Game 38 Recap: Blazers 90, Celtics 100

OK folks, this was not our best game but this was a good game.  We gave the Celtics all they could handle for a couple of quarters, hung close until Ray Allen delivered the coup de grace at the end, and left the court with our heads held high.  I'm not sure I can understand anybody being disappointed with this game.  We could have easily gotten blown out of the water.  But we never let them take us for granted.

Boxscore

Team Observations

You could tell at the start of the game and at its end the experience gap between the Blazers and the Celtics.  We came out nervous and played tighter than normal down the stretch.  But in the middle of the game we had some fine, fine possessions.  Our ball movement was basically solid.  Our shooting was good.  Our three-point shooting was good.  We battled back and forth for the lead.  We watched guys step up.  When we were in the flow there was little difference between the ultra-young Blazers and the championship-contending Celtics.  The big differences ended up being that the Celtics stayed in the flow longer than we did and they timed it better.  We took the lead at the half and extended it early in the third but they put down the hammer and crushed us late in the third and through the fourth.

The most glaring problem for Portland was an uncharacteristic number of turnovers.  Boston harassed us into mistakes and then capitalized on our 19 turnovers to the tune of 23 points.  We only had 8 points off of their turnovers.  That's a +15 advantage and...scene!  That's a wrap.  Equally disturbing were our defensive and rebounding slips.  We didn't get outrebounded overall by much but we let a lot of offensive boards slip by including a couple off of free throws.  Missing free throw rebounds should never happen.  Our big man corps looked smaller and weaker than their Boston counterparts tonight.  They also had real trouble rotating.  Celtics drove the baseline several times and found no opposition inside.  They also whipped passes through the interior.  We had a serious lack of recognition, foot movement, and just plain hands-up energy in the interior tonight.  We did alright one-on-one but as soon as Boston moved ball or feet towards the middle we were sunk.  They also attempted 14 more free throws than we did.  Much of that was attributable to our defense.  If there was some homecourt star-power in there, well, what do you expect?

A.  They were at home.

B.  They are stars.

C.  It didn't matter anyway because everything else in that paragraph spelled our doom before any free throws were shot.

Again...when you realize the overall mediocrity of our interior defense, rebounding, transition, and ball-handing you understand what a nice effort we gave in other parts of the game to hang close.

Beyond all of this, the Celtics had Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce.  Garnett has scored 19,737 points in this league.  Allen has scored 17,534 and Pierce 16,127.  Our roster combined has scored exactly 25,202, and 10,047 of those belong to Raef LaFrentz and Darius Miles.  In other words any one of their stars has put more points on the board than our entire rotation.  Those guys know how to play and know how to win.  If you're talking just in right now terms Boston fielded the best, most accomplished three players on the court tonight.  In any other world that's a recipe for a blowout.  Apparently in Blazerland it just means the game is going to be pretty close.

Nobody better be hanging their heads about this.

Individual Observations

--I thought Brandon Roy played a fine game.  He didn't take over but he kept active.  He shot 7-16, 7-8 at the line, dished 6 assists, and had 22 points.  The Celtics really tried to shut him down once he put the ball on the floor and headed into the lane.  That was obviously their game plan.  It might have blunted a little bit of his effectiveness--he did have 4 turnovers to go along with his 6 assists--but not much.  I would imagine the Celtics came away impressed with him tonight.

--Lamarcus Aldridge started out hot but seemed to fade as the game progressed and Boston keyed on him.  He ended up an impressive 7-12 and had 16 points with 2 blocks but he only grabbed 5 defensive rebounds and committed 4 turnovers.  He did a credible job of watching Garnett for much of the game before KG just took over down the stretch.  I didn't think Lamarcus brought quite enough to get us to the next level though.  He looked like a second-year player given a daunting assignment.  That's exactly what he was, of course, but we're used to seeing a little more.

--Jarrett Jack looked like he wanted to win this game!  He shot very well, got 5 assists, drew some fouls, and ended up with 17 aggressive points.  He had the standout game for Portland in the sense of taking his play up a notch.  He looked completely non-intimidated by the situation.  I wonder if this bodes well for his possible playoff performances?

