Game 34 Recap: Blazers 103, Jazz 89

Wow.  That was maybe the most amazing thing I've seen since the 2000 playoffs.  Dang.  We just took the Jazz out behind the woodshed and tanned them twice for every single thing they've ever done wrong.  Gyp Cleveland out of a contract, will you?  WHAP!  WHAP!  Take somebody else's spot on the All-Star Roster, will you?  WHAP!  WHAP!  Sit there and smile while everybody says how much you deserved to be taken in front of Martell Webster, will you?

WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP! WHAP!  WHAP!

(That's 24 if you're counting.  And Jazz fans, I know one game doesn't change that Deron Williams deserved to be taken in front of Martell, but let us have our fun.  Oh...and WHAP! WHAP! WHAP!  That's for Karl Malone's elbows to Brian Grant back in the day.)

Team Observations

Whether or not this game showed that we are going to be better overall than the Jazz this year (and it just might) I think it showed why in the long run we're going to be better than they are overall.  One of the main storylines of the game was Brandon Roy's back injury.  It held him to only 9 minutes of play before he stiffened up and had to leave, never to return.  That wasn't just one of our cogs out.  That was the whole motor.  Throughout this streak, whether it's been remarked or not, Brandon Roy has been the guy who has held us together.  This has been even truer in the last few games when we haven't been playing up to par.  We've had a couple patterns lately.  One has been a sloppy start...muddling first half...but then late in the second quarter and especially in the third Brandon takes over and drives us back on track, setting up remarkable finishes to the game.  The second has been hot start with Brandon looking all-world from the get-go, never letting us get too far down.  He's carried us on his back for multiple quarters until we could stand on our own.  Tonight he was down.  And worse, tonight was the sloppy-start pattern.  We turned the ball over like we were allergic to it.  Outside of Lamarcus we couldn't get any scoring opportunities worth speaking of.  We weren't getting toasted on defense but the edges were turning brown a little.  We needed a second-half run and the catalyst wasn't there to do it.  Most betting people would have said we were going down.  That's probably what should have happened.  What did happen?  Nate changed our offense from the Brandon/PG dribble moves and Lamarcus post-ups to double screens and motion for Martell.  And make no mistake, this was a radical change.  It's not like we haven't ever done it, but nobody's seen that offense on a consistent basis since November.  Martell taking advantage and crippling the Jazz single-handedly was the most obvious, and probably the biggest, factor in the comeback and win.  But along with that the Blazers shut off the turnover faucet until it was barely a trickle.  They kicked the rebounding into ultra-high gear.  They invited the Jazz to get into a shooting contest with us, which they did, to their detriment and eventual demise.  And the Blazers got physical.  We got knocked around like sparring partners in the first half.  The second half we started chucking, bumping, and laying people out.  We even got some easy buckets off of forced turnovers!  In short, we transformed ourselves and the game and refused to lose.  In fact we refused to win by less than double-digits.

Now we get to the claim about being better overall down the road.  As I said, we did this without Brandon Roy.  One of the common factors in all of our victories over the Jazz this year was one of their Big Three playing like something to be wiped off of your shoe.  The culprit the first couple of games was Mehmet Okur.  Tonight it was Carlos Boozer.  His 9 rebounds were 2.5 under his season average.  That's just the icing on the crapulence cake though.  The man--their main man--shot 3-16 and scored 6 points.  7 Blazers scored as much or more than he did, 2 of them off of their free throws alone.  And what happened when one of their big three didn't come through?  They lost.  What happens when one of our big guys can't play?  We find a way to win anyway.  Utah ain't getting any more talent either.  We have at least one more main guy coming.  Whatever happens in the short term (and it wouldn't be fair to omit mentioning that they've been better than we have for a number of years now and it hasn't even been close) in the long run we have a much wider base from which to operate and probably will need far fewer things to go right in order to be successful.  The best teams are always those who need the fewest good bounces in order to win.  I think we're showing night by night that not too long from now that's going to be us in spades.

