Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Sonics

Well, this may very well be it.  The probable end of a natural rivalry that has been around since the beginning of our franchise.  I suppose the only way to do it justice is to go out and KICK THEIR BUTTS, eh?

I'll be there...
Taking my parents (who are driving up from PDX).  Hope the Blazers "blow 'em up real good!"

Clarification
I meant the Sonics...not advocating blowing up my parents!  :-)

How about
a genuine blowout, for once?

They can't really stop the current version of LMA, can they?

This may be Brandon's & Martell's last chance to play in Seattle.  How about if they both go for career highs?

I'm frequently right, but always certain

Seems to me ...
... that this whole move the Sonics to OKC has been orchestrated by the Stern administration for quite sometime now.  The Commissioner appears to have had it in for the city of Seattle.  Of course, Seattle's lack of response didn't help.

by Renegade on Mar 24, 2008 10:42 AM PDT reply actions

Stern's all about the greenbacks...
..................................................... half a billion for a MLB park; half a billion for a NFL stadium...

"Hey, where's OUR half a billion?" Stern asks.

So the Sonics become a sacrificial lamb so that the next city to have public stadium funding on the ballot has the fear of Jesus and votes yes. It's all about getting piggish private fingers into the public till...

Good for Seattle residents.

I
Would like to see james stay healthy for a full year and see his capabilities are for 82 games. I am not as high on him as others are but there is no denying our wins and losses with him in the game. Hope he stays. And I hope we get LeBron.

by Sabonis4Ever on Mar 24, 2008 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I like jones
but he really can't be in the long term picture for the team. He's a two dimensional player - outside shooter/savvy vet.

If Martel and Outlaw can't step up into those shoes in a year or two, we've got bigger problems than resigning Jones.

I think he's probably gone. Someone will pay him more than Pritchard who's got his eye's set on cap space in 09.

by bubba on Mar 24, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I beg to differ
Sometimes you need exactly that - someone to come in off the bench, settle the team down, and ice a few threes.  A championship team can be made by 3 'stars' and a bunch of role players.

by DonkeyShins on Mar 24, 2008 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Early in the year...
....................... I was sure KP would figure out how to keep Jones around at any cost.

Now, I think if he opts out, he's gone -- regardless of where the market is at.

This subject to change if Marty or Travis gets shipped in a deal for a PG, of course.

That sucks
I didn't realize this would probably be the last time we play the Seattle Sonics until I read this... kind of feel bad for them... I'll still take the win though. I'd love for the Blazers to have a winning season for the first time in a while, it would really be a good trophy for our progress this year (along with the past few). My goal is 42 wins.

by amitp06 on Mar 24, 2008 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah
I just realized this will probably be the last Sonics home game I go to. I guess it's appropriate that they're playing the Blazers, so I get to see my two favorite teams go at it for the last time in Key Arena.

Sad day 2 day. JJ, DJ, Sikma, Slick & Payton, all erased from the books of Seattle, bound for OKC? UGH.

Nate just may be the last great man standing in the Emerald City of hoops (and hopes). In Portland we trust.

Character counts the most, but rarely truly reveals itself.

And from what I see, now in the B Ball loving NW, P Town stands alone as the ORACLE of hope.

I don't want Seattle to leave
But it isn't because I would hate to lose a rival, because I've never really seen them as a rival at all.  The rivalry always seemed like something out-of-town media types would trumpet, because they're assuming we got a rivalry.  I care a lot more about beating the Lakers or the Jazz than I do about the Sonics; of course, I love to beat the Sonics because I love all victories but they aren't hated by me more than any other team.

It is probably because our respective teams have been good at different times, or because we are usually better.  Nothing negative really, just not a "rivalry" I get worked up over.

All that said, like everyone else I HATE HATE HATE what has happened in Seattle and it sets a horrible precedent for the entire NBA.  A team supported for 40 years gets sold by a cheap owner to the wrong guy, and all of that history can go bye bye in just a few years.  It is awful what has happened...

Let's beat 'em though, blow 'em out SO GOODLY that Bennett rethinks owning a rebuilding team and decides to sell the Sonics back to local billionaires.  Losing this badly isn't worth it, he'll think!  So let's win early and WIN BIG!

The
Sonics have a better chance of staying in Seattle than the Blazers do of blowing them out. We love to practice our late game execution too much and the world would end if we played any of our scrubs. That being said, I think if this game was in the Roars Garden we would cruise to victory, just not on the road.

by Sabonis4Ever on Mar 24, 2008 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Just redefine the word, silly!
Yeah, with your GRANDPA's definition of "blow out" we don't blow out anyone, ever.  So alllll ya gotta do, silly face, is redefine what a blow out is to you!  And to me, any win where we score 3 or more points than the other team is a MASSIVE, HUGE, DEMORALIZING biggety wiggety BLOOOOOW OOOOOOUUUT!

We've blown teams out in, like, 30 games this year.  By my calculations we've won in blow out fashion 147% of the time.  I like those odds for tonight!

Maybe enough Portland fans will drive 3 hours north to cheer live for our Boy-Men that it'll seem like a home game.  Plus, Durant has to wish he was a Trail Blazer and will try to win the game for us to curry favor with KP in hopes KP will either trade for or sign as a free agent in a few years.  Durant has to think of life after the Sonics, and what better time than now?

Not having watched a game in a while...
As soon as I sit down, I notice 2 things:

Frye is in. I really don't see him being a permanent piece of the puzzle.

Martell could solidify his place on this team if he became a show-stoppin' defender. His scoring ability is at least equivalent to Bruce Bowen's, if not better. I sat down and watched him drain those threes...great stuff. If he could just become a fairly good defender, he would be a lock for a few years. I don't see him being a 22 ppg player, but if he can keep doing 10 or 12 and have good D, he would really be worthwhile.

Watching from courtside
Roy looked tired...really tired.  For that matter, so did Joel.  Not sure what was up, but aside from JJ, Martell and Blake, the Blazers looked out-of-sync.  Even LMA, who had some good moves (and said 'Thanks!' when I told him 'Good hustle' on the way to the locker room), looked a bit off tonight.

Also, the Seattle fans were really in to it (although I found it annoying that the announcers turned up the music every time the 'Save our Sonics' chant started up in order to drown it out).  They were giving a big emotional lift to the Sonics tonight.