--Travis Outlaw also got 17 points on only 8 shots.  His 7 rebounds weren't bad either.  But he contributed to our defensive shortcomings and committed a robust 5 turnovers all on his lonesome.

(Side Note: You could tell who the Celtics chose to key on tonight.  Brandon four turnovers, Lamarcus 4, and Travis 5.  Warned you about that defense.)

--Joel Przybilla had 9 rebounds and toughened us up a little when he was in.  The big problem:  this was his worst offensive outing in forever...so bad, in fact, that you just could not see him playing major minutes.  He rim-checked himself on dunks and got his shot blocked.  He missed chippies and free throws.  He fumbled the ball when passed to.  It was like Old Joel made an appearance at our end of the court tonight.

--Other than a brief couple of shots off of curl screens in the third quarter Martell had a quiet night.  Perhaps he was spending so much energy on defense that he didn't have enough to get open.  He didn't do all that well defensively and he didn't get any help when he got burned, so overall you'd have to chalk this up as a tough night for young Master Webster.

--Steve Blake and James Jones were the only Blazers who played more than 20 minutes without a turnover.  Each was decent.  Neither made a crucial difference.

--Channing Frye had a poor night.  He wasn't any better defending the middle than his cohorts.  He collected 4 fouls in 12 minutes of play.  Worst of all he shot like he was swinging at a piƱata.

--Sergio and Raef really don't bear mentioning.

One Sentence Game Summary

We put up a good fight for being so discombobulated.

Blazer fans can take solace in the fact that had we won this emotionally-charged game chances are good we would have let down in Miami and ended up 1-1.  We can still get that same record.  It'll just be reversed.

P.S. Thanks everybody for the 1107 comments in the Gameday thread. That stands as a Blazersedge record for a game ending in regulation!

I have to say
for the first time I feel like the refs kind of stole the game from us down the stretch. There were some very questionable calls during some crucial moments. That said, you can't argue with 21 turnovers, absolutely dreadful. Also, one final note, I really hate Kevin Garnett after this game. I don't remember him being such an A Hole, but he really was a jerk tonight. Can't wait till we play them in our Garden, and the home crowd carries us to victory (without the prompts from the scoreboard to stand up, cheer, etc...)... Good effort guys!

I agree...
It felt like pac-10 football officiating. There was a point late in the 4th that Monty Williams had to hold back Nate from storming the court. The Celtics got the ticky-tack calls, the Blazers didn't. That is going to happen on the road and especially against one of the best teams in the league but it's still frustrating.

Another thing that is frustatinging to watch is how the Blazers seemingly abandon a player or offensive set that is working. Last night in the third quarter, Nate called a few plays for Martell. He hit 2 of 3 shots, looked to be getting hot but then the team went back to the high pick and roll, which wasn't really working. Martell didn't see the ball for the rest of the half.

Second, in the 4th quarter, right when we were making our final push, we ran some iso for Roy. No pick and roll, just mano y mano and it was working. No one Boston sent forth to guard Roy could stick with him and it created a couple good looks for Roy and an assist or two. Yet, the team went right back into the pick and roll to close the game. Boston hounded the dribbler out of the P&R all game long and it never felt like it was creating good looks, save for one beautiful Blake to Pryz dunk.

I know this team is unselfish and there are a lot of weapons in the Blazer arsenal but sometimes I feel like the team needs to do a better job of riding the hot hand.

Let's come back strong and put up another 26 point annihilation in Miami. Go Blazers!!!

No problem
Solid effort, just a few things we didn't do well enough to beat a top team on their court.

Miami has lost 11 in a row.  Its important that we make it 12 to keep us in position for 3 or 4 wins on this trip.  If we win that one, we'll still be in good shape.

by jksnake99 on Jan 16, 2008 9:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

the blazers were within 4 very late
with a few breaks they might have won. credit ray allen and garnett for hitting some clutch shots; credit the celtic defense which really was extremely tough.

still, if joel makes his dunks and FTs and the refs call one less spurious foul we might have pulled it out.

it was closer than the final score.