Going into stats for this game hardly seems fair...other than to point out that we really struggled in the first half in most areas.  We had such an amazingly dominant second half that we ended up with 12 more rebounds, 10 more free throw attempts, fewer turnovers, a tie in points off turnovers, 50.7% shooting, 54.5% three-point shooting...heck, we ran the table in every statistical category.

Individual Observations

--You have to start with Martell Webster's amazing, phenomenal, stunning, transcendent third quarter.  After a mediocre start the Web Slinger started hitting everything in sight.  Threes, twos, free throws, off screens, off the dribble...it was All You Can Eat Night and he had two forks and a tapeworm.  He also hustled back on defense and rebounded well once his engine started.  He even passed a little!  He was the inspiration tonight...the rallying point.  Without that performance we might have had the desire, but maybe not as much belief.  And the ENTIRE BENCH was up on their feet applauding, jumping up and down, and shaking their heads in disbelief.  In one particularly memorable shot Sergio Rodriguez, then on the bench, saw Martell hit a three and looked as if he had seen somebody in the streets of Pamplona turn around, throw a right jab at a bull, and drop it.  It was the perfect mixture of "Santa Maria!" and "How did you DO that?" and "I am a little bit scared of you!"  Worthy of note:  Martell's overall stat line is not that jaw-dropping.  He hit 8-15, he did get 7-7 free throws (somewhat unusual for him to get that many attempts), 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.  I'm not saying he could score 24 in a quarter every night but he should probably be getting more than he is.  I don't see why he couldn't shoot 6-9 out of 15 every night.

--Lamarcus, as he often does, kept us in the game in the early going when nobody else could.  He drew 12 foul shots which is excellent.  He scored 20 and got 8 rebounds.  Those are significant in that 7 of them were in the first half when we needed them badly.  His second-half rebounds were absorbed by teammates.  He also had 4 blocks, mostly off of good help defense.  This was also sorely needed as Deron Williams played most of the game like he was Bobby Brady and wanted to make us his personal slave.

--Martell may have owned the third quarter but the fourth belonged to a couple of other heroes.  The first was a familiar sight:  Super Trout was back.  It's like he saw Martell hitting shots and said, "Oh yeah...we can do that, right?"  Nearly every shot from Travis involves a little bit of cheek clenching for anyone who is watching him but tonight he was dead on.  I don't even need to describe it to you if you've seen any decent fourth quarters from him in the last month.  He also got 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

--The second hero was less likely...one Sergio Rodriguez.  You may recall a few times in the last couple of weeks I have mentioned that his play has improved somewhat, that he is fitting better into the team concept even in short minutes, and that as soon as a hole opened up he was going to be the first one to get his minutes increased.  Brandon's tailbone opened up a spot for him.  He came through admirably too.  First of all he hit some shots and drew some fouls, to the tune of 12 points total.  Scoring is going to be critical to him...not volume shooting like Roy but being a threat.  Right now when he drives the opposition mostly feels free to single-cover him because they know he's not likely to shoot or attempt a layup.  That means the four people he's passing to each have a man on them, making his job harder.  He needs guys to collapse on him after he has a half step on his initial man to be deadly.  That means scoring points.  He wasn't ultra-aggressive but he did look as if he had seen that circular orange metal ring before.  He also had a couple of fantastic steals leading to breaks.  That was incredibly nice to see.  If he can make that a regular facet of his game he's going to be in like Flynn.  (I don't know how much playing time Flynn actually gets, but it'll be more than Sergio gets now.)   Sergio didn't get burned on defense either...a trait he's been exhibiting more lately.  The 3 turnovers in 21 minutes isn't going to float anyone's boat but these were correctable (again, more scoring respect frees the court) rather than ridiculous.  No harm there.  This was one of Sergio's best games as a Blazer.

