Suns Game Report + Exclusive David Stern Video

Did James Jones draw the charge on Amare?  Did Channing Frye really goaltend the ball?  Woulda? Coulda? Shoulda?  It was another frustrating night for the Blazers, filled with the kind of plays that make you stop the tape, analyze the replays, and wish they could be undone.  Alas, we are stuck with the result: a 97 to 92 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

This one was all but over after the Blazers dug themselves a 23 point deficit in the first half.  The team made a valiant effort throughout the second half, benefitting from a stat-stuffing night from Brandon Roy (25, 5, 4 and 2 steals).  In the end, we simply lacked the inspiration and the luck to get it done tonight; aside from the tough call on Jones and the tough-but-correct call on Frye, Jarrett Jack made a number of costly turnovers down the stretch which more than offset some nice plays on the offensive end.  For the Suns, it didn't take much more than an incredibly hot start (54% field goal shooting with 28 points in the paint at halftime), a solid 22 and 7 from Amare, and Shaq's 13 boards (11 defensive) that single-handedly kept the Blazers off the offensive glass.

The biggest story tonight, however, was the off-the-court presence of Commission Stern, who "hopped on a plane this morning" to show his support for the Blazers' recent success.  In a certifiable junket, Stern held court for media members, answering questions on topics from the internationalization of the NBA to the active trade deadline.  Perhaps  most importantly, he addressed the impending move of the Seattle Supersonics.  Here is some exclusive BlazersEdge.com video of his remarks:

To read the full transcript of his nearly 20 minute press session (a must read), check out Joe Freeman's Behind the Beat post.  Joe, if you're reading this, my sincere gratitude for taking the time to type this up.  I will be getting an extra hour of sleep tonight because of this remarkable effort.  I salute your powerful movement.

Postgame Reaction:

Nate on the result: "We missed some easy, point blank range shots early in the game, in the first quarter, and they pretty much got what they wanted, they were knocking down threes, they were getting to the basket, they came down and scored pretty easily.  We got tight, we started to tighten up and basically they got what they wanted and built a lead that was tough to dig ourselves out of.  In the second half, we came out and played the way we are capable of playing, we got ourselves back in the game and had a chance to win it.

Nate on the controversial Amare/James Jones charge/block: "I didn't see it on the big screen. I thought James was in position. I thought he got there in time. I don't know if his heel was on the line, I think if his heel wasn't on the line they missed that call."

Nate on whether fatigue played a role in the 4th quarter: "I don't think so. I wouldn't say necessarily fatigue. Brandon looked a little fatigued with his minutes but other than that everyone else was playing average minutes. Those were shots that you can't hesitate, we had some looks where you are open and you have to shoot the ball...  If anything I thought [the Suns] fatigued, with them playing seven guys, we wore them down and they started to fatigue and we started to get some open looks."

Nate on the Channing Frye offensive goaltending call: "The ball is coming out.  That's a tough one.  Of course, you leave it alone but he's right there.  A huge play.  Again I was away from it, it's one of those things where you are up there and you have a split second to make a decision, do you pull your hand back or [not]... it's over the rim just enough to give you some doubt."

Nate on the early hole: "We missed shots and I thought defensively we weren't physical enough. We allowed them to make their cuts freely, without contact, without grabbing, they got to the basket, penetration was there, we left 3 point shooters, bell and a couple of those guys are left open, and we are 2 for 15 from the three... they were the aggressors."

Nate on 4th quarter execution: "Down the stretch I thought we settled for some jump shots when that came was close... I think we got kind of caught up in the game and not understanding the situation. We had them on a roll and on two possessions Brandon shot a three and [Frye] shot a long ball. Those are possessions where you've got to slow it down and the game is within reach and make sure you get something good... You've got to execute."

Nate on Joel vs. Shaq: "I try to match Joel up with Shaq. Joel has played him pretty well, the two times he was in Miami. He really was the only matchup we had for Shaq.  We didn't attack the glass like we really wanted to. I think the first half Shaq had 8 or 9 defensive boards, there was no one even close to going to the offensive glass. With this team, they only send one rebounder, and our 3, 4 and 5, we wanted those guys to be aggressive going to the boards."

