and in and out
She's playin' all night, and the music's alright
Mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
She goes "Squeeze me, come on and squeeze me
Come on and tease me like you do, I'm so in love with you"
Mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
She goes in and out, and in and out
And in and out, and in and out, and in and out
She's playin' all night, and the music's alright
Mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night, oh
You know that mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
Oh, oh, mama's got a squeeze box, and daddy never sleeps at night
Oh, oh-oh

Perception and Donaghy...is it over?
Ya know, the thing is…..it just doesn’t matter if Donaghy was lone gunman with a magic bullet (JFK referrences are cool) as Stern contends. The perception of unfair reffing is out there. Has been for years.
The "star call" has been around sooo long that it is ingrained into the very fabric of the game. Listen to any play by play or color guy call a game, and you will hear about it. Every single game! Will Brandon start getting calls because he is now an All Star? How fast will Oden start to get them? We ask it. Every teams asks questions like these.
What about the end of the game scenarios? Oh….you just don’t get that call with only 10 seconds left. The refs don’t want to decide the game…let the players determine the outcome. As if getting mugged is any different in the last 10 seconds of a game or the first 10 seconds of a game. Heck, the league office even admitted that they instruct the refs to call the end of games this way.
Inconsistancy…..Ohh the refs are calling the game tight tonight. The refs are sure letting them play today. What about the home team call? You wouldn’t get that call back in our place.
You see, people watching the NBA all know these things. The annoucers, the coachs, the players and the fans all know this. Basketball (and the NBA in particular) is the hardest game to officiate. And Stern makes it even harder with is highhanded manner and his lack of accountability regarding this issue. We don’t trust him to do the right thing. So what, maybe David is right when he says that Donahgy acted alone and was rogue criminal. Even if it is so, it just doesn’t matter, because when we hear of any cockamamy conspiracy theory that comes down the pike …...we believe it. When we hear that Game 6 of the 2002 WCF was fixed (or Game 7 of the 2000 WCF) ....we believe it. Why ...because we have seen the unfairness of it all before. Hell we know it isn’t straight.
Soooo now I wonder.... What was Tim Donaghy was talking to Scott Foster about all those times? Were they fixing games together? The FBI says no, but I don’t believe them. Why? Cause David Stern taught me not to
