Tominhawaii's Incontrovertible Playoff Breakdown
I did some quick analysis and number crunching of the past two NBA Finals and I discovered some interesting data. I added up the jersey numbers off all the players on the rosters from the 2007 Finals and San Antonio came out to 231, while Cleveland came out to 322. I was not sure if the numbers meant anything, so I added up the jersey numbers from the 2006 Finals and Dallas had a total of 324 while Miami's total was 436.
Assuming that the results are consistent throughout history; it is a given that on odd numbered years, the team with the lowest jersey total will be champions, and on even numbered years, the team with the highest jersey total will be champions. That means this year, the team that is most likely to end the season as the champs is the Boston Celtics.
I went ahead and added up all the teams in this year's playoff hunt. I included the Blazers because this is a blog about the Blazers. I did not crunch the numbers from the Conference Finals so my data only applies to the Finals. If we disregard my lack of research and my last sentence, we can only assume that my data applies to the all the playoffs.
Therefore, we must all assume that either the Suns or Mavericks will come out of the West. Since the Mavericks have a chance of missing the playoffs, I decided to include the Suns. Obviously with a jersey total of 499, Boston will no doubt be the 2008 NBA Champions.
In conclusion, my analysis is acceptable, accurate, faultless, incontrovertible, and unquestionable. Once ESPN finds out about it, I will be able to ditch this pop stand and move up to the big time. Move over John Hollinger, tominhawaii is going to take your job.
Here are the jersey totals from the top eight teams in the East and the top 10 teams in the West for your review:
East
Boston: 499
Detroit: 334
Orlando: 242
Cleveland: 254
Philadelphia: 324
Toronto: 221
Washington: 152
Atlanta: 202
West
Los Angeles: 211
Houston: 257
New Orleans: 258
San Antonio: 217
Utah: 298
Phoenix: 303
Dallas: 371
Denver: 228
Golden State: 229
Portland: 265
Update [2008-3-26 1:53:10 by tominhawaii]: I went ahead and ran the numbers if Dirk Nowitzki could not play in the playoffs and the Mavericks made the playoffs. Their total would still be significantly higher than the Suns. Looks like the Mavericks are going to be in the NBA Finals, if they make the playoffs.

I was actually thinking about this...
Blake (2)
Roy (7)
Webster (8)
Aldridge (12)
Przybilla (10)
for a grand total of just 39! Next year Oden alone will more than double this!
Think how crazy it would be if we put in a lineup next year of:
Jack (1)
Blake (2)
Rudy (5)
Aldridge (12)
Przy (10)
That would be a total of just 30 which is amazing.
or at the other extreme,
Roy (7)
Jones (33)
Outlaw (25)
Frye (44)
Oden (52)
for a total of 161!
er...
Also, if we sub Sergio for Roy in the "high jersey number" lineup, we can get to 165.
Did You Know?
How 'bout Von Wafer for Roy
