Game 71 Recap: Blazers UGH, Sonics YAY

(The score was 97-84 them if you must know.)

Boxscore

Wow.  I know tonight was supposed to be all about the Sonics and their fans, but I think the Blazers may have overdone it a little!  We weren't supposed to get that much into the spirit.  I guess one of the signs of a true rivalry is that records don't matter.  I suppose that makes this a true rivalry.

This game didn't come down to the usual culprits of fast break points and points in the paint.  We got outrebounded but that wasn't really the story either.  The basic gist is short and sweet:  when you shoot 39% while allowing your opponent 51% you're probably going to lose.  I don't think the Sonics could have beaten us many other ways.  But we obliged them by hoisting jumpers through the entire second half.  Lamarcus going out really hurt us badly.  We didn't have any inside presence whatsoever.  Plus we played defense so ridiculous it should have been a Disaronno commercial.  We double and triple-teamed some guys and left others wide open through slow rotations.  And no, that wasn't the game plan as drawn up, I'm sure.  We just got discombobulated, didn't work it out amongst ourselves, and never found our footing.  That play with 6:00 left to go in the fourth where Damien Wilkins saved a ball near the halfcourt line with less than 3 seconds left on the 24-second clock for Seattle and then managed to get a shot up at the rim was emblematic of how haywire we went.  We were moving.  It wasn't really laziness.  It was more like spasticity. Letting 6 Sonics score in double figures means you pulled the goalie after the first period.  And that's pretty much the end of the story.

Before we head to individual notes, an observation.  Despite my best attempts to explain how individual game plus-minus statistics are misleading we still get people who will quote them as examples of who played better and who belonged on the floor or not.  So...I want to hear you tonight.  Where's the chorus of people asking for much more playing time for Jarrett Jack and James Jones, who were a paltry -2 each?  Who's ready to writing scathing critiques of Martell Webster who was -10 despite his 22 points, of Steve Blake who was -10 despite his 9 assists, of Brandon Roy who was -11 despite being our All-Star, and of Joel Przybilla who got 13 rebounds and 3 monster blocks but was worst on the team with a -15?

Individual Notes

--Lamarcus had a nice first half.  His post moves looked quick yet unhurried.  It amazes me how far he has come since the beginning of the year.  However we do have to remember that it's the entire season that counts, not just a great two-week stretch.  Still, I loves me some Lamarcus.

--I wrote down in my notes as Martell was in the midst of his 14-point first quarter, "These are nice, but I would trade them all for 14 points a game, spread out for four quarters, with consistency."  I must admit I wasn't expecting him to miss nearly every other shot he threw up the rest of the game.  He did get 5 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with his 22 points, which is good for him.  He was into this game.

--In many ways Joel played like a man among boys again tonight.  Is there anything sweeter than watching him block dunks?  I wish his offensive torrent would have continued, but he couldn't quite keep his mitts on the ball.  You have to fire a perfect pass to him, which is part of the challenge.

--This was likely one of the worst games we've seen Brandon play this year.  29% shooting, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 fouls, and 11 points total.  He just couldn't get it going.  Maybe it was the homecoming.

--Steve Blake couldn't hit his open shots either, but at least he got 9 assists.

--Travis Outlaw took almost every shot he could tonight.  He did hit 5 buckets for 13 points but I'm looking at 3 turnovers vs. 2 rebounds and 1 assist and I'm thinking he didn't score enough to make it a good game. From what I can see it looks like he's resumed an early-season habit of rushing things a little too much. When he gets the ball he looks a little hyper instead of composed and confident. I'm not as fond of that Trout as I am of the guy who destroys opponents singlehandedly in the fourth.

--Jarrett Jack drew a team-high 5 foul shots and made them all en route to 10 points with 3 assists.  Considering how he's played the last week or so, that's a decent game.

--James Jones played 14 minutes but only took 1 shot in a game where we shot nothing but long jumpers.  You can't have that.  It's like saying the weapon of choice tonight will be swords and then leaving your Scottish Claymore at home.

--Channing Frye had 5 rebounds in 17 minutes.  That part of his game is solid.

Three-Sentence Game Summary:

We were the first team with a winning record Seattle has beaten since we were the last team with a winning record they beat 17 games ago.  That's 2 against us when they've only had 3 other victories against winning teams (at the time) all season long.  Oy vey!

