Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Mavericks

Here we go.  The last game before the All-Star break.  Can we pull one out against a semi-crippled Mavericks team or will we carry a four-game losing streak into the mini-vacation?

Record your wishful thinking, hard analysis, prognostications, in-game comments, and post-game beer-crying comments right here.

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

P.S.  The Jersey Contest Form for this game is here.

P.P.S. Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Kidd-to-Dallas trade is done. Jason Kidd and Malik Allen go to the Mavs. Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, Devean Harris, DeSagana Diop, Maurice Ager, and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010 go to the Nets. That's a heck of a lot to send over for Kidd. One wonders if any of those players will suit up tonight. If not then Dallas is going to field, like, five people.

The same article says that the Nets plan to buy out Jerry Stackhouse, making him an immediate free agent. He cannot re-sign with the Mavs unless he waits 30 days. If he's loose on the market he could be a very intriguing pick-up on a short-term contract for...I don't know...US. He'd provide instant scoring and veteran leadership off the bench. It would be the best of both worlds. You could bolster your team for a possible playoff run but take absolutely zero salary hit by signing him to the contractual minimum. I'm sure quite a few teams are thinking the same thing, but if he did fall to us I'd think about it long and hard.

Easy win
We're undefeated against these guys, right?  Obviously we own them.

We really need this win.  Last time, it was a big scoring night from Brandon that did it.  This time, I think we need other guys to really step up.

by jscot on Feb 12, 2008 11:21 PM PST reply actions

I'd love to win this one.
Not overly optimistic but its possible.  We're due for a hot shooting night.

By the way, jscot, we're 1 and 1 against them this season.

by jksnake99 on Feb 13, 2008 12:18 AM PST reply actions

Not true
Out of the first 17 games of the season, only games 4-7 exist.  The others have been expunged from the database.  They do not exist.  Do not exist.  Do not exist.

Oh, well.  Thanks for setting me straight.

Hopefully
we can go into the all-star break with a win then re-group.

by jayseyfield on Feb 13, 2008 2:50 AM PST reply actions

We're bound to win
because number one, I'm pretty sure we're going to lose, and the last three times I've been this confident the opposite thing has happened. No need to thank me in advance for tonight's victory -- just doing my part to help the team.  And number two, Dave busted out his big-game magic talisman final line, automatically swinging juju in our favor.

Trade rumors

according to ESPN (see diary on topic), a trade for J-Kidd is imminent.

If that trade were to happen today, none of the players involved would be eligible to play in tonights game--according to rumor, the players Dallas is losing are Harris, Stackhouse, Diop, Devean George, and Maurice Ager.  The players that Dallas gets back in the deal (Kidd, Malik Allen) won't be eligible until after physicals and such--in other words, not tonight.

Plus J-ho is reportedly out.

Dallas may have a hard time suiting up a reasonable team tonight--a perfect chance to steal one.

by EngineerScotty on Feb 13, 2008 12:34 PM PST reply actions

I was just about to post somethin like this
However, I doubt the deal will be official until after the game.

I agree
if they wait until the all-star break to announce it, They are legally allowed to play, but if somebody that is being traded plays and is injured they that could blow the trade. so if the trade has happened as sources have pointed out then these players are not going to play tonight and we should be able to win! so is anyone changing their answer in the jersey contest?
GO BLAZERS! GO! DON'T FIGHT WIN! Get well soon Oden! Can't wait until Oden's revenge!

by blazerbrads1 on Feb 13, 2008 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

I agree
If the trade is real, the participants likely won't play so that they don't risk an injury and blow the deal.

It'll hurt the Mavs chances at winning this game, but if they really want Kidd then they are doing it for the playoffs and this game doesn't matter as much as the big enchilada.

I think Harris and Diop are too much to give up for Kidd, but admittedly I've always felt Kidd was overrated and I really like Harris.  And when Dampier was out to start the season, Diop played better than ever (certainly better than Damp ever did) but was then put on the bench when Dampier came back.  I don't understand the draft picks and money, because losing Harris already hurts the Mavs future enough.

So does this mean the Kidd trade was held up by the Mavs not giving up enough for New Jersey until now?  If so, good job New Jersey in holding out for more.

