Game 68 Recap: Portland 98, Phoenix 111

Boxscore

Well, we ended up losing handily tonight.  Figuring out why isn't exactly rocket science.  From an overall perspective you're going to have a really hard time staying close in a game when you can't win a single quarter.  We made runs and had some inspired plays but overall Phoenix just outworked, out-defended, and basically outsmarted us.  Every time we made a youthful puppy-type run they calmly swatted us back into our place.  I remember mentioning a critical moment late in the first half when we had fought back within shouting distance with about 3:30 to go.  We needed to close it within 4 or so at the half, gaining another bucket or two.  Instead, despite our best attempt at a flurry, they spread the lead, forcing us to scramble just to get back within 8.  That was the harbinger of the second half.  You knew we were going to make a run.  You also knew that they, like most experienced and talented NBA teams, had seen it all before.  At no time did you get the sense that the game was out of their control.  Every time we got close there would be an unopposed breakaway or a Steve Nash killer shot...or both.  All of a sudden we were comfortably behind again.  Then we got Shaq angry late in the game (thank goodness we showed at least that much spirit) and that gave them enough energy to shut us out completely.

As far as specifics, we allowed them to shoot 55% from the field and 42% from the three-point line.  You pretty much know you're dead in the water right there.  Unless you have a 125-point game up your sleeve, that is.  You know we don't.  Our 44% shooting wasn't awful, but when you're 11 percentage points behind to a great offensive team it's going to be ugly.  We also got killed on the boards.  Part of it was missing 10 more shots than they did, but still.  Even with Shaq in there the Suns shouldn't destroy you.  They got 10 more assists than we did, which hardly required a glance at the boxscore. You could see it happening right before your eyes.  Our defense had to scramble so hard to stop anyone with the ball (and we were a wee bit indiscriminate about who we surrounded) that there was always at least one Suns player open.  They were masterful in finding that player.  At times it looked like they were toying with us.  They ended up with 6 players in double figures with Nash and Stoudemire leading the way, which is textbook Suns basketball.   And that, my friends, is pretty much all she wrote.  Even staying even in turnovers and building a nice advantage at the line couldn't save us.  It wasn't so much a lack of effort as simply getting handled by a better team.

Individual Notes

--Lamarcus Aldridge had a really nice night with 31 points and 8 boards.  The Phoenix defensive plan seems to be to take away one of our two stars.  Last time we met it was Lamarcus.  This time he called "Not it!"  They single-covered him much of the night and he made them pay.  He also made it down the court for a couple of fast-break finishes.  Nice to see.

--Brandon Roy, on the other hand, pretty much got smothered every time he put the ball on the floor.  It was darn effective too, as he shot 3-14 for 6 points.  He got his 7 assists and 7 boards but we couldn't crawl out of the hole his scoring troubles left.  It's shocking how much we rely on him already.

--Joel Przybilla had a very mediocre statistical game with 7 rebounds and not much else.  But everybody saw how he manned up against Shaq.  I hope you also saw the energy he put into this game overall.  I don't care if it did awaken the beast, I like seeing that kind of attitude and heart from Joel.

--Steve Blake had 10 points and 5 assists.  He did OK.

--Martell hit a couple of shots in a short span and I thought this might be one of those games where he uncorked but a missed dunk put-back and a foiled drive seemed to take him out of it.  He ended up taking only 3 shots in 19 minutes.  I'm guessing that's not sufficient.

--Travis Outlaw got 13 points on 5-12 shooting.  The way he started the game it seemed this would be a huge night for him.  He was hitting shots mere mortals couldn't even get off.  Alas, Super Trout's visit was brief.  After that his shot selection just looked spastic.  (Note:  The difference between great and spastic with Travis is precisely whether the shot goes in or not.)

--Channing Frye scored 12 points in 16 minutes but couldn't seem to get a groove going defensively, especially since we kept trying to handle the pick-and-roll by switching him out onto Steve Nash.  That's like putting up a "Get Out of Jail Free" card against somebody's Boardwalk hotel.  Still he hit all his shots and 6 free throws besides.

--Jarett Jack scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting with 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers.  He made one bonehead play where he let his man shoot and then get the offensive rebound but overall he showed more noticeable anticipation and energy on defense than we often see.  You can tell a bad Jarrett game because you don't notice him much except for the occasional turnover or three-point play.  This was better than that.  You noticed him a few times.

--James Jones hit 2 threes and 3 free throws for 9 points in 23 minutes.  I would have liked to see us find him open more.  With the attention Phoenix was paying to Roy and the way Aldridge was shooting I think we could have managed that.

