Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Media Row Report

Ben Golliver checks in with the view from media row.

The First Loss

It was bound to happen sometime.  Since we started this magical trip on Press Row more than a month ago (December 17th to be exact), we had not witnessed a loss - until tonight.

Everything is different during a loss.

Travis doesn't hit his free throws.  Brandon makes a foul that leads to an and-one.  James Jones isn't left wide open by clueless defenses time and again.  Lamarcus makes a tough decision, takes a tough shot, misses too many times down the stretch.  The celebrity guest - this time the esteemed Ahmad Rashad (note: he doesn't travel with Summer Sanders in tow)--wasn't on his feet during the game's crucial moments, he was on his blackberry.

Everything is different after a loss.

No chalupas.  No cheering.  Fewer signs.  Thousands of fans left early.  How can you leave early on this team?  Did you not witness any of the games on the road trip?  4 point plays; big time overtime 3 pointers; you realize we still have Travis Outlaw on the roster, right?  It was kind of embarrassing.  I realize it's the Friday night crowd but this team deserves better.  10 point deficit or 50 point deficit, you don't leave early on a team that gave you 13 straight wins and played hard tonight, despite everything, all the way to the final whistle.

Everything is different postgame.

Nate isn't smiling.  He's pretty angry about the rebounding disparity.  He walks out of the room earlier than usual, shoulders lowered, saying a very polite, very soft "excuse me" as he retires for the evening.  Brandon isn't facing the media.  Brandon isn't smiling.  He's dressing with his back to 8 cameras, wishing they'd go away.  He gives it a good effort, mumbling some responses, but the loss hurts.  Martell looks mad.  There's no singing, no dancing.  It's something of a ghost town.  Where is everyone?

Everything was different tonight.  Here's hoping reality resumes Sunday night.

Postgame Quotes:

Nate on the fatigue factor: "Everyone has played 40, 41, 42 games.  We're the same as everybody else. We play a lot of games. This is something [where] we've gotta grow, we've gotta learn. We've gotta take care of our bodies, we've gotta mentally find out how to get ... ready for Sunday."

Nate on the warning signs that fatigue might be creeping up on us: "We only had 14 assists.  We're taking a lot of jump shots, the same as last game.  We're missing free throws.  [So maybe] we don't have our legs, that could be part of it. We just don't have a lot of movement, we're not reacting, we're not as strong in the second half as we've been."

Nate on Yao: "Yao didn't even play! I thought we did a nice job of trying to disrupt their offense and not allow him to get off."

Nate on Lamarcus: "He's in between, when to attack and when to shoot his jump shot. You can see him almost out there kind of thinking about should I take him or should I raise up?"

Nate on the rebounding disparity:  "It was huge. We're not getting to boards. We knew they are a good rebounding team. It wasn't so much Yao, tonight [it was] there other guys, Scola and their smalls were pounding us and beating us. 16 offensive and 20 second chance points... that is.... tough to overcome."

Brandon on tonight's result: "Houston, they play a slow down game [and] we wanted to play faster, we got Yao out of the game but their [bench] guys came in and they stepped up. They played together as a team tonight, we gotta give them credit, they did a good job of crashing the boards, they took us out of a lot of things we wanted to do tonight.

Brandon on the team's defensive strategy: "We knew it was going to be a team effort. guarding Yao is not a one man job. [Our] guys did a great job of fronting him and giving him different looks. That was our game plan: to get him out of the game. But their guys came in off the bench and did a good job."

Random Game Notes:

The Blazers came out looser than I've ever seen them. Lots of smiles and playful pregame banter with Blaze the Trail Cat... Tracy McGrady didn't start but he played the most minutes of anyone on the Rockets... According to the Rockets' press guide, Shane Battier (a Duke Blue Devil of the highest order) has a dog named "Bruin"... Luis Scola or Manu Ginobili: who is the more annoying Argentinian? That's a serious toss-up... Ahmad Rashad wore a bright purple sweater, which you probably couldn't miss on television. I definitely couldn't miss it from clear across the arena.  Legends get to purple, I guess... Bonzi was royally booed by the Portland crowd; he responded by mock waving and saluting the crowd.  No love lost either direction it seems... Interestingly, Mike Barrett, Mike Rice and Bill Schonely (who was sporting a green sport coat straight out of Tiger Woods' closet) made a point of offering pre-game handshakes to Bonzi.  Bonzi eagerly reciprocated with a "dap" which the Blazers' announcers seemed amazingly well versed in giving and receiving... The scoreboard flashed "Happy Belated Birthday to Greg Oden" and they showed him on the big screen.  Martell grabbed Greg's hand and made him wave to the crowd. Greg was typically sheepish... Interesting interplay between teammates: Sergio was vehemently arguing a no-call at the end of the third quarter when Channing grabbed him by the neck and led him back to the huddle.  Nate immediately picked up the referee badgering where Sergio left off...Despite the loss and spotty play, it felt great to watch a game in person-- I think we can all agree that the road trip was way too long... Best sign of the night: "Welcome Home Blazers. We missed you."

Road Trip or Not
Our play tonight was simply unacceptable. Fatigue is no excuse for how poorly we played in the 3rd quarter.

29 points in the second half, is unacceptable.

Portland's defense did ok, but this lack of rebounding is unacceptable as well.  It is correctable and the coaches need to step up and make sure it is corrected.  Guys are out of position, or in the case of Travis Outlaw, reacting way too late to try and gain position. Honestly, if Portland could cut the 2nd chance points that they give away in half, they'd have about 3-4 more wins right now.

