Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What's the Point?

Jason Quick has a telling article today about the point guard situation.  The overall implication?  If you're debating who the solution is, at least in the short term, the answer may be:  D.  None of the Above.

Joe Freeman talks more about Oden's knee as well.

it's nice to have it spelled out
KP an Nate disagree pretty strongly about the point, and we all know that Nate loves Jarrett as a PG far beyond anything explainable. Nate is always super sensitive to being asked about Sergio, and I have to think that comes from more than just fans like me giving it a lot of attention--i bet Nate is getting an earful from KP from time to time. i'd have to guess that means KP wants to see Sergio more. Perhaps Nate benching him is his way of putting his foot down to KP, showing who is in control? just a guess.

anyway, off to the Rose Garden to go pick out some seats for next year--my first ever as a season ticket holder.

a qiuck note to Pritchrd:
KP, you've got my vote and my confidence. Maybe Sergio will be a prominent future Blazer, and maybe not, i can live with either, frankly--i'm first and foremost a Blazer fan. But unless Jack shows his two recent games weren't the total anomaly they appear to be, then it's going to be hard for me to endure another season with Jarret getting 30 minutes a game rushing blindly into a PG dead-end.

See you there
Lookin for some full season red section tickets. It is going to suck a big one plopping down the dough, but, next year it is going to be exponentially  worth it.

by Sabonis4Ever on Mar 3, 2008 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

just got back
got some mid-court purple tickets, the best we can afford, considering we live in salem which tacks on some extra cash to each game.

i was amazed at how few seats were open anywhere. i'd say there were easily less than 750 seats in the whole arena still available when i left. judging from the huge amount of people there, i won't be surprised if the blazers really sell-out every game next season. which was my main motivation, i certainly want to be able to get cheap tickets to a lot of games and i DEFINITELY want to go to the playoff games next year, so it seems like this really is the only option. anyway, i'm pumped at my first ever purchase of season tickets, very exciting to start that tradition.

Word
I got back a little while ago. I got Red section tickets in 331. There were only about 10 seats in every section. Certainly not what I was expecting. Very awesome none the less. I am now a full fledged season ticket holder to the best franchise in the world. I didn't think that I would have season tickets at the ripe old age of 20, but that just goes to show how much I love the Blazers. I might need diapers for opening night next year, cause I might be so excited I crap myself.

Start wearing them now
That way you'll get used to the diapers and you won't miss a play the rest of the season.

It's always kind of nice to be affirmed as a fan
Lots of people in here have speculated that Calderon would look real nice in red and black and fit perfectly with our system, and if the rumors are to be believed, we weren't the only ones who thought so. I wonder what we were dangling that didn't catch Toronto's interest? Jack, Martell, and a high second-rounder maybe?

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 3, 2008 11:20 AM PST reply actions

I´m thinking about a trade with
Memphis to have cap space. We send them a good prospect they want and an other of those bad last year contracts to Memphis, perhaps with something more (2nd round picks, even 1st round if necessary). And then Toronto won´t be able to compete for Calderon -they have also cap space problems- and must accept an easy  trade.

KP can do that offering less.

Eh, Calderon's defense
is too shaky.  I'd much rather we made a push for Devin Harris in the offseason.  Our first rounder plus Jack and Frye plus cap filler or something.

We don't need a pure point guard, with Roy's style of play.  We need someone who can attack the rim, finish, hit open shots, and defend the Tony Parkers and Chris Pauls of the western conference.  Harris is the perfect candidate for that role.

I am totally super duper way for this
If we got the 13th pick or whatever, and Westbrook is the best option, I am totally mega super duper uber supportive of the idea of trading that pick plus Jack or Frye or Wafer or Miles or whatever (except Webster, Outlaw, Sergio) for one DEVIN HARRIS.  That might even be a fair trade!

The Nets will get a good combo guard in Jack, a top PG prospect available with the lottery pick, and they can really jumpstart the starting over of the franchise.

Basically, if we can get Harris without giving up a key guy, we gotta just eat that contract and get him.  He could be perfect for us.

I'd totally be on board with this trade
proposal, but even though it might be fair, I have a hard time seeing NJ pulling the trigger on it. Admittedly I haven't thought about it that hard, but off the top of my head, I can't recall a single time that a team dealt its franchise player during the season and then immediately dealt its prized young acquisition from said trade in the offseason.  I would love, love love for Harris to be a Blazer, and I completely agree with your assessment of how he'd fit with our backcourt. I just think that our window to acquire him has come and gone.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 4, 2008 3:51 PM PST up reply actions

Well, I figure
the original rumored three team trade had Kidd going to Dallas, Bass and Harris going to Portland, and Trout and Jack and Frye going to NJ, plus a bunch of cap fodder trading hands, but Portland ending up turning the deal down.

I'm NJ, I think I might prefer a #12 or so pick in this draft to Outlaw.  Kevin Love or Roy Hibbert might look good to a team that's got some good interior defenders but no post offense, and I'm not sure I need Trout if I already have RJeff and VC in the wings.

Bring on Stergiack
Yesteryear Dave imagined Sergiak - let's blend one more pg in there to get all the answers - Stergiack.

Interesting
I'd not thought of the benefit of having David Stern as our PG.  He can't pass like Sergio or finish like Jarrett, but I'm sure his presence on the court would impact the refereeing in our favor.

Yes, I'll go for Stergiack.

I'm frequently right, but always certain

The Raps can't afford to lose Calderon til they
figure out what's up with Ford.

Man, that would've been a sweet acquisition though.

One thing not mentioned that we need to have in our PG of the future is the ability to slow down opposing guards.  With Oden behind next season, whoever the PG is won't need to completely stop opposing guards, but we can't afford to keep letting them waltz into the lane untouched like we do now.
