Game 75 Recap: Blazers 91, L*kers 104

Boxscore

Well, this game was about what we expected.  We shot the long ball extremely well in the first quarter and we had a couple of nice runs and 5-6 great individual plays through the course of the game, but let's face it...the L*kers were toying with us.  Kobe Bryant had enough behind-the-back passes and razor's edge tips to fill up half a season.  He might as well have been wearing a sign that said "Threat Level:  Negligible".  And it pretty much was.  We made that late-game run to cut the lead to 7 before Kobe himself stepped in.  It was like a dad letting his kid catch up in a footrace before he turned on the "Papa stride" and showed him he wasn't quite up to beating the old man yet.  Maybe we can shove some of that back in their faces when we play them at home next week.  Until then it's pretty hard to take this game too much to heart.

All in all this was a pretty basic loss.  We shot a low-end-acceptable percentage and allowed them to shoot near 50%.  We were -11 at the free throw line.  We couldn't outrebound them or force more turnovers and the point margin from our extra four three-pointers weren't enough to make a difference.  Add in a sub-par performance by our main guy and we never had a chance.

By the way, have you ever seen such a collection of bored faces as you saw on the Blazer bench tonight?  Scary.

Individual Notes

--Lamarcus Aldridge's 4-15 shooting was the most glaring individual stat on the board.  He did grab 12 rebounds but shooting 27% on a night when he was supposed to drive the train (and against relatively weak frontcourt defenders) isn't going to get it done.

--Our other two forwards provided many of the spectacular moments of the evening.  Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster each scored 23.  Both were aggressive attacking on offense.  Travis tried pretty hard on the other end of the floor too.  (We won't mention Martell...)  Trout drew 8 foul shots.  Martell was 6-9 from distance.   Our prayers would really be answered if either one of them could become a consistent 18-point scorer.

--Joel Przybilla had a rare (of late) average night with 7 rebounds in 26 minutes.  He got in early foul trouble.  Though he kept his nose clean for the rest of the game and had spurts of effectiveness he never seemed to find his groove.

--Steve Blake had 12 points and 10 assists and shot well at 5-11.  He had an uncharacteristic 4 turnovers but our entire offense was a little bit wonky tonight.  We put all of our point guards in situations where they had to do uncomfortable things.

--Hey!  Sergio Rodriguez was the player of the night off the bench!  He really pushed the tempo in the first half and seemed effortless in his movement and decisions.  He earned some rare second-half playing time too and even though that didn't quite reach the level of his first stint it was still a very good night for him overall.  He had 7 points on 3-5 shooting and made the L*kers play.

--The rest of our bench doesn't merit much of a mention.  Four other guys besides Sergio played and these were their combined stats:

56 minutes,  13 points, 6-21 shooting, 1-6 three-point shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 7 fouls

That wasn't much help.

One-Sentence Game Summary:

Yawn.

its what i expected
i guess the L*kers watched some tape from last time these two teams met and didn't want Gasol to suffer the humiliation of being owned again by LMA so they double teamed him almost every time.  At least LMA passes out of the the double team, something Zach hardly ever did until too late.

I LOVED LMA's acitvity on the offensive boards, he was everywhere, poking and tipping rebounds to team mates.  If their big men didn't fight for the rebound, Aldridge almost always had a hand on it. This was really great to see.

And how about some of those dunks by Martell and Travis.  Baby do i love those

Travis Outlaw drops the sledgehammer on Daequan Cook for a dunk so vicious, it's illegal in 48 states.

Yeah
There were some really nice individual plays tonight.  There were actually a couple of nice passes too...though much of the team seemed to have inherited Jarrett Jack's penchant for jump-passing.

Did anyone question Nate
on why Jack had the PG duties on the 1st half? Sergio was out there but Jack was the one dribbling around looking to turn th ball over some more. He seemed to play a game that only he knew the rules for. Something like " let me see how many different ways I can turn the ball over, first I'll go for a jumpshot and THEN throw the ball any. Then I'll just run around like a headless chicken and dribble the ball of my leg. Then maybe I'll ..................."

Jarrett NBDL?
Although Jarrett Jack can certainly have his moments, this second half of the season, he looks more like an NBDL player than NBA.  Look at CJ Watson with the Warriors-he's played better than Jarrett this 2nd half (most people have) and was in the NBDL in December.  His plus/minus yesterday was minus 18 (2nd worse to Joels 20) and it seems every game his minus is huge.  Do you happen to have a stat on plus/minus for the season for Blazers?  That would be an interesting stat.

Tons of interesting stats there, but here is the general area you are looking floor: http://www.82games.com/0708/0708POR3.HTM

checkout the floortime stats, its not a coincidence that Jack has nearly double the +/- of any other player(in the wrong direction I might add)...

L*ker's announders pointed out
correctly, that once Aldridge was making himself easy to guard by shooting the fade away.  Once he a did an up-and-under he scored an easy basket....too bad it didn't happen until the 4th quarter.

Travis played really well
I thought he played one of his best overall games of the season.

In fact the entire team played relatively well (except for JJ), the Lakers are just better at this stage in the game.  Defensively the Blazers are kind of a mess though.  Every team in the league leaks out because they know the Blazers don't get back on defense quickly.  It's mystifying, but it costs the Blazers 10 points or more every single game.  I don't think I'm exaggerating.

But the time for griping has passed, it's time to look forward to next season.  Since the playoff dream is officially over...man, I can't wait to see Oden in a sweaty Blazers uni.