Garnett got one over on us
Great effort by the Blazers and no reason to hang our heads.  I just hate that KG barked at us all night, and got one over on us.  He shook no ones hand and basically intimidated our entire team-especially LaMarcus.  He made LaMarcus look like a little baby out there.

The one problem I have is that during those crucial late Q4 possessions, why were we going to LaMarcus in the post against KG?  That's their dream come true and KG will get the call and win that match-up every time!  Is it because Nate wants to continue to "Teach" LaMarcus?

The Blazers have been doing the bullying lately, which I love.  I just hate to be the ones getting bullied.  Especially by That rat %$#@^$^ KG.

Some things from the broadcast
First off, were there acctually people at the game watching, or was it just filled with autofan's like the pilot in airplane.  The crowd was eerily quiet, with every time the crowd went above a light din Mike Barret noting that the scoreboard was telling them to make noise.  New Jersey was the same way, but all they have to look forward to is mediocrity, so I can understand that, but the Celtics have the best record in the league, and the average volume in the arena was polite discourse.  It creeps me out when the loudest thing in the arena is the rim.

Secondly, the Mikes had me in stitches tonight.  From Mike Barret's repeated telling of when the scoreboard said to make noise, to Mike Rice's "Of course Garnetts arguing that.  He doesn't know any of the rules."  For some reason, they said a lot of things that were extremely blunt that made me laugh a whole lot during the game.  Also, because of this game, my friend and I are sure Mike Rice is going to attack someone by the end of the season.  He seems to be getting violent in his commentary.

For the game, I think we did pretty well.  I want to watch this game again, except with a Rose Garden full of Blazer maniacs screaming for the Blazers.  It's not a stretch for us finishing ahead with 22000 Blazermaniacs cheering on the team with how we played.

I was actually there last night
wearing my retro Blazer sweatband.  And yeah, you're right - the Gahden was surprisingly quiet all game.  I remember going to games at the Memorial Coliseum and Rose Garden back in the day (meaning, late 80s and early 90s) and almost having to wear ear plugs the whole time.  It's not nearly the same in Boston these days.  I don't exactly know why (though I have a theory that it has something to do with watching a bunch of players who didn't develop in your system and are suddenly thrown together and called a "team").

I need to watch this game rather than listen, but
Everything sounded uncharacteristic for this team. Poor team defense and lots of turnovers down the stretch. That is not the TrailBlazers I have been accustomed to.

I didnt hang my head after the Toronto loss as the Blazers did what they could and played well, but from what I heard they played awful in the 4th. I am downloading the game right now so maybe I will have a different opinion after I watch it, but I am pretty bummed out right now.

Checkout Danny Ainge

He's actually happy the Celtics didn't get Oden.

He'll regret that, the bastard....

That Danny Ainge is adorable.

Excellent recap, Dave
One thing you didn't mention: Allen scored 35 pts on 60% shooting last night.  In his previous five games, he'd averaged 10.2 points on 31% shooting.  Had Allen waited another game to find his touch, the outcome of tonight's game might have been different.

That having been said, you're not often going to beat the best team in the league in their building while making 21 turnovers.

This game made me learn
a mans character is judged on when you lose.  In the end they did the best they could.  I can't ask them to play with less class to win a game.  Thats not who they are.  Don't get me wrong, the blazers just plain lost the game.  I'm glad I just get root for the good guys win or lose.  The blazers play their usual game they can beat anybody.

Yeah Dave, great recap
I have to admit Ray Allen killed us and he showed me last night his professionalism and the class he brings to game.  He would fit well here in Portland.  Those turnovers numbers are horrible.  Very uncharacteristic of them.

by theanomaly777 on Jan 17, 2008 6:38 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

They muscled us last night
and we fell into the trap. I think we let 5 fouls go to waste on the bench....ala Raef Lafrentz. Those could have been put to use. I was happy to see JJones give a hard foul while everyone else was simply taking them.......we came out with zero energy, looking like we were on a long road trip.

by iDea on Jan 17, 2008 7:11 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

It is games like this and Toronto
that tell me our team is for real.  When you come close to pulling out two road wins against good teams when your own team is not firing on all cylinders, you know you can play with anybody and beat them.

