Look What He's Up To Now (and Other Ref Talk)

A sad continuation of the Tim Donaghy story...  ESPN.com is reporting that his wife is seeking a restraining order, accusing her husband of hitting the children and threatening her.  Of course it's alleged at this point, but still I think we can say that it's a good reminder that not every ref walks in lily fields and sings songs from "Annie".  I believe most of these guys really do try to do their job well, just like any of us would.  Some of them, though, just do not belong anywhere near a position of authority.  There's an old maxim that two types of people get into positions of authority:  those who merit it and those who seek it.  They're not always--maybe even not usually--the same thing.

On a semi-tangent: It disturbs me sometimes how refs are able to interact with the players and coaches.  I believe officials should be able to talk to people and interact with them right up and until the point where that interaction involves anger or argument.  At that point there should be two options:  the ref calls a technical which is traceable and recordable or the ref shuts up.  Any baiting, arguing, or yelling at a player or coach should be grounds for discipline.  At that point the only way to exercise authority and/or bias in a negative way would be with the whistle.  I assume the league already traces fouls and technicals for each official and graphs them on a year-to-year basis.  Deviation from the norm should be easy to ascertain.  Also the controlling nut-jobs wouldn't be able to get the same satisfaction from the job.  I propose calling this the "Blow It or Stow It" rule.  Technically some version of this is probably already in place but I think it needs to be enforced pretty strictly.

Do you remember...
Last season when Tim Duncan apparently "taunted" Joey Crawford (at least I think it was him) and Joey t'ed him up and then tossed him out of the game?

The NBA reviewed that and he was suspended for the rest of the season + playoffs.

Even David Stern
backed down last year over the Tim Duncan laughing T incident. The union probably can cause plenty of trouble for the league and the airing of refereeing problems might confirm what most of us have seen for years - power corrupts. I like your premise about referee conduct. I wonder if the league can hire additional referees so that they can quietly suspend a referee for a week without much fallout? There does not seem to be much point in a rule with no enforcement.

tangential but kind of related
referees also are used as props as in-game gimmicks occasionally. bavetta of course is all about this. but also this week a ref was part of a polaroid picture in-game gimmick, posing with a blazers cheerleader.

to me, this can be funny and entertaining. but i wonder if it is in the best interest of the game, for the same reasons dave mentions about baiting/arguing etc.

I remember
one time Blaze the mascot was trying to get Violet Palmer to dance with him and she finally did a little dance and then stopped and looked kind of embarrassed. Of course, the crowd loved it.

In high school
I remember in a varsity basketball game I set a hard (but legal) pick on a guy and we both staggered backwards. The ref was about 5 feet away, and he started yelling at me nonstop, telling me to knock the $&!* off that %!# or he'd $@$($ T me up...I looked at him like he was crazy...our coach would never get away with language like that on the court, much less a player, and here was a ref just cussing a blue streak at me. I think he had anger management problems, for sure. It showed me that refs are certainly human.

If that would happen to me now when I'm older I'm sure I'd get in his face and probably get tossed out, so it's a good thing I wasn't that way in high school...lol.

Indeed
Refs should be like judges and not cops.  If no one is watching, cops can do anything.  They can give a warning for a clear violation, or beat the crap out of an innocent person.  Judges on the other hand, work in a room filled with people that can and will hold them accountable.  Judges have to civil, fair, balanced, and they are the final word.  The whistle should be like the gavel and end any and all discussions immediately.
