Ask the Mikes

It looks like we could have a chance to talk with Mike Rice a little during the road trip and Mike Barrett will be alongside translating as well.  I already have some questions in mind that hopefully Coach Rice will be willing to answer but I thought I'd throw open the gates and see what you all wanted to know.  Is there something you've been burning to ask either Mike Barrett or Mike Rice?

We can't take up an obnoxious amount of their time but we'll try to get in as many of the best questions as we can.  The questions I have for Coach Rice are mostly technical-basketball in nature, so the bar will be higher to get one of those on the list.

Fire away in the comments below.  Get them in before Tuesday evening.

Mikes
How valuable is Jarrett Jack to this team on and off the court?  While the zone defense takes 5 guys working hard and together to be effective, he seems to be a key component to the effectiveness of this defense.   Would you say that he sets the tone for the communication that seems to be happening in that zone?

Zone related
What is MR's explanation for the Blazers success running the zone?  Why have opposing teams found the nut so difficult to crack?

A question to either.
* Can I submit more than 1 question?

Last year Brandon Roy openly talked about his distain for the lottery, and the idea of deliberetly losing games to increase the chances for a high pick. This year everyone expected the Blazers to be a surefire Lottery Team with a good chance for a top 3 pick, yet they are currently a top 10 team in the entire league. Do you think the team has adopted Brandon's approach to the game? Should we be dreading the potential of another Lottery pick?

Ask as many as you want
As I said I'll have to pare down all the questions to a manageable amount, but shoot as many good ideas out there as you can think of.

Difference between home/away
Considering our home vs. away record, theres a good case that we have more difficulty winning on the road (like almost every team). I am wondering if this is mostly due to them being so pumped up by the crowd at home or because of the hostile environments on the road or because of factors like the travel, change in routine, etc.

I really am curious to hear what the Mikes would think is the greatest factor leading to the road/away discrepancy.

How can the Blazers utilize Martell Webster popping out from screens for open looks (a la Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton) without disrupting the flow of Roy's pick and rolls?

Question!
How is Greg Oden doing with his rehab?

Of all the teams that might make it to the playoffs; Who would be a good match-up for the Blazers?

Who do you think might be our full-time point guard in 2 years?

Did you speak to the Raptors crew? At the start of the game they called Travis one of the X-Factors of the game, but they had a picture of Bo Outlaw, At halftime they changed it.

Hmm
  1. Can you ask them what they think of the whole Britney/child custody thing, and if she has a Randolph's chance at the All Star game of reviving her career?

  2. Do they foresee pro wrestling ever making a comeback, or are the heydays behind them?

  3. Do they miss Zach Randolph, Steve Paterson, Bob Whitsett, or John Nash?

  4. Do the players ever hug them after a big win and if yes, how do they get sweat stains out of their suit?

  5. Were they disappointed in the ending of The Sopranos?

  6. Do they ever forget which Mike they are?

  7. They know someone has to go to make room for next year, which player are they just dying for KP to get rid of?

  8. My dog discovered crunchy snacks in the cat's litter box, any advice to break him of the habit of dining there?

  9. What did they think of JK Rowling's revelation that Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is gay?

  10. Looking back, on their vast and storied careers, would they change anything?

Question
Rice: Please, God, help me. What did you say when you got kicked out by Javie? I remember that happening, but was too young to retain specifics. Plus, Wikipedia and others don't seem to know either.
Barrett: What has been your favorite game to call this season and why?
Either: Who is more likely to be traded (opinion only of course): Jack or Sergio? Are JJ's turnovers more palpable for Nate to deal with than Sergio's simply because of the rapport the two have or is it more to do with (kudos to tssbro above) his communication, something noted prominently on TrueHoop two weeks ago?
Again, either: Have either of you ever met Henry or Dave? How weird is it to have the two best sports blogs on the net be run by ardent Blazer fans?

Dave: Where do babies come from? Jk. Thanks for the opportunity to ask the Mikes there mister Dave. I may not agree with you on Rome, but Blazer fans have nothing but love in the heart. Rip City boys and girls.

P.S. Question for both: What is their favorite Schonely-related term? Sorry for the dearth of player specific questions, I just figured those more technically sound will ask those and the elocution will be sharper.