--Sergio played 5 minutes with a couple nice passes and a couple missed shots.  I liked what I saw from him tonight as he looked like he was going to make something happen out there.  He played alive and pushed the ball up, which is exactly what he needs to do.

--Raef LaFrentz got 2 minutes and a steal.  I wanted him to lay a really good foul upside Shaq's head but it never happened.

One-Sentence Game Summary:

Eventually this is what the Blazers will do to other teams.

Nice game Blazers
This was a great win for my team b/c your guys played well. LA is looking solid and really had an impact on Amare. Fortunately for me, we've got a ton of balance and really moved the ball well tonight. 30 assists spread out. The Suns are really getting good at having other guys run the offense. I love seeing Nash as a spot up shooter with Hill and/or Diaw running the show.

I know you guys think Roy had an off night and there is some of that. But don't forget to give Raja some credit. He is an all NBA defender and Roy is a perfect matchup for him size and speed-wise. I think Bell really played him well. He stayed right up on him and when Roy would get the step he rode his ass tight and didn't give him room to operate and funneled him into our Big's.

As for James Jones - I will refer you to my assessment back when the <s>trade</s> dump happened.

As for the future, I am not looking forward to looking up at your team in two years but I am fairly sure that will be unless we trade Shaq, Nash, Diaw and half the Diamondbacks for LeBron in 2010. Ah, Amare and LeBron together...just imagine...

Hey wait
I thought we were in line for the unrealistic LeBron trade!  What's the number on your ticket?!?  Awwww...man.  Don't tell me we have to switch over to the Gilbert Arenas lane!

Seriously, you guys both manhandled and outsmarted us tonight, which is a difficult thing to do.  There was no way we were winning this game.  Not a ton of people have done that so efficiently to the Blazers this year and with so little apparent effort.  Nice showing.

Ticket # 000001 for the LeBron Train
and you can have your Gilbert and enjoy :)

Yes, I was very impressed with this win for us. Much more so then beating a small Warriors team at home (which isn't all that hard if you don't turn the ball over) or even beating the Spurs who really seem to be on their last legs...

For a team coming out of a mid-season pre-season this was the first time I have really been pleased with our all around game and am starting to have more hope for the playoffs to come.

BRoy gave Props to Bell
In the a Post-Game interview. Roy said Raja was on him tight, always. That he had his eyes on him and Brandon didn't know how Raja could tell what was going on, on the rest of the court!

Excellent post, right on with everything.
Your trade assessment is exactly right on.  It will be nice when there is no room for Jones on our team, not because he's a bad guy, or poor player, but because we have something better.

ok, I am officially questioning Nate...
Why did Steve Blake not log a minute in the fourth quarter?  He had 10 points and 5 assists with ZERO turnovers and a +- of -8.  Jack went into the fourth with 5 points 2 assists and 2 turnovers and a +- of -12. Yet JJ1 plays THE ENTIRE 4th quarter.  Will someone please explain???

I do not know
other than maybe they wanted Roy handling the ball more?  Honestly it probably wouldn't have made a difference.  Maybe Ben will have some insight in his Media Row report.

whatever the reason
it had NOTHING to do with Nate having a crush on Jarrett. Nothing, you hear me!

This one I do agree with
The only answer I can think of is they are trying to showcase Jack for other teams.  I don't know how you showcase him when he's hanging his head all game though.

Sergio's D
Today was one of the rare occasions that Sergio outplayed Jack on defense.  Jack was getting burned more than Lindsay Lohan on the beach.

questioning nate #2
why did he sit travis down in the 2nd quarter when travis was hot? he was 4-5 or 4-6 and his shot looked unconscious. after sitting he never got his rhythm back and travis is a rhythm scorer who you as a team can ride.

during the 13-game streak travis got at least 27-28 min/gm. recently though his minutes have been down -- even the other day when when he got 17 he only played roughly the same amount of minutes.

also, count me in so far as wondering why steve blake doesn't get to play in the 4th quarter.

nate
I think Nate must have different criteria for substitutions that many of us cannot recognize.  There have been many situations this year where he has pulled a bench player even tho that player maybe hot.  In my opinion, if I were forced to come up with a reason as to why Nate took out Outlaw, it would have to do with team rebounding.  I'm not saying that is the reason or that I am agreeing with it, but it is the only logical reason I can come up with.

He understands the law of averages
There's only so many fadeaway 18-footers Travis has in him.

I've never seen...
Fans of a team question a coach so much where the entire team is drastically overachieving thanks partly due to great coaching.