Besides, Toronto would have been a win if the refs had correctly call Calderon's shot as a 2.

Oh - I big thanks to tominhawaii for turning me on to channelsurfing.net.  I was able to watch the first half of the game.

They kept it close, that's a good thing
But none of the Blazers really played a great game.  JJ was the closest thing to it.  I think there were a lot of things to be disappointed about honestly.

Careless turnovers/not taking care of the ball probably tops the list.  Travis had 5 TO's, Brandon 4, and LMA 4.  Not counted in those turnover stats are the number of times the ball got poked away and it took seconds off the shot clock to get it re-controlled at which point the Blazers had to hurry a shot up.  That happened a bunch of times.

Getting pushed around...again...is on there.  Seriously, where is Raef?  C'mon Nate, I get taht you want LMA to take his lumps and learn, but at least let Raef soften the other team up a little.  He has 6 fouls to give and he's the only guy on your team who will foul someone hard.  Travis and Martell in particular need to toughen up.  Freakin' deck somebody just one time to prevent a lay-up, PLEASE.

Allowing offensive rebounds...again...is on there.  Maybe it's time for a practice where all you work on is blocking out your man and grabbing a rebound.  This continues to haunt us.  13 offensive rebounds...

Poor floor spacing, movement, and shot selection is on there.  Travis again with the fade-aways.  He actually hit a few of them and finished a respectable 6 for 8 but let's be honest - some of those weren't great shot attempts - and note the 3 free throw attempts in 31 minutes of play.  Go to the basket Travis.  The offense last night for the most part was pretty stagnant for the first 20 seconds of the shot clock, then hectic for the last 4.

I think you can take away from this that the Blazers can play a sub-par game and still hang with a good team but other than chalking it up to a learning experience I don't know what else there is to say because I don't think there were a ton of positives.

We still have a good team.   They lost against the best team in the NBA on the road.  Stuff happens.  Can still get 4 wins on this roadie.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 17, 2008 7:21 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I could only listen to the game,
but the stats for Travis don't look shabby: 6-8 shooting, 2-2 from deep, 3-3 free throws, 7 boards, 3 offensive and a block.  Of course there were his 5 turnovers.

Playing at home, the Celts played hard aggresive ball on both ends of the court, Allen's shot was working and so was KG's. Their defense was what caused all those turnovers and won the game for them.  Allen thought they played a hard smart game.  Still, we were close at the end.

I don't know if I can be as hard on KG as some of you others. He wanted to win that game very badly and was doing everything he could to psych out our young Blazers and affect their mental approach to the game. And I think it worked to a degree. I don't know that I can fault him much for doing whatever it took within the rules to exploit a mental advantage. After all, he wasn't throwing elbows to the face ala Karl Malone, smashing a basketball into a face ala Shaq, or slamming into the back of a hot shooting player ala Ellis. So he gets a pass in my book.

KG been doin' dat for YEARS
Yeah, I was surprised by some of us acting shocked by KG's play.  He was always a jibber jabberer, and loves to intimidate younger players.  He played his game, and it worked.  Can't blame him for that.

WE should do what KG does, when experience and respect allows.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jan 17, 2008 10:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

True.
And let me tell you, when he's on your team, you absolutely LOVE it.  You love it because it's not aimed at showing up the opposition (though it is meant to intimidate the opposition), it's aimed at pumping up the crowd and his teammates.  I've gained a lot of respect for KG since I've been able to watch him several times a week on local TV.  The dude is a warrior.  Nobody in the league (aside from maybe Alonzo Mourning, if he still counts) does what KG does.  Nobody.