This hurts the Mavs DEPTH (all the more important in the playoffs), shooting, interior defense, and their future.  But their triple doubles will go way up, and that's nice.  And, just like the Lakers would have had to do if they got Kidd, the Mavs will need to change their offense to get the most out of Kidd and who knows if that will work.

Maybe it puts them over the top, but I dunno.

re STACK ATTACK
I'd sign up Stackhouse if we can, Dave, as well.  He's TOUGH as nails and never loses a fight, they say.  No one could mess with us.  Plus, he'll make sure the bench always has solid scoring OR give us another option in the starting line up.

However, I'd be surprised if he came to us because he can go most anywhere and I'd think he would go to a contender.

Stack would be nice.

7 Players To Suit Up for Dallas
Josh Howard is out and will miss this game.

The leaves the mavs with only 7 players to use in this game.

No way does dallas risk this trade on anyone getting hurt (Harris, Dampier and Stackhouse are already hurt.)

Injury risk..
If you suit up few enough players, aren't you increasing the injury risk of one of your own guys?

I mean, there has got to be a correlation between how much a guy has played in a particular game (especially relative to their usual run) and injury rate, right?

by manzell on Feb 13, 2008 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

Stackhouse min?
Even thought Stackhouse may be bought out, does the mean he definitely signs for a minimum deal? If the Nets are willing to eat has cap space, why wouldn't other teams be willing to pay more than league minimum for him?

by manzell on Feb 13, 2008 3:20 PM PST reply actions

There are only a couple under the cap
and he likely would not go to Memphis or Charlotte who could only offer $2M - about the same as the Mavs if they have not used their every 2 year exception. So Mavs are likely to get Stack back but not tonight.

I've been hoping for the trade to go through immediately so Dallas would only have half a squad for tonight's game. I wouldn't guess they'd make the trade happen on a day where it would leave the roster so thin for a game but one never knows.

Interesting to see
a piece with T. Green when he hasn't been spotlighted in ages. Another sign that a Jack trade is impending? IE familiarize the fans with the new 3rd back up point who will now see the light of day? I am alone in the wilderness with this Green will be a solid contributor on our Championship team but I will continue to be a voice in favor of Green.

Oh and SergioFTW DON"T ASSUME A VOTE FOR GREEN IS A VOTE AGAINST SERGIO!!! Seriously, there are other talented point guards in the league other then Surge!

I still place Green 3rd in the rotation behind Blake and Sergio in that order. I'm excited that Jack maybe moving to a better team for his skill set and that Green and Sergio can finally get some burn!

P.S. thank god Rebbecca got rid of that nasty Farah Fawcett windswept look. She looks quite pretty with the current style.

GAME TIME
I never thought I'd think a 28-23 record would look ugly for our young kids.  Let's not fall below 5 games over .500!

Deavean George is playing tonight, and he's in the trade talks.  Jason Terry is starting.  Both according to local Dallas announcers, who say they don't know what's going on.

They'll be depleted, if we're gonna win we gotta win it's as easy as that!

They are tired and we are tired. They are energized by getting Kidd and depleted by injuries and players traded. I believe the NBA requires 8 players to suit up. If so will they sign a 10-day contract for tonight or recall a D-league player?

B Roy getting a lot of love from the Mavs TV people here in Dallas. There's a lot of respect for what the team has done as a whole this season, and a lot of talk about them being successful despite the youngest team in the league. Also they did a little diddy on LMA. Great to see Portland getting respect again.

Say it taint so!
If the Blazers win tonight, folks will say the win was tainted because Dallas had so few players.

Ever notice how some folks regard all the Blazers' wins this season as tainted?

  *  The Blazers won mostly in home games against weak teams.

  *  The Blazers won because they were lucky.

  *  The Blazers won because they got hot from outside.

  *  The Blazers won because of bad calls.

  *  The Blazers won because their opponents were missing key players.

I look forward to the day when the Blazers win without taint.

Cuban
Did a great job turning his team around.  But it took a while for Dirk to develop and the roster to be fleshed out.