--Joel Przybilla grabbed 8 rebounds in 23 minutes and was like a tourniquet on the rebounding problem in the first half.  He picked up four fouls but there wasn't as much reason to play him once we started gang rebounding in the second half anyway.  This was another game where the defensive choices--Boozer and Okur--weren't apt.

--Jarrett Jack played a decent, not a great, game.  He made a couple of nice passes and got a couple of steals but he didn't score when we needed it badly and his defense was so-so.  It wasn't a bad effort, just not his best.

--I don't care about Channing Frye's 1-4 shooting.  I like his 7 boards in 14 minutes.  This guy is turning out to be pretty darn good for us.  And there was some nice defense in there too.  He's better on the perimeter than Joel is able to be.

--James Jones did what he needed to do.  No complaints.  It was more Martell's night.  I'm not sure Jones could explode for 24 in a quarter but I haven't seen Martell hit night in and night out like clockwork either.

One Sentence Game Summary

If you didn't love this game you don't have a pulse.

Wish
Wish you'd have given Nate and coaching staff a bit more of credit. He knew when to sub and who to go to at exactly the right time in the second half.

Don't forget Nate
He change the style of play completely to better use the players he has.

He's gots smarts.

The brian grant situation with malone's elbow is the reason I can never like the Jazz... that and they ruined our freaking 13 game winning streak.

So.... WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP WHAP AND WWWWHHHHHAAAAAAPPPPP!!!!

Hopefully we do that to EVERY team that ruins our winning streaks.  Now... we're only at three right now, and as we all know, it's not a winning streak until we hit six.  Thanks ESPN for educating us on this.

I should have been at the game in Utah and done my part cheering.  I'm convinced we wouldn't have lost!!!  Instead I was diving off a balcony onto a moon bounce.  It was a good new years eve.

You want details?

What happens in the moon bounce, stays in the moon bounce... except people who bounce too high OUT of the moon bounce.

Well said
Thoroughly enjoyable. Somehow, even though I am an eternal optimist, I have gone from wondering in the 1st quarter how we will fight back to wondering who will dominate in the 4th quarter. Of course Martell jumped a quarter but even so....

U.N.B.E.L.I.E.V.A.B.L.E. G.A.M.E
but its ok Dave, you can say it.  Jack pretty much sucked tonight.  The boxscore doesnt tell the story.  The "white unit" originally came in when Sergio subbed in for Roy, nate decided to use Jack at point guard. The next 3 or 4 minutes was the ugliest I have seen the blazers play in 17 games.  finally, Nate made the call to give Sergio the ball, and sergio immediately responded with a jumpshot, an assist to outlaw, and a pass to Jones that put him on the line.

The rest of the game speaks for itself, Sergio played very nicely in the 2nd half.  It is also fair to note that Sergio had 3 turnovers, 1 in the first half(a legit sergio mistake), the 2nd was when a jazz player grabbed him as he was making a pass(game already decided), and the 3rd was a young mistake of forcing the ball to LMA with 1 minute left in the game.  My point: to of Sergio's turnovers were when the game was decided, Sergio took care of the ball all 4th quarter, nicely done young fella!!!

ps   Sergio took over the point with 1:53 left in the 3rd quarter,  we were up 9.  With him at point, we extended our lead to as much as 20 and won the game by 14.

pss  Webster was the savior, I figured that much was obvious and didnt feel like writing about it.  But he deserves a:

thanks for saving me the effort
of writing almost the exact same post. agreed on all points. i hate being the only one pointing out when Jack is sucking and tanking the team, which he certainly did in the 1st half. for every Jack clutch performance this year, there has been 4 blah performances that everyone seems to forget about.

by sergioFTW on Jan 6, 2008 8:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

sergioFTW
i totally agree. the turnovers are what get to me, and some of these look like the result of bad court vision and others seem to arise from selfishness, i.e., jarrett won't give up the ball on the break.

the fact that he leads the team in turnovers.....and has such a lousy turnover to assist ratio....i don't know.

in trying to read nate's mind, i guess that maybe he plays jack in the 4th quarter of close games because jack is a hothead, and somehow emotionally he helps the 5 on the floor. i don't know. he's a good FT shooter, i'll give him that.

it must be something like that, a chemistry thing nate sees.

i think sergio's time will come.