The Second Unit
[rant]

The Second Unit played HORRIBLE tonight.  It made me wish that the Blazers had a player that could create shots for other players.  You know because the second unit has like 3 or 4 good shooters at any given time, if we only had a player like Colderon that could get the second unit shooters in a rhythm so that they could shoot out of their slumps and become more effective even after that shot creator left.  You know, some one who is good at passing and could play an up tempo game that exposed the Sonic weaknesses.

I think we had a good passer, I even think he looked like Blake at a distance, but with different hair and funny socks.  Maybe he is stuck in the chasmal depths of Nate's dog house.  I would go looking but I traded my spelunking gear for boozes so I could forget the idiot move by Nate not to play any of the Blazer's projects even after they are eliminated from the playoffs.  It not like Brandon has foot and knee problems, or Joel has any problems staying health for a season, or Jones has knee problems, or our young core could use at least diminished playing time in many of their first whole seasons to keep them from looking like the Spurs in 8 short years.

It is not like playing the project/younger guns could arm KP with more ammo for trades, allow him to put the final touches on a team destined to have championship hopes.  To dupe bad GMs into taking a player with one good week off our hands for a future ROY winner.  Its not like when you score 10 POINTS! in the 3rd on the WORST defensive team in the NBA, a pass first point guard with a habit of making things happen could have be worth the risk.  Its not like a PG that excels in up tempo games could have helped, if only by allowing him to have a good game and raise his stock so KP feels good about trading him away, or make Rudy feel like he is wanted in a place 100 times zones away.  No, Nate has been playing his cards right.

Don't Forget about Oden

well said
but Dave likes to delete posts and diaries that accurately question some of Nate's decisions.  Seriously though, Nate is screaming for us to push the ball, and he is playing Jarrett Jack? I mean, you want Jarrett Jack running your uptempo unit?  Isnt that a oxi-moron or something? Maybe not, but I simply dont understand how Sergio gets a DNP on a night where our offense was that bad.  How about mixing it up a little Nate? When your best post goes down, you need to adjust and change things up.  This didnt happen and the lowly sonics outscored us by 13 points in the last 19 minutes.

I hope Aldridge is ok...

Enough
My patience is wearing very thin with this kind of thing.

There has never been a post deleted since I've been at this site because of fair, substantiated critiques of Nate, me, or anyone else.  The ones that get deleted are the ones that use this site to hurl unsubstantiated accusations or that are more combative than substantial.  If you've got a problem with that, take it up via e-mail.  Otherwise let's not be hurling MORE unfair accusations because then your comment deletion prediction will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Dave is lenient
Especially when posts are written in the heat of the moment.  (See Damir on the 2007 lottery thread)

I was hoping I wouldn't come off as too crazy, but I was really mad that Nate wouldn't even play Sergio when the game was tailor made for his skills, the team was in desperate need of a change up, and with the Blazers having no chance to make the playoffs.  How more of an idea situation could it get?  Oh wait, Nate wasn't going to take ANY risk because he is a Sonic, thats just great!

I listened to Wheels as long as I could
When he started his trademark moaning and crying during the third quarter I had to shut him down.

Did you know that Damien Wilkins would be an All-Star if he played the way he plays against the Blazers every night? Yep, Wheels said it.

Did you know that Seattle would not be a lottery team if they played the Blazers every night? Yep, Wheels said it.

Wheels is a top notch play-by-play guy when the team is winning. Unfortunately when the team plays poorly he becomes a sour and sorry homer of homers.

I cannot speak to the Wheels thing
as I have not heard him in years over the air, but I will say that I have a difficult time getting worked up over things that seem to swing a lot of people.  I mean, weren't we expecting some losses?  I know ones like tonight's are particularly odious but we've also had some fantastic wins.  I don't think the Blazers will be doing this two years from now, so what's worth jumping off a bridge over?

for me
It's about the fact that they should have been better... than THIS.

We generally beat the teams we're supposed to and seattle is at the top of the supposed to list.  We failed and we failed in extremely poor form.

Also, it highlighted issues I've seen in past games that I find concerning because the blazers look like they're regressing to me.

Naw, it doesn't take away from other things too much, but I want improvement and I only see that from the Ltrain.

Team OK just has to say that we'll take the lead with no delay. We have the players to keep the pace and in the end we'll win the race.

I used to like Wheels, but you're exactly right. He is SO negative when the Blazers are losing. Sometimes I'm thinking "We'd better alert the Blazers' suicide watch that Wheels is on the brink again." It's seriously a major turnoff to pretty much anyone who listens to the games on the radio.

