Game 70 Recap: Blazers 83, Clippers 72

Boxscore

This was another one of those strange games.  It seemed like everybody either had a fantastic game or a crappy one...not much in the middle.  We got carried by 3.5 guys and endured through the play of all the rest.  Fortunately the Clippers were just as banged up as ever.  I feel bad for them and I am officially announcing that ClipsNation does NOT owe us a song.  It would have been fun to come up with one for them but it's no fun making them pay up with half a roster.  Instead we'll continue the challenge until the next time we meet, hopefully with complete lineups.

Another oddity in this game was our relative bounty of fast-break opportunities.  These stemmed from once, central source:  Joel Przybilla DESTROYING everyone on the boards.  Again "everyone" is a relative term here, as Los Angeles had nobody to throw in there.  The lesson here is not just how great Joel is, though we'll give him full marks and extra credit besides.  The bigger lesson is this is what the team looks like when we are confident about rebounding.  All it takes is somebody in there you know is going to get the rebound--alleviating all the other people of having to shade back towards the basket--to get a faster tempo going.  We saw it in spades tonight.  I've heard that we're not fast enough to run and  that Nate doesn't like to run.  Neither one of those is really accurate.  When it's possible for us to run we are going to be able, and happy, to do it.  This was a decent litmus test of what can happen if we dominate the glass.

Obviously this is not going to happen on a regular basis this season.  In fact it may not happen again.  The Clippers were a complete doughnut tonight...sweet on the outside, massive hole in the middle.  But figure this:  Joel Przybilla + whatever power forward we make due with at center right now are to doughnut what Greg Oden + Joel Przybilla are to...?  Maybe not the best big-man teams in the league, but many of them.  Greg Oden is going to end up being as good of a rebounder as Joel is.  (He'll also be every bit the off-ball intimidator Joel is.  He'll be better than Joel at straight-up, position-holding defense against big men and he'll be better offensively too.)  The point is, we're going to run more once Oden gets acclimated and that's going to boost our spirits and eventually our production.

Besides the dominant rebounding theme, a couple other things stood out:

--Both teams shot horribly.

--Both teams shot worse than horribly from three-point range.

--Our bench was just gruesome.

--The agony of the bench performance was matched only by the agony of watching all of our point guards get used defensively yet again.  There were moments when Blake, Jack, and Sergio made mistakes that brought groans and grimaces.  All of them at one time or another looked like they intentionally got behind their man...like on purpose. Jaw-dropping.

--We also got stuck on offense more than I'm used to seeing.  Were the Clips really playing that well or were we just trotting out the "B-" game?  I kind of think the latter.

--How much do the Clippers miss Elton Brand and Chris Kaman?  NOTHING would have been the same had they been playing.

Individual Notes:

--Joel has to come first with his 25 rebounds and 14 points on 70% shooting.  They just had nobody to stop him.  Bravo to everyone else for doing a good job of recognizing this.  I think we were all rooting for him to set the rebounding record.  Too bad the game wasn't three minutes longer.  He really carried us through an otherwise mediocre game.

--Lamarcus was an ancillary beneficiary of the gooey Clipper middle.  When you don't bother his post moves he looks superb.  He riddled L.A. for 21 points and 10 rebounds plus he had a couple of nifty-looking passes.  Again he was one of the fast break leaders.  File that away for next year.

--Brandon did his usual good job.  He missed some jumpers but made up for it by going 8-8 from the line.  As I've said several times you hardly notice 23 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals from him anymore.  I think that means he's kind of good.

--Martell had a NICE dunk early on.  I couldn't believe it wasn't the dunk of the game.  He only ended up 3-8 for 8 points with 1 board and 1 assist though.  I'd love more sustained aggression.  Or at least make a nuisance of yourself.

--Steve Blake had 7 assists and was one of our key guys on the break.  He shot 1-8 though.  Ouch.

--Speaking of "ouch", check out these combined stats for FIVE players off the bench:

5-26 shooting (19.2%)
1-8 three-point shooting (12.5%)
3 free throw attempts (17% of our total)
13 rebounds (25% of our total)
3 assists
2 steals
0 blocks
10 fouls (56% of our total)
14 points (17% of our total).

Now granted they were playing so poorly that Nate could only give them 27% of the total minutes, but only their rebounding comes close to matching that production.  And also keep in mind that other than rebounding this wasn't exactly a high-production game.  A disproportionately small percentage of "only a little" is VERY little.  Jarrett 1-8 shooting, Travis 1-9 shooting...ugh.