Brandon Roy missing most of the game would mean we lose. But YET AGAIN the team compensates by having someone step up. Incredible. There's something larger happening here.

karl malone's ghost
The way we lost to Utah on New Year's Eve, I just knew we would be fired up to take this one.  Folks have mentioned Karl Malone's elbows a couple of times, which is funny because going into this game I mentally likened it to Game 6, 5/27/99, when we were hungry after Malone took first blood in Game 5 against B.Grant.  I was at that Game 6, and knew we would win.  I had the band-aid over my eyebrow.  Now I'm 1000 miles away in SE Montana, but I knew we had this one, too.

And what happened?  Utah's star PF shot 3-16.  As it was in 1999, it is now in 2007.  Wonderful then, better now.

Hearing a couple of comments... the blazers took that loss rather personally.

I love smashing the jazz and I think they may be my new team I love to hate.

Ironic considering I live here now.   What does that say about my opinion of SLC and their basketball team?

Nate/Martell
Nate's adjustment in this game is the reason he should be winning coach of the year (or at least of the first half of the season).  Yes, I was one of the people riding on the "maybe Nate's not right for us" bandwagon.

As great as everyone played in the fourth quarter, their points wouldn't have come without Martell's performance in the third.  Utah's defense was a rock, holding us to under 40 in the first half, and looked to stay steady to begin the second.  However, it was Martell who demoralized that whole team and threw the flurry of punches.  Guys like Sergio and Travis just pounced on the dazed Jazz.  (Which isn't a knock on them - one of the hallmarks of our resurgence has been our ability to pounce on the weak.)

Dave, in the Team Observation...
You made the statement "One of the main storylines of the game was Brandon Roy's back injury.  It held him to only 9 minutes of play before he stiffened up and had to leave, never to return.  That wasn't just one of our cogs out.  That was the whole motor.

True, but fortunately we had a very special second motor - Martell - and he was like having a Keith Black Hemi with a 6-71 Blower mounted on it. It might only last for a few passes but what amazing passes.

Holy craparoni what a fun game
True, everytime we win I think it's a fun game.  But this was an ESPECIALLY fun game...

I'm a big Martell booster, so I like it when he comes alive.  I'm also kinda a big Blazer fan, so I love watching us win as well.  Put the two together, and I'll take the game and cuddle with it on my porch-swing.

The game almost feels like a blur... we were down, close game though, playing kinda blah.  Then, BOOM.  The Martellathon raised record amounts of cash for those suffering from lesspointsitis.  Then it was the 4th quarter, Boozer had like 6 points, Martell set a new personal high, Sergio was Sergio, and we were up 20.  When did this happen?

And to OUR/MY Blazers?

Personally, this stretch is up there with our deep runs into the playoffs... perhaps because I know to enjoy it more, because of how bad we were recently.  But moreso it's just a different team, a LOT of fun to watch and root for.  In a few more years this will likely be the best Blazer team ever.

I can't remember enjoying these games more since I was a kid in the early 90's, and that doesn't count cause I was a dumb kid.  And it'll only get better.

As always, great recap Dave.

Growing up !!!
Over the last year I asked for patience with Martell, as he needed time to mature and grow into his tremendous skills. Instead many on
this site (including one rather large one no longer with us) wanted to trade Martell or package him with anybody (Jack, etc.) for a
"Star" SF. Thank goodness KP is running the ship,
and not some fans.
Obviously Martell has played well in games
this season, but has struggled in others.
Still we have seen tremendous growth in his moving
without the ball, rebounding, defense and swinging
the ball. How many times over his first two
years did we see him hustle off a screen down to
the baseline and then up to the elbow for a nice
catch and shoot jumper. Now with his added maturity, hard work and the trust of his teammates (tutoring from James) has raised his confidence to the point where missing a couple
of shots isn't a problem. We've all seen great
shooters over the years, but Martell could be
one of the best, especially with GO commanding
the double next year and ...