Not much to say besides AWFUL.

What happened to LMA?  I had the Sonics feed and they didn't even remark on his absence.  Is he hurt?

I recorded the game and watched on my DVR just now.  This, uh, was supposed to be a win.  I guess we got screwed by the refs again :-(

The Bullets are playing well, so we need to actually PLAY AN NBA BASKETBALL GAME like real pros do to beat them.

We might be the only team this season to not score 150 points on these Sonics.  What an awful night offensively.

Thank goodness this hasn't happened much this year.  I still think we'll finish at .500 or just over, but losing this game hurts.

Ok
I just read what happened to LMA in the Oregonian's recap.  I hope he feels okay, and I'm glad the X-rays were negative.

Sonics' post game just said the last team the Sonics held to under 100 points was, GUESS WHO? Us Portlander Trail Blazerses.  I guess I wasn't too far off when I said we're the only team not to score 150 points on this team.

Since Roy has always played poorly in Seattle, maybe it's good they're moving to OKC?  I guess Stern just really wants us to win a title is all.

I'm starting to think our favorite team (the Blazers) are young and inconsistent and have trouble putting away teams they SHOULD put away.  I don't like to think that way, but it might be true.  I know, I know, I'm not a real fan anymore :-(

Hey, but we play tomorrow.  I didn't even realize that; I've been too busy.  Let's bounce back with a home win, shall we?  The Bullets could cause us lots of problems, but we can beat 'em.  Those DC dudes are hard to predict though...

I like Antonio Daniels and I wish we still had him.  His defense and veteran savvy would be a nice addition to our 2nd unit, on the real tip yo.

It was a tough game
I was there at the game. Had pretty good seats to see it all happen. The turnovers were definitely problematic. That kept the Sonics in the game, in my opinion.

The loss of LMA was painful as well. His presence down low was great in the first half since it got our guys open. But in the second half, they couldn't push inside, get the offensive boards, or anything for that matter. Granted, Frye and Pryzbilla are good big men, they don't have the touch or game in the low post that LMA has.

Seattle just got on a roll in the third and fourth quarter with their shooting. You could double-team them, triple-team them, they didn't miss. Just have to give them credit there.

And Pryzbilla's block on Green's dunk attempt was amazing.

I do admit that I'll be sad if (more like when) the Sonics leave Seattle though. Despite the fact that they're our rivals, all that history will no longer continue for the years to come. I hope their supporters can somehow convince potential investors to buy it from Clay Bennett.

I'm pretty upset about this game
I think i'm the most upset that I've been in the past two years as a blazer fan.

seattle is not that good of a team and we gave it to them.  It didn't help that I had a friend who said "blazers will lose" to me during the game and I told her "no they won't"  (not the girl I'm dating by the way because HOW could I date a girl like that!!!???)

There was no back to back.  Sure they only had one day of rest, but they were traveling from south to north and not that far.

There is no excuse on this one that I find acceptable.

Sure, Aldridge went out, but we're supposed to have a good team that can handle that.  Instead there was NO defense (and this has been a problem for a while for some reason) WHY were we not attacking inside against this team?  Are players refusing to do what they're told to do by the coaches or are the coaches not recognizing that they need to attack inside?

Whatever the reasons, I feel that the blazers KNOW what they need to do, and they're choosing not to do it for whatever reason and this game REALLY showcased it.

I love the blazers, but they need to start doing what they know they need to do because there was NO excuse to NOT be doing that against a weak Sonic team.

I can't wait for Oden to get in because of his competitive nature.  I feel that this team really is lacking and needing that.

Also, as this team continues to "unravel" to some extent with worse defensive play as the season goes on and other mistakes, I think it's a time to make some off season moves.

To be clear, I'm not advocating blowing the team up, but I think there are clearly some pieces that don't fit with what we're doing.

Also... Webster... 15 in the first and then... nothing???  Seriously???

Now, after all that venting, I'm sure the blazers are tired, but seattle has been playing the same season we have, so I dismiss that reason for our poor play as well.

Very discouraging and a friend who said "I told you so" REALLY didn't help.  This is the first time I've been a bit angry at the blazers.  I hope they're hanging their heads in shame over this loss because that was just disgusting.

I say play the bench players and lets see what the buried players can do with significant time because it doesn't look like this team has the will to win and really make the play-offs.