One-Sentence Game Summary:

Your lack of a killer instinct carries over to the team? Are you naive enough to believe that there's no correlation here? Think about Men in Black 2.  Sheesh. Nice hardy boyd reference, was it the one about the Chinese Junker?

by Dheepan on Mar 22, 2008 11:19 PM PDT reply actions

LOL!
But seriously, if by "killer instinct" you mean not trashing them, remember one crucial thing:  they're YOUNG.  Young guys always get a grace period in my book.  And yes, that can last a season or two.  I was pretty hard on the bench tonight, demonstrably so.  But if you want to hear constant ragging on guys or complaining about things they probably can't do consistently yet you're going to have to tune in elsewhere.  Now when these guys starting getting into their 5th, 6th, or whatever seasons the grace goes away.  I am a little frustrated with how lost Travis and Martell have been looking lately.  If they can't finish stronger than this it may affect my overall review of their season.  But the basic story is I never trusted either wholly to begin with, so I'm not surprised they're going up and down.  Now if Brandon and Lamarcus started fluctuating wildly you'd hear a little more squawking.

Oh,
and if and when we pick up some veteran free agents my patience with them will be very short.  We will be picking them up for one reason:  to perform consistently, night in and night out.  I don't know if that will be a the star level, just as a starter, or as a sub, but if we picked you up specifically to do any of those things and you can't do them with regularity then I have little time for you!

For similar reasons you would have found me far more critical of the 2002-03 squad than you do of the 2007-08 squad, even though the 02-03 squad was clearly a better team.

Dave
you made a nice point of Blazers running, and I saw it too. I realy enjoy when Blazers push up the ball. What I noticed is that Joel sets nice picks, and rolls to the basket, but he does not get those touches. I bet he would have 20 points tonight, if the Blazers would see him. A few times Joel would set a screen, and roll to the basket(you could see him good because there was nobody on the Clipps as big as him), but the player with the ball would just pass to a guy on the 3 point line, not inside.

by RipCity on Mar 22, 2008 11:32 PM PDT reply actions

Part of why they do not seem to see him
is that they do not trust him.  Now granted, the time Joel is best at catching and finishing by far is the exact kind of play you've described.  But still...he's not exactly guaranteed to catch it, let alone score.

One thing I often do is imagine Oden making those same catches off of cuts, plus the catches deep in the post that Joel can't handle.  Almost every one of those is going to be a dunk.  This offense--rather the way other teams defend this offense right now--leaves a lot of room for center play.

I guess thats it
but today could of been different, because he is so big, and there was nobody that could guard him

Yah
Today was Joel's day.  The Clips couldn't touch him.

Well said.
I do have to quibble with your other comments about Oden, however.  You wrote, "Greg Oden is going to end up being as good of a rebounder as Joel is.  (He'll also be every bit the off-ball intimidator Joel is...)".

Now I'm one of the biggest Joel fans around.  I think what he does with limited natural ability is fantastic.  He's been the heart & soul of this team all season; they'd have been lost without him.  But considering Greg Oden's remarkable physical gifts (speed, quickness, strength, leaping ability, sure hands, etc.), I'll be shocked if he doesn't far surpass Joel as both a rebounder and an off-ball intimidator.

In the case of the latter, I expect GO to leave Joel in the dust from Day 1.  Will he struggle with foul trouble at first?  Sure: all rookie shotblockers do.  But the intimidation factor will be off the charts.  I don't recall the stat exactly, but the differential between opposing teams' shooting percentages when Oden was playing for Ohio State vs when he was on the bench was ridiculous.  Guys tend to remember when a guy who appears completely out of the play comes from nowhere to smash their shot into the 7th row. That's a shock to the system that lingers for awhile.

The thing about Joel
Even if he only plays 15 minutes a game next season, I still think he's worth his salary when you factor the entire package into it.  Raef is eventually going to be out of the picture, either via trade for his expiring contract or by letting him walk when it's up.  At that point, we've upgraded both our starting and back-up center positions x 100000000000000000.  If G.O. has foul problems, aren't we entirely comfortable playing Joel 20-25 minutes?  Joel is an adequate starting 5 and a VERY GOOD back-up 5.  Having your center position stacked like this is a big deal - think playoff-style basketball!

Also think about how big Joel's stepped up this season with G.O.'s unexpected absence.  He's been a major reason this team might finish above .500 in the very tough West.  He's been bigger than anyone outside of Portland could ever imagine.  Throw in his attitude, work ethic, and basketball smarts and I think $5-6 mil/yr is a bargain for this guy.

Another thing...
In practice, GO & LMA get to compete against a quality, tough-as-nails NBA center (i.e., Joel).  That's huge for their development.