According to the Tribune...
Not a question, but according to the Portland Tribune, the ejection had to do with a goaltending call:

---
In the third quarter, the Blazers' Cliff Robinson had a shot he thought was goaltended, but it wasn't called. Robinson looked at Rice on the way upcourt, "and I made a goaltending gesture to him," Rice says. "Javie saw me do it."
Subsequently, Doucette recalls, "Mike made the choke sign. I don't think Javie liked it."
According to Rice, as Javie ran by Rice's courtside seat, the analyst was saying, "Justice is not being served."
Javie approached Rice and said, "Just do your piddly little job and leave the officiating to me."
"My piddly little job?" Rice replied. "I'm not the one who blew the call."
After another exchange, Javie motioned him to the exits with, "You're outta here."

alley oop
Why does Portland never seem to include alley oops in their offense? I get that their half court offense is predicated on pick and rolls, but they wont even throw in an alley oop on a fast break. Why is this?

by jonestr on Jan 15, 2008 12:54 AM PST reply actions

Because our PGs
follow Nate's design, which is essentially a methodical approach. I have no problem, since all my P-Town oops experiences relate to a) Sheed dunking and yelling and then b) getting one, sometimes two Ts. If that is a sacrifice as a fan I must make then so be it. Roles
Who do you feel is most uncomfortable with their role on the team?

Which Blazer has been getting the most interest from other GMs in the league?  And what are our chances of getting rid of that player.

A question for Mike Rice
I am curious...Does Mike Rice and/or Mike Barrett have a good enough rapport with the players to share their observations and offer constructive criticism?  For example, does Mike Rice ever go up to Travis Outlaw and remind him that he can get to the free throw line 6-7 times a game if he will drive all the way to the basket?
I'm hip, I'm slick, and all the women want my phone number!

by silkybrown on Jan 15, 2008 2:33 AM PST reply actions

For either
The team had to overcome some very tough, and uncommon adversity just prior to the pre-season when Greg Oden had season ending knee surgery. The team was obviously shaken, and expectations hit a low, which brought about a weird acceptance for a potentially mediocre season, yet the team has rallied to give us fans something very special.

My question relates to the organization as a whole. The teams play has created a whole new set of possibilities, but has the initial approach to the season changed? Are you still 'okay' with a lottery pick? Lastly, is the organization prepared to deal with a potential let down?

by Outlaw is Rejector on Jan 15, 2008 4:23 AM PST reply actions

Just wondering
Is there any chance we will see Roy and Sergio playing at the same time this year?  Seeings how they both play better with the ball in their hands, is there anything in their games that suggests they may be able to evolve into a workable duo in the future?

Why
is Mike Barrett's stool taller than Mike Rice's when MB is the taller person?  At least at the Memphis game (remember Dave?  I asked you then) it sure looked like it was taller.  I've forgotten to look since then...

Do they think KP is targeting a particular FA in the summer of '09?  Since this team is growing faster than expected, what are the chances that we won't NEED one? (Or at least one of the high-priced one.)

LMA said he hopes he & Roy play together their whole careers. Are there current combos that they would hate to see broken up by trades?  (In other words, are there extraordinary combos?)

Will Rudy really fit in right away?  Any ideas how to make room for him?  How about roster space for a first round pick?  Would they trade that away?

How is the NBA schedule constructed?  Human, computer, alien?  How carefully is it examined for things like playing Utah 4 times in 5 weeks, (in Feb. we play Seattle twice in two nights and LAL twice in four),  flying across the continent west to east to play a morning game,... and looking ahead to February I see us playing Chicago here on a Weds, flying to Detroit for the Fri game, coming back home for the Sat game against Indiana.  And those 3 cities are so close together... or is the schedule maker geographically impaired - I'm thinking of all the aircraft fuel consumed...

What are the chances of the Blazers having their own DLeague team?  And changes in DLeague structure so we could have signed players there without counting against roster space?

I also have questions for Tom Penn about contracts - for when you wangle an interview with him :-)

Well, I started off with the stool
which is somewhat quirky, but then I tried to be serious since they can't all be answered.

I could add one about their "dress code" - is there one and does it come from the Blazers?  Do they furnish their own wardrobes?  How about Rebecca?  Sometimes it seems like she's trying to be too sexy in her black boots - who is she dressing for?

Why do M&M get ringside seats and the radio guys often get the nosebleeds?  Does location affect the broadcasting?