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Okay, I'm going to go take a deep breath, and hopefully i feel better about the blazers tonight now that I've vented.

Team OK just has to say that we'll take the lead with no delay. We have the players to keep the pace and in the end we'll win the race.

Did Roy mail one in?
Or he was hurt, or sick, or something?  It wasn't a case of him getting great shots and missing, he simply wasn't working to get better ones.  I know it's been a long season, and this was the third game in four nights or whatever but so what.  I thought for a while Brandon was just focusing on getting his teammates shots at his own expense, but when it became clear he was needed he didn't step up - at all.  Don't give me that garbage about Seattle's length bothering him.  He just didn't come to play for whatever reason.  I hate to call to Brandon because I'm a huge fan but I'm just telling it like it is.  Forget about the points and the shooting, 4 fouls, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 0 steals, and 0 blocks in 40 minutes isn't like Brandon.

LMA was sub-par (1 rebound in 22 mins??) even before he left with the injury.  Not terrible, just not as good as he's been.

Martell was great for a quarter, disappeared the rest of the game.  But I guess he was the 'hero' last night.  5 rebounds and 3 assists in 33 minutes is decent and his defense met the minimum standards.

Prz was ok.

Blake was ok.

Travis Outlaw seems pretty ineffective these days.  I wonder if his low basketball IQ is going to hold him back from ever being a star.  On offense, he has absolutely no concept of what a good shot is.  It's catch/shoot no matter where he is on the floor, how much time is on the clock, even if someone else has a better look.  His shot looks pretty when it goes in, and we all have fond memories of The Streak when he couldn't miss, but it's back to real-life now and he's not going to make enough of those 18 footers to be effective.  As we can now see from his 43% FG (and rapidly dropping) the laws of averages are catching up to him.  And with his quickness and leaping ability, he can get better shots nearly always!  On defense, if you just watch closely you can see how bad he is - how often he gets beat, how often he goes for a block and gets a foul/allows an offensive rebound, how often he fails to help out quickly enough when a teammate is beat.  1 assist, 2 rebounds, 3 fouls, and 3 TO in 21 minutes...ugh.

Channing was ok.

JJ was JJ.

James Jones took one shot in 14 minutes - did he really play that many minutes?  I don't remember him at all.  2 rebounds, 1 steal, nothing else - I guess that's why.  I like James Jones as much as the next guy, but does he honestly think he's going to get a huge contract somewhere?  /chuckle

It was yet another case of the big two struggling and nobody else stepping up.  I remember thinking before the game that Seattle was in tank-mode and Portland was playing like it meant something and what a dull uninspiring game it was going to be.  Well it was still dull, but for ALL THE WRONG REASONS.  Last night was yucky, and I'm pretty disappointed in the gang.

At one point
I yelled (from Row 20 - Section 103) - "Goddammit!  Drive, already, Travis!"  I don't know if he heard me but the next possession he took the ball to the rack instead of bricking another 18-footer.

However, for a while, I was lucky enough to be right by the Blazers bench (my brother-in-law was there) and I have to say that Oden is frickin' huge!  He makes Joel look wimpy (which isn't easy).

And Durant looks like Manute Bol out there - no body mass at all.  A couple of times, I thought LMA was going to snap him like a twig.

I think it was all that talk
about it being a winnable game.  Blazers went into it thinking they'd already won it and when Seattle actually offered some resistance they didn't know what to do.  When someone punctures your balloon it's awfully hard to blow it up again.  (And this team, more than most I remember, seems to feed off each other - and if one isn't eating none of them do.)

I really wished we'd see Wafer and Sergio and Raef - I know Nate likes to stick to his rotation, but when the guys aren't getting it done, just throw caution to the winds and let the other guys play.  I think we know by now that when Travis & Martell & Jones & Jack aren't scoring (or stop scoring) nothing is going to change.  Sergio, Wafer & Raef aren't that bad - had they gotten to play I'm sure the game wouldn't have been any worse and the others would have gotten some rest.  It's not like throwing in the towel - it's looking for something that works.