James Jones on the result: "Tonight's game was winnable, but it just shows if we don't come out and take the initiative early, it's going to be tough."

James on the team's inconsistency: "We're still an enigma to ourselves. Sometimes we come out and we are great, other games we don't.  we are just trying to find out why and pinpoint what we aren't doing."

James on the Suns: "They're a great team, you have to give them credit, they went up by 23 and then we went on a run... they remained poised and composed and they made the shots they needed to make."

Random Game Notes:

-- I sat next to Australian radio's Ed Wyatt tonight.  He suggests the Blazers consider drafting Australian Nathan Jawai--who he described as a "6 foot 10, 300 pound aborigine who is 21 years old and can move."  This, of course, peaked my interest.  Here's some Youtube; decide for yourself.
-- The Blazers unanimously agree that Martell Webster is the best dancer on the team.  Martell also agrees. Jack says Martell has some "Chris Brown and Omarion moves in him" which I suppose in some circles is considered a good thing.
-- Did you know? Jerry Colangelo was going to play basketball at Kansas until Wilt Chamberlain decided to leave for the NBA.  Colangelo then transferred to Illinois, where he was All Big 10 basketball and also played baseball.
-- Did you know?  Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver is the youngest person to found a national bank.  He was 23 years old!  He started working as a mortgage loan agent at the age of 16.
-- Amare Stoudemire and Dwight Howard are 1A and 1B (you pick the order) for biggest freaks in the NBA.  Amare did some warmups by dribbling a ball with each hand at varying heights.  He also was working on his pull-up 3s.  Ricola-ridiculous.
-- Grant Hill earned himself a technical tonight at a very inopportune time, with just 3.9 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter.  It was an uncharacteristically unintelligent play from the former Dukie.
-- Sorry for the abbreviated report tonight there was a lot of chaos surrounding David Stern's appearance. Can't forgive my brevity?  Check for a feature with the Oregonian's Ryan White coming soon.

i called it
with 1:04 left in the game, Blazers down by 6 (or 4), i turn to my friend and say "I don't care if it takes all 24 seconds, I want the team to commit to getting a GOOD look. I don't even care if they miss as long as they execute and get a good look".

Predictably, Frye gets the ball on the 3pt line after a tentative pick and roll with Roy. He looks, he pump fakes, and puts up a shot with like 15 on the clock. Jack gets an opportune rebound and crazy putback, but still - we instantly settled for a long J rather than run the offense to get a good shot.

As long as that happens, we'll never be a team that consistently wins.

No Floor Leader in Crunch Time
The "take your turn to shoot" method is pretty rough to watch.  When the game is on the line, you have to go to the KISS method.  Run what is working, milk your mismatches, go with the hot hand.  I didn't see any of that when we had a chance to pull even. Again, I have to blame the coaching for lack of offensive success.  Pick and roll, pick and roll, pick and roll - oops shot-clock winding down - force up a jumper.

Martin??
Anyone else catch Stern refer to "Matin Aldridge" while being interview by Mike and Mike?

I thought
I thought I remembered people saying OUTLAW was the best dancer.

Maybe Marty is looking at a career in the music "biz" after/during his playing days?  He brings a keyboard on road trips, after all, probably composing future top-40 hits and mentally choreographing the dancing in the video.  If he's the best dancer, that means he's pretty athletic and dancing has usually been the key to a successful NBA career.  Everyone knows that.

Some thoughts
Martell no-showed again.  I suppose somehow his supporters will spin it like he has a great future but once again he provided no evidence of that.  That stat line is shameful.

LMA another so-so stat line, but 9 rebounds (4 offensive) is good.  Like I said on the LMA thread, he's playing inside and I like it no matter what his stats look like.  It's going to help him down the road.

Travis 4-11 and once again no idea what a good shot looks like.  Mr. Fadeaway Jumper.  Could be Mr. Twelve Trips to the Line a Game.  Maybe someday he'll be smarter.