Nice recap, Dave.
I have only one quibble this time: you didn't capitalize your "WOW!"  That's not only appropriate for the win and for Martell's shooting, but for the fact that the Blazers BULLIED THE BULLIES!  How sweet was that?  After the game, Martell said the Jazz have been bullying the Blazers for his whole career and he was determined to put an end to that.  Way to go!

I've been saying that the Blazers need to add a bruiser-off-the-bench to deal with the Boozer/Harpring/Millsaps of the league.  I still think that'd be nice.  But these Baby Blazers have something even more important than beef; they have heart.

Not to mention a whole lot of talent.  As Roy has said, it's hard to prepare to play a team that has so many weapons.  Tonight, the Jazz came out with a carefully crafted game plan designed to shut down Roy, Aldridge, and the penetration & dish of Jack & Sergio.  Then the Blazers hit them with something they'd never seen before: Martell coming off of series of screens ala Rip Hamilton.  That more than anything would seem to be the story of the Blazers' continuing winning streak (16 of 17 now): they simply have more options than the teams they face.  Just wait'll they add Oden in the low post!

About Webster I wonder
It seems like Martell has always gotten his shots as a spot up guy but what if he's a lot better coming off screens like he was last night?  Sometimes when you are working so hard to get open, once you get the ball you don't think, you just shoot.  Whereas when you spot up, you get a second or two to think.

I just wonder if we'll start seeing more Reggie Miller-type plays run for Martell.  Couldn't hurt, he needs something to get him going, and another wrinkle in the offense can never be a bad thing.

Even besides Martell, the rest of the team, each player had a 'big play' and a hand in the win.  It's so cool to watch.

Thanks Dave
That was a fun and exciting game.  I have reached a point with this team where I do not lose confidence in them when they get behind.  I honestly believe that they will be competitive until the end. I cannot wait for them to go against the elite teams not that the team has that confidence as well.

I turned to my cat in the 3rd quarter
and said, "we're seeing some Terry Porter here."  I had no idea that it was Porter's record that Martell was closing in on; there was just something about the intensity of his play that brought back great memories of TP.

I loved the way he was running.  He was constantly on the move and seemed to always be in the right place.  Who was feeding him?  Those guys deserve credit too for always finding him at the precise right moment.  That one cross-court dash under the basket culminating in an incredible catch-and-shoot will stick with me for a long time.  That is really fan-friendly bball!

Wow just watched an archive of the game
Martell was amazing without the ball in the third he  was like Reggie Miller out there. I think he definitely needs to see some more plays and screens ran for him.

Sergio actually scored! He played extremely well and really helped our run in the fourth. He also played some good defense.

LMA was really great in the first half, he was attacking the rim a lot more than usual. I think I only saw one of his usual 20 foot jumpers.

Travis might be the best 1 on 1 player we have on this team. He is nearly ungaurdable with his dribbling fade away shots, and it really demoralizes teams I think.

Carlos Boozer got torched by Travis & LMA. Not only did Boozer not play that well but he sucking like like a blackhole against the Blazers who played power forward.

We were a lot more aggressive on the glass this game, guys like JJ33 and Trout didn't get pushed around by the beefy Jazz frontline.

We didn't foul softly like in Utah which was nice to see.

All in all a tremendous performance for the Blazers without B.Roy

Travis dribble
I am really noticing an Outlaw tic that makes me nervous. After catching the pass, he always seems to take one or two dribbles into a WORSE offensive position before shooting. Lately, he can elevate so high over his defender it doesn't matter, but shouldn't he be looking for daylight, rather than traffic?