I will bite Dave
The + - stat gets a bad rap.  What happened tonight is pretty simple.  Our starters sans Aldridge got beat badly by their starters.  Our bench didnt get beat nearly as bad by their bench, but still ended up in negative numbers.  You can whine about how its not accurate all you but if you think Jack would have done any better in Blakes place, you are crazy.  It is what it is, they outscored us by 15 when Joel was playing.  I dont understand why that is so hard to grasp, he may have grabbed a lot of boards, but we didnt outscore them with him in the game.  Isnt that all that matters?  who can score more points?  Last I checked getting more rebounds doesnt directly win you a game, but outscoring your opponent does.  The + - stat displays exactly that.

On a similar note, I find it funny that these summaries  consistently understate Blakes performance while overstating Jacks.  Blake had 7 and 9 on 3-8 shooting, yet that translates to: "Blake couldnt hit a shot, but at least he had 9 assists".  Why not ridicule Jack for his poor shooting? Blake shot 38% while Jack shot 33%.  Instead we get the same old line of crap about Jack getting to the hoop and drawing 5 foul shots, OUTSTANDING!!!  Thats a "decent game"?  I dont know where we would have been without those 5 foul shots, probably down like 50 or something...

by myemic23 on Mar 25, 2008 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

The standards are different
for one.  Blake is our starter and a veteran.  Jack--and the line said decently considering how he's been playing--is neither.

Also I mis-read the three-point shooting line in Blake's boxscore for the field-goal shooting line.  Blake was 1-5 from three-range, which still pretty much qualifies as not being able to hit a shot.  But you're right, he was 3-8 overall.  And Jack was only 2-6.

An observation
Might the early summer start that the players, fans and coaches alike, praised as an unprecedented show of team unity be catching up to players like Jack and Roy? Last night's game was just plain flat. JJ might be been better off to let that primo parking spot go to somebody else next year so he has gas left in the tank for when it really matters. We have not seen many games like this from Roy this season, and I know he has played a ton of minutes, but he sets the tone for this team, and when he gets knocked down and lays on the floor without getting back on defence......well that just can't happen.
2-4 the who

by 24thewho on Mar 25, 2008 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

Why don't we milk a play until it runs dry?
It looked to me like we were running plays for Martell in the first quarter and he was red hot.  Seattle was not guarding him and he got clean looks (and makes).  Then we just stop running the plays . . .  Granted, Martell ended up launching 20 shots, but not in the flow of the game or off set plays.

On the other hand, we have B-Roy being very ineffective with one-on-one play, and we still play him 40 minutes.  People have argued that Jack and Roy are better "floor generals" even if they are not good point guards statistically, but there was a wretched lack of leadership by Roy and Jack not matter how you measure/judge it.

I think Portland's shooters (Webster, Jones, and Outlaw) need structure to thrive.  To have structure, we need a point guard to play point guard -- this is why Blake's numbers can look (and be) good -- because he is actually running plays and hitting people with passes when they are open.

I'd like to see B-Roy play more point guard and not just be the guard with the ball in his hands going one-on-one.  We got used to his fourth quarter heroics and now we're using him as the quasi-point-guard and pairing him with Jack (who is, at best, a quasi-two-guard).

I still think we should be playing Roy fewer than 40 minutes a night, but not as punishment, rather as an opportunity to focus on being a true point guard in the pre-Rudy era.

While I've liked the recent trend to "develop" LMA as a PF, I'm not sure I like the two-dimensional aspect the team takes on by focusing only on LMA and Roy.  When they're both "on," the Blazers do well, but when they're both off (as was the case in Seattle) the Blazers lose.

We don't have to wait for Oden to "return" (how can anyone return to a place he's never been before?) or for Rudy to come over to be a competitive team with more than 2 stars.  If we actually run plays and keep using them until the cow runs dry, we can still have a winning season AND "develop" some of our players other than LMA and B-Roy.

My understanding was that the +/- thing was a statistic to use over large volumes of games, no? It certainly seems feeble to me to use in a single game.

I like the theory behind it: let's see how the team performs when you're on the court versus individual stats. I think it can probably be refined somewhat... but to settle arguments by appeal to statistics, if you have a large enough data set I think it should be fairly sound.

I think someone mentioned that efforts were being made to track team rebounds while a given player is on the floor on the theory that good technique and boxing will lead to better rebounding irrespective of who actually gets their hands on the ball.

A super-sized serving of stink-a-roni
I've been pretty good about handling losses this year, but this one leaves a really, really bad taste in my mouth.

Put me down as totally deflated and jealous of anybody who can work up a rant.

Pretty funny
Brian Hendrickson didn't call his game review a recap, he called it an autopsy.