JJ back to his old tricks.  3 assists, 4 TO, some of which were downright embarassing.

James Jones got 3 looks from 3 pt land...made 1.  If he's the greatest shooter the NBA has ever seen, as many Blazer fans would have you believe, he needs to get more shots.

Brandon's getting frustrated, you can see it in his eyes.  Playing 42 minutes and being the only Blazer who had a great game, what's new.  It's wearing on him, I'm telling you.

Blake, Prz, and Frye were ok in back-up duty.  Unfortunately Blake and Prz start for us.

This game was thee for the taking but the Blazers went into full-on panic we-don't-know-how-to-play-basketball mode in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.  Everyone except Brandon running away from the ball in terror, 4 guys standing around waiting for a miracle, awful shot-clock management resulting in low-percentage forced shots, failure to stop Steve Nash from getting a coast-to-coast wide open lay-up, etc etc.  AT HOME NO LESS.  Things playoff teams don't do.  Just another frustrating give-away that I hope we see far less of next season.

Martell, Blake, Pryz as your Starters is WEAK!
Martell is never aggressive starting a game (and usually most of rest of the game too). Joel has no touch around the basket, but we need his rebounding. Blake is too slow to run the pick and roll.  So we force feed Aldridge or try to get Roy a look.  Way too easy to defend, which is why we usually get off too a rough start.  I would suggest force feeding Martell if you are going to start him. He is the kind of guy that defers to his team-mates.  Nate needs to change up the first quarter plan, as this has been a year-long trend.

Of course we might also need better talent to make any real difference - that is becoming fairly obvious.

Steve Blake?
What is the deal with Nate's love affair with Jarrett Jack?  It's to the point where it almost feels like Nate is being paid off.  I understand that Jarrett does some nice things for us, can make free throws and get to the basket-but does that really outweigh not only his turnovers, but his very poor defense?

Steve Blake so rarely plays in situations like last night and he could really help us play tough D, shoot the 3 (Especially with Shaq in there clogging the middle) as well as protect the ball.

I just don't understand it?!??!?

part of it
is that blake struggles against penetrating point guards. he is on the slower side when it comes to side-to-side movement. down the stretch when pg's are more likely to attack the rim and are looking for fouls, i think nate feels jack does a better job of keeping the other team's pg in front of him in the halfcourt set. also, he's a little more physical.

with that said, i agree with your assessment of blake's strengths and jack's much-discussed weaknesses. blake deserves a shot and it really is curious that he isn't getting one.

if jack is indeed on the market like has been reported, the more he plays, the easier it is to move him in almost every case (even when he plays up and down).

or, to look at it another way, if nate wants jack around long-term (and pritchard doesn't), he might feel like jack needs to prove to management that he can handle the pg spot full time.

Blake is too slow and ineffective in close
The pick and roll game is killing us. Blake doesn't have the foot-speed and shooting touch to make it work, yet Nate keeps running it.  Jack has a better chance, but his passing and floor awareness is lacking.  We need to stop the FFFing pick and roll with guys that can't do it.  They ain't no Stockton/Malone combo.

dude
Jarrett Jack is vastly superior to Blake, especially last night.

The reason I like JJ is because he is the one guy on the team who is unrepentant when it comes to collecting RACK GOLD. When JJ is in the game, you KNOW he's going to the basket. There is no settling for an outside shot with him.

When I see the Blazers take Three Point Attempts on 5 or 6 possessions in a row, We need Jack. We need guys that will take open shots near the hoop - how many times have we given LMA the ball on a pick and roll and instead of going strong to the basket (because at the moment, no one is on him) he sits and waits for the defender!

Jack takes the ball to the hoop. Simple as that.

By the numbers Blake is the superior player.
We are a losing team with Jack in the game and a winning team with Blake in the game.

I've been following Jawai a bit and also think
he might be a nice pickup for the Blazers.

I'm not impressed by his dunks, as I am by his nice soft shooting touch.  He seems to have more of a back to the basket game than either Aldridge or Frye.  I also like the fact that were we to draft him, we wouldn't have to bring him over right away.
