Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Kings

This is the last Friday Night game of the year!  Man, the season has flown by.  Do you think we can take the Kings and bring ourselves within one game of finishing at .500?  Or will this be a colossal flop provoking streams of angry comments before our posters drown themselves in Henry's and Paul deLay?

Register all of your pre-, in-, and post-game comments here.  For those of you rooting for Hosses we'll try to get their predictions up about an hour before the game.

Want a winning season?
Have to get this one.  Simply have to.

Want a .500 season?  Probably need this one.

Want the Kings to say they were as good as us, and we just got a couple more breaks this year?  Lose this one.

I prefer the win.

I'm frequently right, but always certain

by jscot on Apr 11, 2008 2:58 AM PDT reply actions

4 games left
2 against non-playoff sub .500 teams, and 2 against playoff over .500 teams. With our current 39-39 record, we need 2 wins out of 4 to get that .500 season, and 3 wins out of 4 to make it a winning season.

Tonight @ sac is a must win if we want to have a winning season, and is a "really really want to win" if we want a .500 season.

Tomorrow @ home against Dallas, is a Must win if we want a winning season, and will also be a must win if we lose to Sac but still want a .500 season.

Then Memphis at home is a must win no matter what.

Finally we end @ phx, which will prolly be a loss.

I predict we end up 42-40! Going 3-1 in our final 4 games!

lol ya I am a Blazer fan, can't ya tell?

Sorry, you are wrong
Finally we end @ phx, which will prolly be a WIN, because phx will want to rest and we´ll want to win.

14th!
Look for Channing and LaMarcus to have big games again. Roy will reach double digit assists, but no higher than 14 points. Blazers win with a closer score than the game indicates.

Can we win?
Yes... I dare say I think and believe we can.

On this, all depends.

I hope Artest sits out.  He is mean to us :-(  Why does he have to be so big and strong and good at basketball?  There are lots of other things one can take pride in being skilled at; knitting for one, taxidermy for another.  Why basketball?  He needs to take up a hobby or at least take the night off to reflect on how much he has killed us the last few games.  Basketball isn't everything, Mr. Artest.  Go be good at other things and leave basketball to those who aren't as big and strong and skilled as you.  You owe your country to commit yourself elsewhere!  For at least tonight!

Don't the Kings want more ping pong balls?!  How silly they are, they should want to lose!  WE'RE the ones trying for a winning culture, if they try to win they are just apeing our schtick.  Real original, Sacramento, but we thought of winning the game looooong before you did.  You're just the Salem, OR of California!  Sorry, that was mean :-(  It's just that winning means a lot to us and is important to the franchise and the Blazer fanbase, and we'd really appreciate it if you'd not insist on trying to win as well.  Because we thought of it first and fair is fair and we BOTH can't win you silly heads.  Geesh you're silly.

Let's get this one!  Gooooo LMA!  Gooooo Roy-Bot!  Booooo Spencer Hawes!  Refs, call Mikki Moore on his flopping!  Ignore the fake dreds, it just makes him look like he was shot when barely touched.

YAY BLAZERS!

by Timmay! on Apr 11, 2008 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
The best and easiest way is through bit torrent, although they don't always have Blazers games up the day after.
I use this program
http://www.utorrent.com/

The best basketball torrent sites I've found are
www.sportbit.org
and
http://bt.davka.info/

There are a few others. If you want to use Sportbit you need to be registered, and registration closes in a few days(weeks?).

If you've never used bit torrent. Basically you click on the link and you download a small portion of the overall file, then you choose where you are going to save the file. Then wait for the file to finish downloading. The speeds can vary, but on these 2 sites I get speeds of about 1-2mbps download. It's very simple, basically a 2 click process.

The other way is to get links from http://www.myp2pforum.eu/nba-basketball/17177-temp-links-nba-lp-archived-games-merged-215.html

That page they used to give out archive links but recently they haven't.

IF you have any questions about email me at dheepan.ramanan@gmail.com

A crippled Brandon Roy isn't any good to us. We have Von Wafer and McRob who would love some minutes and would probably play with some energy. Thanks Nate, thanks. Maybe putting in Sergio, McRob, and Wafer would have helped us out this game. Maybe it wouldn't.

But when your team craps out like this you throw in any body you can find on your bench. That's pretty a standard technique.

not that he would have put them in
but having that run to get within 4 guarantees the deep bench wouldn't play much.

by Section323 on Apr 11, 2008 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

No
The reason we couldn't come back all the way is that they were gassed. Nate ran them the entire 1st half while we were getting dismantled by 20. This game we basically used Frye, LMA, Jack, Blake, Roy, and Travis. With a sprinkling of Raef and JJ.

When get behind by 20 on the road this late in the season, with this many injuries, with only a moral objective to play for, you are not going to win the game.

His second unit consisted of

Sergio
JJ1
JJ33
Travis
Raef.

That's when they made their run. JJ33 is most likely injured and in a slump. JJ1 has played horrific basketball for the past 6 weeks and is giving up size at the 2. Sergio can't shoot. Raef...is Raef. Putting out this unit was pretty much asking to get run over by a Sac team that was riding high with confidence after the first.

Say he played McBob at the 4, Frye/LMA at the 5, Travis at the 3, Von Wafer at the 2 take your pick of our guards. We might have been able to do better  .

Our bench has just not been there for the past 3 months but we have had the same rotation even with our injuries. I think Nate needs to risk playing players that are unproven when this sort of situation arises.

Don Nelson: We didn't execute our gameplan in the first half. What's the plan? Don Nelson: Hit threes.

by Dheepan on Apr 11, 2008 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

well, probably true
but I think a coach would be hard pressed to decide to sub out his regulars just on the verge of a comeback, to put in players he obviously doesn't think are that good yet.