What are their favorite/least favorite arenas to work in?

Are there "rules" about fraternization with the players?  Management?

Do they think any of our assistant coaches will become NBA head coaches?  Which ones have most affected Nate's coaching style?  (He has said his coaches are the ones who told him to back off.)

What Blazer players (all years) would be good coaching candidates?

In their opinion, who is the smartest current Blazer?  Not basketball smart, but IQ smart.

I've been wondering about blogs
Basketball blogs have totally changed my experience as a fan.  Has the blog explosion changed how broadcasters approach their jobs?  Do they spend much time reading blogs and forums?  What do they read?  Do they read blogs for insights? Comic relief?  Have blogs and forums changed their connection to the average fan?

For that matter, do they think the blog explosion has changed how GMs do their jobs?  Do Nate and the players read any of this stuff?

Lots of questions, but you get my drift.

On coaching young players
Rice: You've coached in the college ranks, and this group of Blazers - with a couple of exceptions - is still young enough to be playing at that level (some pundits have even likened them to a superior college team, especially as their zone has become such a success).  Do you ever feel the urge to teach these young players the lessons they may have missed by skipping college or leaving early?   What is the role of the college game in preparing players for the NBA, and how have you seen that experience (or lack of experience) play out on this roster?  Thanks!

Personally I think most nicknames
are pretty stupid.  They might be ok when used among friends (occasionally), but not with folks you don't know personally.  For me this proliferation of nicknames, which seemed to start in the entertainment industry, is another sign of the dumbing down (or laziness) of the population.

For the Blazers, I can see Trout for Outlaw as being one that's imaginative and sounds like it fits.  JJ for either Jack or Jones would be ok, if there was just one of them.  Not exactly imaginative, but at least illiterative.  After that, what?  Always referring to Rodriguez (and Fernandez when he gets here) by their first names is cool and shortening Joel's name to Pryz is ok (though I tend to think at lot of people either aren't sure how to spell any of the three or think it's just too many letters to type).

But Brandon Roy should be just that.  Brandon, or Roy or Brandon Roy.  Give him the respect of calling him by his given name.  I want everyone to know who our starting power forward is - LaMarcus Aldridge.  No wondering what LA stands for, no misspelling of his name.  I want the three syllables GREG ODEN to instill a sense of doom for the fans of every other team in the league.  I want people to hear the name Steve Blake and say "Isn't he the guy that was the starting PG for both NCAA and NBA championship teams?"

My apologies for the rant.

by timg56 on Jan 16, 2008 7:57 AM PST up reply actions

Roy's future running mate?
Here's an idea you can bounce off the Wild One.

I was thinking about the ideal guard to put alongside Roy. Brandon is a solid defender, but quick point guards will give him trouble. So, if Roy is Portland's "point guard of the future" you'd want to pair him with an undersized "shooting guard" who could stay in front of waterbugs like Parker, Nash, etc.

The good news is...the Blazers already have the more-difficult-to-find component--that's Roy. It shouldn't be too hard to draft or deal for an cat-quick guard who can spot up and shoot the lights out and is also willing to play lock-down defense to help prevent PG penetration.

Why do these 2 very capable announcers feel compelled to be apologists for poor Blazer team and individual play.  The constant "back to back game", "early starting time", "late arrival" is unnecessary and annoying. I know they like this team and the great guys on it and want them to excel every game but it would be a much better listen without the excuses.

by reffster on Jan 15, 2008 4:54 PM PST reply actions

Couldn't agree more
The excuse-making of both Mikes has really been on my nerves lately.  Perhaps they got into the habit when the team was struggling these past few seasons, but good teams don't need excuses (and rise to the occasion even when those disadvantages are obvious to everyone).  I wish they'd hold this club to a higher standard now that we're back to our winning ways.

Re: Enjoyment.
Do you enjoy watching games more when you are playing your broadcasting roles or when you (rarely) get to just sit back and watch (say on the TNT broadcast nights)? On those nights off from the broadcast booth, do you find yourself wishing you were doing the broadcast or do you relish the chance to just sit back and be a fan?
When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

"Thursday's game against the Bulls will be televised on TNT, so our TV crew will be taking a rare night off. I'll help Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey out on the radio broadcast, providing stats. I have a hard time just sitting and watching, so I usually like to have something to do in situations like this."