After watching it first-hand, I can confirm what everyone here is saying: KG intimidated the heck out of LA last night.  Remember, LA had a pretty nice first quarter when Perkins was on him, but when Doc made the switch, it was all downhill.

by game sink on Jan 17, 2008 11:22 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Your right about Jack
the dude is absolutely fearless... I love his grit on offense he will take it to the rim on anyone, even if its not open... could come in handy during the playoffs for sure.

by CTBlazerfan on Jan 17, 2008 7:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

The Celtics defense
We should know the reason why their pick and roll defense worked so well.  Every time they jumped out on the man with the ball, they hit him without worrying about a call going against them.  I could play 2nd-team all-defensive basketball if I could go up and hip-check any ball handler without worrying about repercussions.

Oh yeah, on the Celtics side, Ray Allen is just as great as I remembered him, and KG is like Rasheed Wallace's evil twin.  Whereas Rasheed is hilarious with his arguing, KG is just an a-hole.  Also Garnett usually makes his anger a positive, where Rasheed wilts with it a bit.

by robrun2 on Jan 17, 2008 9:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

This might sound dumb
But losing this game the way we played is better than winning that game.  Now LMA sees how far he has to go to be amongst the ELITE, Roy sees how he has to adjust and manage his team when their nerves are twittering, the team remembers this feeling of AWE that makes them play like kids, and so on.

Plus, the Blazers always find the perfect games to lose because there is a bounce back game coming up next against the miserable Heat.

Everything the Celtics did to us, we need to learn to do.  Experience, intensity, staying confident in your own game.  Some day the older Blazers will play some young whipper snapper team and they'll be in awe of us, and we'll be able to pull out a game with just our experience.  But for now, this lesson is underlined with a loss, and I'm not so sure they'd learn this as quickly with a tight win.

We didn't play very well and still almost won at the Boston Gahden (is it still the Garden?  Or some corpy-rate name), and that's a good sign.  I'm sure the type of players we got will absorb the lessons learned.

It dosen't sound dumb !
I drove to Eugene to "watch" this game due
to COINCAST's monopoly.
     OBSERVATIONS -

1. The Celts 2nd half defense on the pick and roll/pick and pop was aggressive and physical.
We got bullied !
2. Travis and the boys had some HORRIBLE turnovers. Several passes to nobody. Look,
then pass, please.
3. NBA referees: Having coached, played and
watched for 30 + years; that was HORRIBLE!!!
I normally don't complain about the officiating,
but the no call at the top of the key when
Glen Davis hip checked Roy almost to the ground
right in front of the referee, was emblematic
of the aggresive Celtics getting most of the
calls. The Blazers failing to match that aggression helped determine the outcome.
4. Giving up missed free throw rebounds and key
offensive boards in the 2nd half proved the Celts
wanted the game more.
5. When the Celtics showed the aggressive doubling of the dribbler on the high pick and
roll, the Blazers should have mixed it up
with working more double screens for Martell
and James Jones. Get the Celtic defenders moving
and exerting energy without the ability to double.
6. Too many easy drives baseline for Ray Ray and
others. Martell, Travis and others need to cut
off the baseline and force the slasher to the middle and our defense.
7. This was a tough game as you know the Celts
didn't want that three game losing streak. We
learned some valuable lessons and our guys will
be determined to make a better showing in Miami.
Unfortunatly, Miami will try to bully us as well.
They do watch tape after all. We better bring
our fight with our best game.
8. Jarrett Jack played hard. Blazermaniacs know
this guy is a winner and is willing to give up
his body to get to the rim. He will get better
when he improves his defense and cuts the TO's.

Coincast?
I understand being frustrated by not having Blazer coverage but you need be telling your provider quit using you as a bargining chip. Comcast is paying $100 million dollars to the Blazers for that contract and expecting the  other providers to actually pay them to carry the channel is what is to be expected for that kind of investment. Keep it in mind

by 92wastheyear on Jan 17, 2008 11:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

BS
Coincast is doing what they always do.....they don't want a deal until after the first year of the contract. It's their craptastic way of optimizing their profits by getting the few people who will switch services to switch before offering it to others.