Paul Allen had some bums running the organization, and they held us back big time.  But since he put the right guy in charge, I can't see how anyone could think it's been a slow turnaround.

If we don't make the playoffs, we're still the team to beat for the next ten years with a smart GM who knows how to wheel and deal AND use Allen's vast resources intelligently.  It took some bad times to get where we at, but it was a great turnaround in only a season and a half thus far.

not good
Roy looks like he doesn't trust his teammates right now.

This is one of our worst efforts of the season- Dallas is missing their 2nd, 4th and 5th best players.

What's that- there's an allstar break?

Thank god- we all need it.

I'm feeling that way, too.
It's time to watch good BB during the stretch run. Lakers are going to be fun to watch... Phoenix will be fun to watch...

Rebound Dirk...
............ Dude takes the defensive posture of a 5, then on offense he's damned near a shooting guard. He is a truly amazing player. I don't think there's any one in the league with anything even close to his skill set... LeBron is close, I guess...

Sorry lookin' slam of the game
What a pathetic garden variety dunk. Goes to show how crappy we played tonight. That's the best we did tonight in the dunk department? Pathetic. Maybe it's time to trade some of these yahoos.

It's a pity he's not a scorer.

dirk's been killing us and we don't double team him? instead our guards are being switch on him. no one else on dallas is shooting well except j.terry.

Christy: 1) being so depraved and bored that you bring a female cat to orgasm for no reason
Christy: 2) the burmese junta legalizing gang rape and crucifiction
Christy: 3) ok I have no 3
Me: I consider this girl pretty decent to talk to, even though she didn't know what the word demeanor meant.
Christy: who doesn't know what demeanor means?
Me: well apparently this girl
Christy: well dheepan, I just have to say tough cookies

I'm over it now...
Losing to Houston was taps...

This is a glorified D-league team the Blazers are fielding, plus a superstar in training. A few guys can play, but this is not a playoff team, this is a team that's gonna get punched out just about every single night. Not ready for prime time this year, plain and simple. It's a personnel thing, very clearly. But I've said this all 400 times already, so I'll shut the hell up.

Until next time...

Well at least I know it's not my new jersey
I bought an Outlaw Jersey at the last home game.  Everytime I've worn it they have lost. I decided not to wear it tonight. Thought it had bad mojo. At least I can rule that out.

by troutfan on Feb 13, 2008 7:51 PM PST reply actions

put in Greenie and McBobby
Oh wait, Greenie is already in. He's the guy who just fumbled a rebound out of bounds.

Deactivate Sergio. Send him to the D league. He can eat a lot of potato salad while he's there. They make good potato salad in Idaho. I know 'cause my aunt used to live there and she won a blue ribbon one time at the county fair. Now she lives in Albany. I think she doesn't enter her potato salad anymore, but last year she got an honorable mention for her mint jelly. She likes to serve that with lamb, but I'm a vegetarian so I had to say no thank you.

I'm upset.
If I don't see some better ball after the break, I'm going to be very disappointed.

I don't expect the type of play we saw during the streak, I just expect some decent, competitive ball.

Getting blown out to a team missing 3 of its 5 best players is not acceptable.

Wow
The ref just stumbled over the ball and accidently kicked it out of bounds. Last touched by Barbosa, but if the ref hadn't kicked it Barbosa would easily have grabbed it and retained possession. Now it's a turnover because it went out of bounds -- off the ref but Barbosa was the last player to touch it. The ref is part of the court. That is a really bad break for the Suns.

pressure free throws for Amare
Three seconds to go. Suns down by 2. And he misses the first! Makes the second. 3.5 seconds remaining. Warriors up by 1 and they have the ball. Suns gotta foul. Looks like the Warriors are gonna pull it out.

Dissing on Green cause he makes a rookie
mistake but all of our other PGs makes 10 times as many.  I've seen 2 jumpers that went in from him that looked real good.  Give him some more time.  Only a rookie but at least hes a winner and lead his team to 2 straight national title.  Do you know what it takes to go through March without losing a single game?  The team only stayed for the 2nd title because he stayed behind.  We need somebody out there to take charge and start handling business and run this team to the finals, not to the ground.
Its a marathon, not a sprint.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