I can't imagine it ever happening.

We tend to get "gassed" more than a veteran team would, I think , so probably in the future it will just not be as much of an issue anyway.

by Section323 on Apr 11, 2008 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm saying
Our bench unit seems to always plays poorly these days, it's even more depleted now with injuries to Martell and Joel.

He needs to be doing something different when our bench gets outplayed night after night, but he's not.

We're still seeing Jarret Jack getting full minutes at the backup 2 when he's been totally ineffective for the past month+, we're still seeing James Jones at the 3 when he's played poorly the past 4 weeks, you have to put in some other plays when this happens.

Play some more Sergio, play Wafer who is a real 2 guard, play McBob, play Travis at the 3. You need to explore all your options.

Our bench has to hold the line for the starters and they've been letting them down.

Our bench has sucked
We used to score about 35 points a game. Although some of it is on injuries, Nate has really cut back on the number of players played.

With Roy banged up we can't afford to have our starters play this much, especially considering the fact that our starting unit really isn't going to give us an advantage most nights.

Our backcourt didn't come to play tonight
Roy was invisible in the first half, Blake was 0-9 with 4 or 5 TO's, Sergio was Sergio, and although not a guard Jones was 0-6.  And none of them played a lick of defense.  Jack was the only decent one of the bunch and he had 3 turnovers and contributed to the lack of defense.  It's a shame because Aldridge was great, Outlaw was good and Frye played pretty well (15 pts and 14 rebounds!).  I thought the L*ker game would have given us a shot of confidence.   I was wrong.

I didn't go to cheddar
Ok I had acouple mo' slices.

Here is what I did during the second half o' this Game.

My 14 yr, old Daughter is practicing with a travelin' fast pitch sortball tteam. My preperations have been inadequate, due to the basic laziness of a sixty year ld man. So I'm watchin' the second half with a cheap Easton Baseball glove on my hand and a can o' Hhubbard's Boot Grease (yes i've used mink oil & bees wax but it's boot grease this round). Rubbin' in grease and turnin' the glove inside out, stretchin' 'n bendin', workin' it out. "Cause it is not as flexie as her coach's (which she's been usin' cause she forgot her's at Home). I get into it all greasy, findin' a ball to throw into it. The Games is turned up LOUD on the TV but I'm focused on this glove. Made a big difference in an hour. The Game never drew my atten tion. So it is

Okay, I don't know if you should actually do this
but my best softball glove ever was conditioned as follows:
place softball in glove, place large rubber band around glove, soak glove and ball overnight in a bucket of water.

It was fabulous, the best pocket, no stiffness at all.  I used that glove for all of a high school and (Div III) college career.

(The only reason I'm not sure if you should try this is that it was my pitching coach that actually did said glove conditioning, and if I've misremembered, I'd hate to ruin something)

by Section323 on Apr 11, 2008 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm just too old
I would never put a leathr glove in water.

I just worked it, slept on it. always had a ball in it BUT most of all I used it. Played catch with it every day. Found the guy that could throw the hardestest and caught him with padding (sterofoam wafers or a cheap piece o' meat). Spaulding "Heart O' The Hide". My favorite was a Wilson (Small open web, I play short stop, gotta move the ball outta the palm o' your hand. My first glove was my Dad's and had no web. Great  learnin' tool). Gots chewed up by a black lab o' a freind o' mines kid. Used to buy 'em at Caplan's Down Town Portland in the basement.

My Daughter's Coach says the same thing. Soak it or boil it in water, grease it and wrap it with a ball in the pocket. I have heard the same thing about Bbrooksx Lleather Bicycle saddles. I just put bees wax on mine an d ride on it for a few thousand miles. I am a "Hard Ass".

Her glove is comin' round
after 'bout 20 hours o' workin' on it. 1,000'2 o' softballs pounded into it from all angles and fist poundin'. It will come around if she uses it and I teach her. I use to flex my glove tips on the ground. pound it with my fist, stretch it with my glove hand, make my pocket and get ready every play, until it started to fall apart. Relace it and work on gettin' another ready, until it was better than  the "beater" and I wanted to use it.

What position does she play?
I was a pitcher, but I suck now, because now I only ever play slow pitch, which renders my pitching pointless.  And I can't throw overhand due to all those years of pitching (plus some weird mental block-it's like I'm a Trail Blazer).

So I can play first and that's about it.

But my new glove isn't any good, so I use the old one. However, the padding is all gone, so it really hurts to play first.

That is why I'm learning Ultimate instead.

by Section323 on Apr 11, 2008 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

This is her first year
No position yet. She has been a Basketball Player.

I coached "Fast Pitch" Softball at the High School level for Eight years, knowing nothing to start but the embarrassment of pitchin' slow against fast.

The first thing is to get and use padding for practice, when you et 10 times the amount of catches as during a game. This might be enough to where you do not need to use it during a Game. However always use padding duing practice.

Follow up
I was taking a long time and wanted to get something posted.

If you are going to play 1st Base for a couple years, there is a specialized glove for the position. Check your 2nd Hand stores first. A First Baseman's mitt is like a elongated Catcher's mitt. It gives extended reach and protection to the fingers and thumb. The palm of the hand is always exposed. Use padding during practice. A 200 pitch Catcher, always needs protection.

The protection for the palm of the hand needs to cover the base 0f nthe index finger knuckle and all other,  mid palm and onto the heel of the palm. These are usually sold at Sporting Goods Stores as Catchers padding. I stated befor a 1/4" piece o' flank steak cut to size, will also work. I will be wel tenderized and sasoned, after use.
