Linking to Your Blog 101

It has been brought to my attention that we need some guidelines as far as promoting other blogs on Blazersedge.  I'll put this here and then link it in the sidebar so people can refer to it.

Generally I am very encouraging of links to outside sources.  Because of time constraints I don't get to scour the 'net as much as I'd like which means I don't post as many links as are needed.  Nobody should ever refrain from posting interesting links to other material that they've found.

I am also tolerant when people want to link to their own stuff.  Everybody needs a boost up now and again.  However I do ask that you observe the following guidelines:

  1.  It's best to be an active member of this community before posting links to your own stuff elsewhere.  Cold-calling is not strictly prohibited but it's certainly not as likely to be received as well as it will be if we know you and your stuff already by what you've contributed here.
  2.  Promote only your best stuff and no more than once a week or so at most.  If people like you they'll catch on after one or two visits.  Continually posting links to your own stuff is more annoying than helpful.
  3.  Realize that comment threads are supposed to be on-topic.  Please don't post non-sequitur links in the middle of somebody else's conversation.
  4.  That goes for other people's diaries too.  It is permissible to start a diary linking to your own stuff and this is one of the better ways to do it.  However realize that only a limited number of diaries can appear on the page at once.  Every diary you post knocks somebody else's off the page.  Observe the "no more than once a week" rule.
  5.  You must be scrupulously honest about who you are and what you are doing.  Promoting your own blog by pretending you're not related to it is dishonest and patronizing.  Treat this community and its readers with respect if you want to receive some yourself.
If the diaries and comments start overflowing with self-promotion for other sites we may have to revise these rules and simply forbid self-linking.  I'd like not to do that, so please observe these guidelines.

Hope that helps everyone.

It's annoying when people promote their blog
but pretend they're not. Check out my thoughts on that and a variety of other topics at blazerblogspot.net.

Word to the Mother
I have had a blog since August of 2004 but it is hardly worth mentioning here.  It's mostly really dumb stuff about my life, my dreams, and my dog humping my wife's pillow.  It's like all the stuff I say here but even dumber and not related to basketball.  My friends don't even read it.  I spend way more time on Blazers Edge than I do on my blog.

Maybe you should make a rule that they have to have 100 hits a day before they can post a link.  I am lucky to get 30 hits a day and I've had three posts mentioning Oden.

I think I may be guilty of this.
3. Realize that comment threads are supposed to be on-topic.  Please don't post non-sequitur links in the middle of somebody else's conversation.

I usually do this while attempting to be a smart-aleck. I realize the not everyone knows what Robert's Rules of Order are, nor the colors of Gamboge and Heliotrope. Sure people could look them up on their own, but are more likely to just say, "Huh?" Of course, even linking to them may evoke that same response, but at least they know that I know what I'm talking about.

However, to call these links gratuitous is an understatement of the greatest magnitude. Is this what you are referring to Dave? If so, I apologize and will stop.

On a related note,

...Every diary you post knocks somebody else's off the page.
I was about to complain about the number of diaries, saying I would rather have 2 diaries with 30 comments each than 20 diaries with 3 comments each. However, many of these diaries are getting a lot of comments, so I don't know what to complain about anymore. Maybe a little more effort on the part of the people here to see if their comment does fit in one of the other diaries before starting a new one, but it actually hasn't been that bad. Except for the recent Jack diaries and the booing diaries, I haven't noticed that much overlap.
I'm not stubborn, just obstinate

Actually
I enjoy the semi-hilarious non-sequiter comments.  I'm strictly talking about things that pertain to posting your own website here.  In other words don't say, "Hey...I agree with you Shecky!  You should also read my blog here."

I'm with you on the diaries
My boy band diary got 34 comments and my serious one about teams playing hard against the Blazers only got 15.  The only thing I can take from that is stick with your strengths.

question for Dave
Dave--

Does the "no more than once a week" rule apply to regular diaries, or just to the kind that link to a blog?

No No No!
Not diaries!  Those are your playground...your blog.  Do whatever you wish, although I think T Darkstar's point of making sure your diary isn't duplicating someone else's is dead on.

I'm just talking about diaries made to promote your own blog elsewhere with the "once a week" thing.

The more you know....
Thanks for your insights, Dave.  I'm sure that there are many folks out there, myself included, who aren't hip to blogging etiquette.

Hilarious first post on this thread.

Do you have a comment policy or rule of thumb?  I know I've seen stuff before and would appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