LaMarcus settles too much.  Half of his jumpers he could easily dribble in another step.  Make those 18 footers into 15 footers. Or drive to the basket more. Hopefully he will begin to understand how he can hurt other teams.  When he does that, we will see Portland take their game to a new level.

I'm hip, I'm slick, and all the women want my phone number!

Amen brother
This game exposed a lot of weaknesses that it would be foolish to throw that out the window in the name of fatigue or whatever excuse one came come up with.

As with after the dismal start, it's time to start addressing a whole new set of problems, actually some of which are old problems rearing their ugly head again.  LMA shooting ten million jump shots has got to be at the top of the list.  In practice make rule he can't leave the paint area, and put Mo Lucas in there to beat on him.  LMA has to be the second  do-it-all guy on this team, and right now he's purely a jump shooter who gets a rebound here and there.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 26, 2008 8:02 AM PST up reply actions

confused?
LMA was outside the painted area because he is setting high screens, the staple of our offense.  I would like to see him find a rhythm again in that regard.  Too many times the Rockets were able to double team the ball handler in the pick and role forcing guards way outside the 3-point line, they were unable to get shots for themselves or others.  And about LMA turning an 18 footer into a 15 footer thats just stupid.  Is it a higher percentage shot to catch and shoot or off the dribble? thats a rhetorical question.
Last night i was most frustrated with how long we left JJ3 in the game.  He was a ghost out there.  After the 1st quarter he stopped rebounding, they were hounding him on D and he did not find another way to contribute.

Whining
I thought we had a good first half, but in the second half, we were flat.  The whining to the referees has to stop.  Either go all the way on a bad call and get the technical or shut up.  Jones, Sergio, Channing, Pryz, all complained, rightfully or no.   If they had the fire and energy in playing basketball that they did complaining to the refs about bad or no calls, we would have not lost the second half 47-29.  End of story.

The James Jones dunk at the end
After McGrady set the ball down on the floor pretty much made him my new favorite Blazer.

by Garces on Jan 26, 2008 5:53 AM PST reply actions

It wasn't that the Blazers played badly
It was that the Blazers didn't play smart.  It's that the Blazers didn't play with any sense of urgency - to borrow a phrase from Nate.  It's the sense that the Blazers are starting to believe some of the hype. This team isn't good enough to play bad and win games, that's nonsense.

Maybe the Houston game was the throw-away game of the season, but to many more like this and the playoffs are going to disappear.

Blazer defense was good; Rocket's was better
New here and appreciate the thoughtful comments of the site's managers. Yeah this was an ugly game, but it was winnable; we just didn't change our offensive sets to respond.

Our defensive intensity was quite good, we really took Yao out of the game. But Houston's defense WAS just better - totally disrupted our half court game. Rockets were especially effective against our guards' cross court movement over the top of the key. They busted up the timing of the high post pick and rolls, and made nearly every off screen jumper off balance.

Like some said elsewhere - other teams are figuring out our offense and are coming prepared. Nate needs practice time.

Nice!
That's a good, succinct way to put it:

If our guards can't move freely our guards aren't effective.

Thoughtful response.
Which is preferrable to the whining and complaining we keep seeing here.  The Blazer's lose a game or have a poor outing and some folks can't wait to point out all their failings and weaknesses.

This team is not going to go 82 - 0.  Don't be surprised if they play .500 ball the rest of the way.  Looking at their schedule at the beginning of the month, I figured going 8-6 in January would be considered as a very good performance.  Guess what? they're 8-5 with one home game left against Cleveland.  The Cav's have won 12 of their last 14, so it's not unreasonable to think they may be favored.  Should Portland win, that's a 9-5 record for the month, which exceeds any reasonable expection.

Check February's schedule.  8-6 is also a reasonable expectation.  9-5 is possible, but so is 7-7.  We player Laker's home and away.  We should be able to take one of those.  We also play Seattle H&A on back to back nights.  While we should win both, it would not be surprising to drop one.  We play Dallas, Detroit & Houston on the road, if we get one victory there, we are doing good.  While we should beat the Knicks and even the Bulls, it's not gauranteed.  Denver and even the Kings are certainly capable of coming into Portland and getting a win.

Let's stop picking this team apart and appreciate the fact they are a good young team that's only going to get better.

Left early
We left with about 2 minutes left, and the game was decided. The main reason we left is because there were predictions of icy roads and with a 50 mile trip back to Salem we were trying to avoid that.  I think a lot of folks did the same, and for sure, it did ice up, etc. after the game.  It was a COLD night outside, as cold as our second half shooting. It was my 13 year old's first game in person - he freaked of course!!  And he loves his Frye bobblehead.

Luis Scola or Manu Ginobili
Scola is an ugly, long greasy haired guy. Manu is a clean cut model type of guy with a great personality (check out his commercials on youtube).  Easy decision. Scola, you are irritating in a big way, wash your hair and cut it! [but I will give big props to you as a good player]

by johnv59 on Jan 26, 2008 12:55 PM PST reply actions

I'd go Manu as the irritable one...
Because he flops and always slaughters us at the end of games against them. I haven't watched enough of Scola to know whether he flops, but I like players that hustle, and he's a hustling forward. Do we have a hustling forward? In the years to come, I'd offer a guess that Ginobili will school us more often than Scola too.

Number two - People leaving early. This bugs me, but it's what will always happen. Ah well. At the same time, it would mean the bandwagon fans are disgruntled, which would mean I could get some hard-to-find tickets in the near future!

James Jones for the block