And on that note
The Suns just played better - Roy had a horrible game. If Roy plays up to his usual self, Portland has a shot to win that game.

How many open 3s did we give them
it seemed like every other play Barbaso, Hill, or Nash was draining a three with no one within 10 feet.

it was nice to see what LMA could do on the fastbreak.

Is Jones really making that big of an impact now that he is back? i am thoroughly unimpressed with his game

Jones is overrated in Blazer-Land
He did last night about what he's going to do most nights.

I agree the Blazers perimter defense was scary bad.  Nothing new.

Clarification: That's not to say he sucks
But he's not going to hit 90% of 3's and end world hunger.

i've rarely questioned nate -- and on the whole i don't, i accept that he knows best on the macro level. i'm not going to screw up my brain by 2nd-guessing every move i can find some reason to 2nd-guess. that's not entertaining to me.

but in sticking up for travis (as sergioFTW sticks up for sergio) i in this case saw him come in, be hot, then put back on the bench.

whereas certainly we see webster, frye, j. jones and j. jack play long minutes during which whatever positive contribution they're making is really hard to see or understand.

that's all the further i'll go with that. travis has raised his scoring this year to 13.5/gm, which was all that anyone couldve hoped, and this has been under nate's close tutelage. nate has called plays for him again and again. i'm just greedy and think travis should shoot MORE... so i'm not objective (obviously). every crazy fallaway i instantly forgive, thinking "next time he'll go to the rim."

and sometimes he does.

imo
--Lamarcus Aldridge:  Pretty good game, stayed around the paint for the most part.  Got beat back on defense a few times for dunks which needs to stop, as quick as LMA is he should NEVER get beat back on defense.  8 rebounds and a few tipped balls is good.  I don't understand Nate's frustration really, LMA was solid.

--Brandon Roy:  Give Raja Bell a lot of credit, Roy just got pwned by better defense last night.

--Joel Przybilla:  Joel did as well as he could within his athletic abilities.  Joel's a stud, what else can you say.  If only he had basic offensive skills...

--Steve Blake:  Vintage Steve Blake performance.  Steady, not bad, not great.

--Martell:  I think the most discouraging thing was when he was taken out for being beaten backdoor for a Grant Hill dunk, he looked all scowly and pouty, as if he was mad at someone else.  Another 'nothing' night for Martell, I wonder how much more patience the team has.

--Travis Outlaw:  Hit a bunch of tough jumpers, then missed a bunch of tough jumpers.  What's new.  2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers in 23 quiet minutes isn't great.

--Channing Frye:  I thought Channing actually played a pretty good game.  Nothing fantastic, but effective in his role.

--Jarett Jack:  Jarrett Jack was actually pretty awful, and I have no idea why he's getting a free pass.  The momentum-changing play of the game was just after the Shaq-Joel thing when Portland desperately needed a bucket and here goes JJ with the Bull-in-the-China-Shop move down the lane with a bunch of time left on the clock.  Shaq shoved it down his throat and promptly bombed an outlet for a fast break dunk.  JJ made a bunch of mistakes last night and I'm including the time he ran over Steve Nash but miraculously got the call that left D'Antoni laughing for a full minute.  3 assists (and 2 TO) in 29 minutes - from your point guard?  And we think that's a solid game?  Meh.

--James Jones:  Jones was ok, about what I expect from him.

--Sergio:  Other than miss a couple wide open shots, Sergio played ok.

--Raef LaFrentz:  For $12 mil/year, can I get some more hard fouls?

Bottom Line  Since Roy was kept under wraps, we needed a great performance from JJ, Martell, or Travis.  We needed them to understand what was happening to Brandon and adjust to take advantage for themselves.  Didn't happen.  End of story.

JJ's 3 at the final buzzer
did anyone else here someone on the suns call him an fricking bumhole in the game audio? (except with adult language). I think it was stoudemire. my girlfriend thought it was really funny.

at any rate it helped jarrett in this recap, w/o that meaningless unguarded shot, he would have had 9 points and been 3-8.

aren't
missed open 3 pt shots from sergio the same as turnovers? why does he even take them?

Regardless. I really liked Lamarcus' game tonight. He took advantage of amare inside a couple times and was agressive. The 2 free throw attempts bother me, but he def was banging inside.

Sometimes, he seems to be dead set on shooting the ball off a post move. And that's fine, but hsi shot ends up looking like he just threw it up randomly. I think that's what Nate was talking about. If he limits the weird random shots, then he'll get even better.

Also, I don't want him runnig back on offense immediately. He should stay and get the board. He's quick enough to make the pass and run back and establish position.