Ask Sacramento fans how they feel about Coincast.

by iDea on Jan 17, 2008 12:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What's Sacto have to do with it
If that is what you think going then why does Verizon Fios also have the channel?

by 92wastheyear on Jan 17, 2008 12:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Sactown fans were screwed
by Comcast Sportsnet West. Philly was screwed by Comcast Sportsnet whatever........each time they start a new channel, they do the same thing. The Blazers had to of known what they were in for when they signed that big contract.

As far as Verizon FIOS having the channel......I don't really have an answer, but through my limited research, I've noticed that they were the only ones to carry it in another market as well (which one is escaping me). Not sure of the tie between the two.

At any rate, it's us fans that lose.......and we have every right to be upset with the situation.

by iDea on Jan 17, 2008 3:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's for sale
The rights to carry that channel are for sale as evidenced buy the fact that Verizon currently carries it....no provider is being excluded....bottom line. Right now none of the  other providers have CHOSEN to take the channel. To me it sounds like you have a gripe with your provider.

by 92wastheyear on Jan 17, 2008 3:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Huhh ?
     I don't have a provider. I cancelled DirecTV
after having League Pass with them last year.
I watched every game as Fox Sports Northwest
had the rights to the additional games.
Not only will Coincast not sign a deal with
either sattelite provider, they won't do a deal
with Charter Communications, our only cable
company. I would be happy to PAY to see the
games but they won't take my money. They prefer
to black out all of these providers until they
get their price. Any idiot can see they know
the Blazers will be great in the next year or
two with adding GO and Rudy / Big FA summer of
09. They are going to get their price or not
provide service.
Coincast is well known around the country
as monopolistic, as evidenced by the multiple
investigations by the FCC. Please go back to your
desk at the corporate office and understand the
issues at hand.
I don't particularily blame the team
management, other than they knew who they were
getting in bed with before the deal. The
horrible part for Southern Oregon is the
Blazers don't even have a radio affiliate here
in Medford and KXL dosen't come in well.
Should we just seceed from Oregon and 30 + years
of Blazermania ? Either way NO TV at all !
It's GO time !

by walkoff41 on Jan 17, 2008 8:21 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Charter is your provider!!
That is who you need to direct your concerns toward. Comcast has and will continue to offer this channel to any service provider (ie cable company) that wants it. However they will expect to be paid by that service provider....they will not give the channel for free to Charter nor should after agreeing to pay the Blazers $100 million dollars over the next 10 years. It is simple economics. Call up Charter explain to them that you and your neighbors want this channel. Go as high up the ladder as you have to (up to and including Paul Allen who also owns Charter cable)and complain.

PS. guess what.... FSNW was charging for their channel too and Charter was paying it.

PPS. I am not at the corporate office anywhere and I contend that I do understand the issues completely.

I blame the Blazers
The Comcast monoply was created by the Blazers. They could have insisted that Comcast be inclusive of all of Oregon and Southwest Washington. It is clear that Comcast has followed this script before. I had three shots at getting the game and none of the providers felt the demands are reasonable. DISH has 5 other Comcast channels from around the country but not this one and I have read that Orlando is shut out from their team's broadcasts as well this year. Comcast is competing for Metro Portland's coverage with Direct and DISH and will continue to demand more from the satellites than is reasonable. The Blazers are not dumb and must have known this is the likely result but took the money and gave the rest of Oregon the raspberry. Will it get fixed? Eventually but it will take the Blazers to fix it imo.

I can't believe
the Blazers were even intimidated. I mean yeah the Celtics are good and they have stars but they've been good for like one year.

I mean god forbid this team face the old Kobe-Shaq Lakers. They would've wet their pants.

I think this game was perfect
for the Blazers. They have won more games than expected so far but the better teams will clamp down just as Boston did when they play us. The young players can either learn (which I think they will) and adjust their own games or they will lose more than they win the 2nd half of the season.

Turnovers are no surprise as Boston has been doing this to other teams all year. We now know that we need to improve to compete. LMA will bounce back and playing against KG will help him to learn and grow. I am not disappointed in this game (nor Toronto) because until we adjust and grow we are not in the same class and do not deserve to win against the better teams. If we are intimidated against Boston think about playing Detroit in their place!