Pryz caught a bullet pass!
Zipped to him from the right side of the court as Joel was breaking down the middle to the basket. It was a little behind him. Smack right into his hands sticking like tar! I could not believe what I saw.

Leaving a big smear of stickum
on the left side of the rim, as he scraped the ball off his hands.

This screwed up all jump shots for this remainder of the game. I think he did the smear thing to the other hoop too. Now you know. there you have it. the inside info on why shots don't fall and how they get stuck up there every now and then.

YAY we won!
I guess that's as close to a blow out as we're gonna get.  Oh wells.

Clipper fans are long suffering, and I really feel for them this season.  I've liked every Clipper fan I've met down here in LA, because like a Blazer fan they are devoted to their team-- and while we were tested the last few years, Clipper fans entire existence has been tested year in, year out.  And just when it looked like the franchise turned the corner, and they make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs... they follow up that run with missing the playoffs by a few games and then their roster is decimated by injuries.

If the Clippers are healthy and Brand is Brand and Livingston is serviceable and Kaman has his breakout season alongside Brand, then the West has another playoff worthy team.

This season just isn't fair to their fans, and there isn't anything they can do about it.  I hope they remember they should have a decent team next season, and should get a great draft pick.  We know how fun those are!

I've seen Thornton have some good games, he is super athletic, but he has looked off against us.  His shot looks wrong right now; obviously I don't follow him as closely as I would any of the Blazers, but he wasn't even close on his jumpers.  I know he's not a shooter per se, but I think he has developed a hitch that is hurting his accuracy.  He's a year older than Roy even, so he slipped in the draft, but he'll be a great scorer for years to come.  Perhaps a younger Maggette, though I'm sure Clipper fans are hoping for more.

Where the Clippers end up in the lottery and whom they take is almost more interesting to me than Minny or Memphis' picks.  With Thornton, Kaman, and whoever they draft they could have a nice YOUNG core to build around.

I love blow outs, but I love winning more.  I'll take 'em ugly, fat, hairy, with a weiner, any way I can.  I'm easy when it comes to victory-gettin'.

Hopefully March never ends so we don't have to lose so much in April!

Good times
The Good:  Przbilla was Player of the Game, LMA was awesome, Roy was awesome, Blake was extremely solid despite the poor shooting.

The Blah:  Martell had a flash or two but was mostly quiet (what's new?)  Travis went to the basket maybe once or twice out of 9 attempts.  There was one time the lane was completely wide open and he settled for a top of the key jumper after a great pass from Blake.  I just don't get it at all.  Why a 15-foot jumper when you should be able to drive and dunk on anybody?  JJ mostly ran around and tried to bump into people, it worked once and failed a bunch of other times.  I don't understand why he can't guard anyone either.

But mostly the key players who we are building around shined and that's what important.  Roy, LMA, Prz, and Blake looked like a well-oiled machine.

is that an olive branch?
the decision to let the Clippers off on the wager was proper and I applaude you for not rubbing it in their face.

seemed like many fans wanted to see the Trail Blazers pour it on and step on the Clippers throats. It just didnt seem necessary. Seems when the PTB get taken behind the woodshed, they remember until the next time, and then carry a passion into the game. Why create a reason for the Clippers to want to beat us, when they get healthy?

No kidding about Roy
He's that guy that you think is having an off game and then suddenly you realize that he's scored 23.  That is the mark of a truly great player.

by coolguyrob on Mar 23, 2008 12:08 PM PDT reply actions

That's actually interesting
Because it's true.

There's a flip side, which is we need to become the type of team that can't be hurt badly by Travis...or a player like Travis.  It kind of highlights the complexity of trying to develop players.

travis has been in a funk
for a while now.

ive wondered if the downturn might have something to do with a change in how many minutes he's been getting per game. even in some of his (now more rare) good games, he hasnt come close to 30 minutes, whereas for a long period he was getting 27 or so every night.

and that seemed to help him get comfortable. he might miss 3-4 shots in a row, but it never mattered, he'd come back and hit 3-4 in a row.

during the winning streak, he was getting the minutes when a) joel played less, which meant lamarcus spent a lot of time at center b) channing frye played very little.

james jones was playing, so the minutes werent coming from there.

i think travis is a 3, but if his defense as a 3 is completely hopeless, i can understand nate seeing him as a 6th man, a shooter off the bench who isnt really a 3 or a 4 -- hes just a forward who causes matchup problems and is basically unguardable (whose defense doesnt matter).

It looks like he's breathing in short, quick
gasps and can't draw air into his asthmatic lungs.
I worry about the kid and wonder if he's having episodes. It could explain why he's been "off". Hopefully I'm just being a worry wart and the team docs are controlling his asthma really well.