Travis
This was Travis's best game of the season. He was active both defensively and offensively. 4 plays he made really stuck out to me.

  1. The first play of the game, a very nice put back dunk that set the tone for his game tonight. He rebounded well and was aggressive all night.

  2. In the first quarter, he was up in his mans face defending, using his quick hands to pester his opponent, which ended up causing the Lakers to turn the ball over. This is the type of aggressive defense the Blazers need to be playing all the time all year long.

  3. His steal at half court to stop a Laker fast break and start a Blazer fast break the other way. That was just amazing, he sprung out of no where to grab Odem's(?) pass. Just amazing...

  4. His dunk along the baseline over Gasol. Great aggressive drive, taking it to the hole with force. Either you get the highlight play, or the foul and the free throws, or as in this case, the best of both worlds!

In most games we are lucky to see one of these type of plays from Travis or any Blazer for that matter. Over this summer, I really hope these guys get a bit more of an edge about them, and play with a chip on their shoulder next year.

Reason to motivate them all.

Oden - To prove all the doubters wrong who say he is the next Sam Bowie.
LMA - To make the All-star team, and because he will not win the MIP award this year.
Outlaw - To cement his place in this league, to prove this year was a stepping stone year, and not a one year wonder.
Webster - To prove his is worth that #6 pick.
ROY - To prove he is not a health risk, and he can play all 82.
Blake - To prove he is a STARTING pg in this league, and not just a place holder until we find something better.
Jack - To prove this year was a fluke, he is the Blazers PG of the future, and the future is now.
Sergio - To repay all the players who insulted him this year by going under every single screen, by knocking down 40% on 3's next year, and driving the lane with abandon.
Rudy - To prove he is the real deal.
Joel - To prove this year was the real Joel, not last year.
Jones - To prove he is the best shooter in the NBA, and to earn that spot in the 3pt contest...then win it.
Frye - To prove the Blazer got the better end of the Zach trade, by becoming the rebounding, soft shooting PF they need on the second unit.
Reaf - To prove he is not done yet.
Miles - To prove he can not play basketball anymore, and needs to retire.
Nate - To prove he can coach a fast break team successfully, and to prove his doubters wrong by letting go and letting this team run.
KP - To prove he can build a championship team.
Paul Allen - To prove once again that he is the best owner in all of sports.

So they all have something to prove, and no one is going to prove it for them.

More on Nate
I have mentioned this before, but there was no better example then last night to prove my point. Joel gets 2 fouls and sits.....And Joel was a big part of how they got the lead. So out goes Joel and  there goes the lead and the MO. It's like the game situation is not even part of Nate's thought process, you get 2 fouls, you sit. I feal that I'm ranting, but what the heck is he saving him for UHGH! Oh yeah, and he finish the game with 2 fouls.....
2-4 the who

Don't blame Nate...
We got outscored by 22 points when Joel was on the floor.  There are so many things wrong with plus minus, but it at least shows we weren't killing them with Joel on the floor and getting crushed without Joel.  The L"kers only really have Gasol right now as a true post offensive player, and Gasol is the type of player that Aldridge seems to guard well anyway.  We weren't killed at rebounding either...we just missed so many more shots that it kind of looks that way in this particular game.

Dave = Puddleglum
Lol... I was pumped watching the game, dejected a bit after the third, anxiously, secretly hopeful when all of the sudden the Lakers lead goes from 18 to 7, almost instantly, and crushed but not surprised when Kobe came back in and did what he does. 7 points in 2 possesions. But most of all, I had some of that deep, driving Lakers hatred, laid in the deepest chambers of my heart years ago, start to come back to life. I realized that, for the first time in years, I hated this Laker team in the same way as I used to hate them in their threepeat run with shaq and kobe. It is a very different kind of hate, that has largely been dormant for the past 3 years or so. That is why I am now convinced the Lakers are going to win it all. No logic, just... they gave me that same feeling I had, when I somehow just knew they were going to win it all, for every championship they won in those years.

But, still, I thought it was a great game. The Lakers are so confident, and almost everything falls in their favor, and they are one of the best teams in the league right now, and we played them hard. Maybe they were toying with us, but I got the sense that we are just right. on. the. brink. of pulling out games like that... and that was all without Brandon, Oden, Rudy, and a lottery pick(or equivalent value). Martell had a great game, but for the first time I felt like it wasn't just one of his "ups" in the roller coaster ride that has been martell. I dont know why, but after this game, I think, if Roy, Aldridge, and Oden are untouchable, I put Travis and Martell on the tier just below that.
I also have been a Jack defender, but tonight I was terrified everytime he came in the game. He's convinced me, too-I think he'll be gone next season...

But then, I read you review Dave, and I just felt depressed... lol. I saw it much differently, but, that's the beauty of a multi-perspectival forum such as a sports blog.

'Twas a Puddle-glummish type of game
if you didn't believe the first-quarter three-point barrage was going to last.

But tonight against Houston...Tu-Whoo!  Tu-Whoo!

I was at this game...
It's just as well, for the sake of my health, that we lost. I'm pretty sure those two big Mexican guys in the Kobe jersey would have killed me, judging by the evil eyes I was getting every time I cheered. (Admittedly, my cheering was intentionally pretty obnoxious.)

Worst part of the game was that they didn't reshow that facial that Travis served up on Gasol...no way that JumboTron was going to display that posterizing, and I had a lousy angle on it.
